Skateboarding loses a legend

RIP Jay Adams. An original Z-Boy. Pay your respects.

No way!!, that sucks. I remember when I first saw the documentary and the movie. Made me want to surf and skate like them so bad.

its a real fucking shame. guy was a legend. i can't imagine what his life would've turned into if he didn't get into all that trouble.

we would probably have jay adams pro skater instead of tony hawk. should have been the greatest.

He was in that dogtown movie right? Sucks. How did he die? Od?

He actually died of a massive heart attack while on a surf trip. I think he was like 60 or so?

He was 53 I think.

Probably the biggest influence on my skating. I remember watching LODT when I was 12 and begining to skate then all I wanted to do was cruise and flow. Such a legend and such a shame to see him have a heart attack.

meanwhile doctors and firefighters and paramedics die every day. but yes, lets all mourn the loss of some grown up skater punk who died of [likely] self-inflicted injuries.

such an inspiration, to me wanting to rebel and smoke weed and entertain myself when i should be doing something useful with my life.

professional entertainers can mourn his death because you pay their fucking salary. the more kids that skate and buy their labels and games and shit, the more rich they get. so naturally, it is in their best interest to encourage you to support them.

this guy is probably responsible for more crime and vandalism and high school drop-outs than he is inspiration for anything productive and positive in this world.

Why do stupid as fuck comments like this come up every time a celeb dies. You don't see making commemts like this when someones parents die and they're paying their respects. People feel a fucking connection with him due to his influence in skating and they want to pay their fucking respects.

Get your head out of your house and quit being a bigotry fuck head.

im just a mean sob.

there is truth to what i say. just playing devil's advocate.

the "connection" that people feel with "celebs" is a baffling phenomenon. i mean people don't even mourn the death of their own relatives. flesh and blood. but it's a sad day when that dude who entertained me once on tv dies...

What the fuck is going on in your head right now? What do you even mean by "People don't even mourn the death of their own relatives" ? What are you basing that on?

And yes, you are aloud to mourn someone who influenced you, FFS this train of though doesn't make sense at all.

This is so dumb. Who are you talking about, specifically, that doesn't mourn the death of their own relatives? Its biologically ingrained. Yeah a lot of celebrities are fucking stupid and stupid people idolize them. But to come in here and say a person shouldn't have an emotional reaction to a pioneer of their sport, and by extension, our sport, dying unexpectedly is fucking asinine.

I get it, but he was a big part of creating what skateboarding is today. I think thats enough of something "productive" to make his death a bummer

it does though. shit happens all the time. how often do you see chicks cry their faces off because they saw katy perry in a stadium 100 yards away and can't even name their own cousins. fuck was that guy's name again? yeah the one we grew up and played with all the time. Jim's son. uhhhhh, yeah anyway, baby you're a fiiiiiiiiirewoooooorrrkkkk!

and this dude influenced what? so you rode a skateboard a few times and all of a sudden you're "connected" to some other guy who rode a skateboard but was a little better at it and on tv and magazines and shit?

your family doctor checks your dick and makes sure you don't have the aids. would you even knew if he died? would you really care? how "connected" are you? he does more for you than skater bro over there.

something about western culture and our attachment to "celebs" is, as i said, baffling. maybe it's because we know what can't do anything so imagining ourselves being someone who does do something brings us some kind of thrill and allows us to fantasize "what if that was me, living a fun and entertaining life and being rich."

fucking lottery culture...

but i guess i can't blame kids for being kids. talk to me in 10 years and we'll see where your "celebs" have brought you while you continue to pay their salaries.

it's great. we all feel that too.

but it's fucking messed up to hear people talk about emotional connections to celebs. and people call religion insane?

No, it doesn't. I have literally never met anyone who has said anything like this before in my entire life. Get your head out of your ass.

This dude influenced how all of skateboarding progressed. He brought a rad style of flow that changed how tons of people skated. If thats not influencing something than I don't know what is.

Also, when our community lost Shane Mcconckey I can pretty accurately say that the majority of free skiers felt connected to him even if it was only because they shared a similar platform of expressing themselves.

Yeah, I would and I'm sure most people would say the same. I'm not exactly sure where you are getting this sense that everyone who mourns a famous persons death is out of tune with the people around them...

You're making assumptions based on nothing and being condescending about it at the same time. How about YOU grow the fuck up dude.

Oh I totally agree that western culture makes way to big a deal about celebs life's. However, I'm not entirely sure if thats totally relevant when were talking about a skater who the vast majority of people don't even know existed.

Well I guess you can go and act like you're someone with wisdom or whatever you're trying to portray. At this point, it's pretty clear you really have no grasp on how the average person thinks.

How do you not see the obvious contradiction in this post?

First you say "yeah i get that, everybody has a role model, i like it because they did it, now i wanna do it, etc etc. we do it with work, play, style, you name it."

Then go on to say "but it's fucking messed up to hear people talk about emotional connections to celebs."

