sketchy password system

im sure this has been mentioned before..but you dont have to type in your whole password to log in. Im sure no one really has to worry about people logging in as them, but i was just wondering what causes this. Example: if my password is 'candycane' i can type in 'candyca' and hit enter..and in i go!

If i remember, Harvey said something about the password being longer then 8 characters or somehting, the encryption only took the first however many.

well that just means that there is no REAL encryption used on the passwords unless he's chopping off the value and taking the hash

No that's not what that means, it means I'm using DES-based encryption.

So yes, you only have to type the first 8 characters of your password.
