Ski Bag to Fly With

So I've never taken my skis on a plane before, and am finally going to invest in a bag that I can check and not fear for my skis.

I know the Dakine Fall Line is mentioned a lot, but I don't know if I'll always be traveling with two pairs of skis and I know it doesn't have straps - is it overkill for one pair? Would the skis slosh around? And is it long enough for a couple pairs of 186 ON3Ps (the size is listed at 190)?

Beyond that, it seems hard to find anyone talking about other options.

Evo has their own branded one and it seems to have good reviews, and MEC has one too (with almost no reviews). Both of those are double roller bags as well, but have straps inside that would probably be useful if traveling with one pair of skis.

What do you guys use to fly with and, whatever it is, have you been stoked on it?

Douchebags are a bit pricey but can't say anything bad about them, super high quality and they just work. I have managed to fit 3 pairs of skis but one pair works just as well as you roll the bag over the tips of the skis so they are super secured and can't move at all

I've had a Dakine Boundary 200cm for the last 2 seasons and I'd say it does the job, but maybe not excellently. My major gripe about it is that the spine at the bottom (near the wheels) isn't long enough and I'd just end up dragging the bag instead of it rolling. It's a long bag, but it seems like they could have improved that. Otherwise, the lack of straps didn't phase me, usually my bag was packed pretty full so that things stayed in place. Sometimes had 1 ski, sometimes had 2, didn't really matter too much.

Durability wise, it's coming to the end of its life and I'm probably gonna replace it for this season. I probably got about 15 airplane trips out of it though.

I’ve been travelling for just over 10 years with my dakine fall line double. In all that time I’ve travelled with 1 full set, 3 with bindings and up to 8 pairs without bindings and I’ve never had damage to my skis or gear in the bag. Maybe that’s just European baggage handlers and usually the bag being so full it’s hard to throw around, but it’s plenty durable

newer ones come with a boot sack so between that and the rest of your soft goods & helmet etc its a good option to carry all your gear, clothes & equipment rather than try and wrangle multiple bags.

I have one and it’s been from the east coast to Switzerland countless times and other than a couple scratches in the material it looks brand new. Insanely durable and I’ve gotten more than my money’s worrh

3rd vote for Douchebags. Mine has been on countless flights and more recently, been thrown on and off of trains, down station stairs etc and it appears to be indestructible. It's also by far the most practical bag to wheel around, because the length adjustment means no sag. I've had pretty much all of the skis I've skied for roofbox in one and it works great no matter if you have 1, 2, or even 3 pairs at a squeeze.

The douchebags look nice. I have the Evo roller bag and I put a pair of JJ's and SFB's in it. I wrap parts of the skis in towels and use other stuff to secure the skis together.

Thanks guys, douchebags wasn’t really on my radar (assumed it would have some obnoxious branding but it actually seems subtle enough), appreciate it!

I use a sport tube and like it a lot. Different form factor than the Douchebags or Dakine since it's a hard polymer, but I haven't had any issues to date. I think you can get them in 1, 2, and 3 pair of ski capacity and fully adjustable length.

Went home to Switzerland last season with 3 pairs of mounted skis and one unmounted, plus my boots/helmet/jacket and pants in one douchebag. Other than some dust from the cargo hold it looked brand new, every penny i paid for the thing was worth it

How much did that weigh?

Trying to keep the fall line under 50lbs/22kg is a challenge with two pairs + two kids pairs, poles, and some padding/outerwear. It's super expensive if overweight at least in North America, both domestically and between Canada and US.

I like my jskis bag, I forget why I bought that instead of the the similar evo or dakine bag. Fits 2 pairs of skis with plenty of room left for other stuff.

Weighed a metric fuck ton that’s for sure, I paid out the ass for it. My point was that it’s durable as shit and is worth the money pretty much. Obviously it’ll handle one or 2 pairs super easily too. Highly recommend!