If someone inspires you to do something that is the result of an emotional connection on some level. The celeb doesn't have to feel it towards you to make it ok to express sadness at their death.

People can feel connections to all kinds of people. Why are you on this website? Most likely to connect with fellow skiers. I would hardly call Jay Adams a "celeb," even though he influenced countless skaters. People like to be around success and have influence in their lives, Jay provided that and it's acceptable to mourn his loss. As it was people to mourn Shane and CR and so many others that have passed away pursuing a similar passion.

exactly. would you have gone into a thread after CR's death or Sarah Burke's and said what youve been saying?

Anathema your cynicism isnt justified. There is nothing wrong with people getting to know famous people and having feelings for them. Ive knew alot about warnick and philip seymour hoffman and was justifiably upset when they oded, and im sure their families appreciate that they were not alone in mourning their loss.

Take a chill pill man

hilarious, a guy riffing on people for mourning the loss of someone who was liked/an influence/whatever it may be that probably said the same stuff when CR, Shane and sarah passed away. either you had a change of heart or you're just retarded.

Are you seriously comparing SARAH BURKE to this skater guy? To be honest I don't know the guy at all, never even heard of him... so idk what he's done... But, I don't think anyone has the right to hate on Sarah Burke, for what shes done for womens skiing and the sport of freestyle skiing alone.... Comparing her to this guy? idk.... She's ACTUALLY a role model.

BTW i'm not hating on this dude. i dont know him, and im not gonna be ignorant haha. I was just saying that in defense of Sarah.

CR/Sarah/Shane didnt influence people to go to prison for assault/drug charges though, or become a heroin addict, or hell, even orchestrating a methamphetamine deal.

Did a little research on the guy... Yeah, it's sad he died. But for him to be an inspiration for kids? Come on. Tony Hawk was the guy I looked up to when I was starting to skateboard, even Mike Mo Capaldi was someone to look up to when I started skating.....

Uhhhh... What does a tribute from Tony Hawk have to do with Jay Adams being a good role model... that's completely irrelevant to the discussion right now. Just because he got a tribute from Tony Hawk doesn't mean all of his past felonies go away...

1. That makes no sense, if you're gonna quote me, quote what I actually say.

2. The people who were my role model as a kid.... Still are.

3. Just because Tanner didn't promote a pretty picture for freeskiing doesn't mean he didn't do a lot of good things for the industry... Oh he smoked some weed, oh well. At least he wasn't in and out of prison.... T-Hall can still be an inspiration (#inspiya'd) to kids..... He didn't do half the shit that Jay did.

Lol you said he wasn't an inspiration to kids when there are countless people in the world who grew up watching this guy skate, and wanted to skate like him. I don't know what you're getting at now. And you do know CR was in CCREW right? They all promoted that fuck shit ski every day mentality much like jay did for skating. and he became and addict and eventually shook, why does that mean anything? Do you have an issue with people that have demons? does that not mean skaters with drug addiction, or just people in general with addiction can't relate and like the dude?

Yeah, Jay did a lot for the skating world I just read about him. I never said he didn't do shit for the skating world either. All i ever said was he really wasn't a great role model. And if you can't agree with that then I don't know dude.

My top 3 role models

Derek Jeter

Dale Jr.

Randy Howell

3 people who are a PERFECT example for their fans and have contributed a fair amount of accomplishments to their sport, that's what I'd think a role model is.

The amount of hate in this thead is ridiculous. This thread is meant to celebrate what Jay Adams did for skateboarding. Sure he made mistakes in the past, but there's no reason to bash him and say his death is irrelevant or that he doesn't deserve to be praised for pretty much putting skateboarding on the map. Jay did for skateboarding what Candide did for skiing. The dude had cleaned up. He had a family.

True pioneer. Rest in Peace JAY ADAMS. It's all perfect transition in Heaven.

Your logic is so contradictory. You have a photo of Warnick, who died of herion then come on here and hate on Jay. Oh you read some shit up about him and you've made a conclusion about it? Are you fucking retarded? That's like me doing 5 minutes of reading then coming to a conclusion about Arab Israeli conflict. Jay and the Z boys revolutionised how skateboarding is today. They're the reason we have bowls and skateboarders put so much emphasises on having a flow style.

Jay also never told anyone to do drugs, bash people and fuck up your life. He wanted everyone to do their best in life. So fuck off with your uneducated opinion on Jay and do more than 5 minutes of research before making yourself look like a fuckwit.

Stop quoting me and i'll leave your skater bro thread alone dude. I don't care if I look like a complete idiot... If anyone, you're the idiot for idolizing a guy like this.

But hey, if you guys say that he changed the sport and was a good role model for kids, then whatever, i'll believe you... Like I said, I didn't know who the guy even was, and I use to skateboard, I mostly watched the berrics and shit like that though. I was judging the guy based on what I read about him, facts.

So maybe I was wrong, but who cares? If he was an inspiration to you then why should you care what I say about him....?

lol'd though when you called me a bigot.
