Skateboarding 2020

As you all know skateboarding will be making it's debut in the 2020 Tokyo games.

I've been noticing such a divide in people who say that it is good for skateboarding and how it's going to ruin skateboarding and that the Olympics will suck the life out of the sport... just like skiers did before Sochi.

So what do you guys think? Has skiing been ruined by the Olympics?

Good question. In all honesty, who could you potentially see skating for USA/Canada? A lot of names that come to mind would either not pass an IOC test or wouldn’t want to “sell out” maybe safe or like Nyjah...

I don’t think it’s going to be taken seriously and Brazil is going to win regardless haha. Curious to hear what other people say...

It is literally illegal

Honestly that's a pretty dumb take... Street skiing is just as illegal as street skating, and skiing in a terrain park is kind of the equivalent to skating in a skate park. There is definitely a bigger scene for street skating then street skiing, but they are comparable.

Fair. However, in my experience, people are fairly tolerable of urban skiing and even pretty down to watch/let you keep trying a trick. I've literally been skating a curb in an abandon parking lot with my friends and had the cops roll up and tell me to leave the "private property" and stop the "noise violation." Yes, any action "sports" are going to be fairly similar, however IMO the hate skaters get is 100x worse. You asked what makes them different, to me - thats it

freeskiing ruin by olympics ? How?

Strangely, I think it's the opposite, especially how the women's competition has evolved.

Before 2014 you had just Kaya Turski, Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen, Karie Herman and Dara Howell who shared the podium at X Game.

And since the olympic he has easily 10 top athlete unlike in 2010-2014 ..

Kelly Sildaru

Mathilde Gremaud

Giulla Tanno

Sarah Hoefflin

Jennie Lee Burnasson

Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen

Emma Dahlstrom

Tess Ledeux

Johanna Killi

Maggie Voisin

It's funny to see Dara Howell since 2014 .. she is completely lost I think her career is over

Olympic Champion has zero result since 2015

Serious question: what will be the triple cork equivalent in skate competition? We all know ya gotta spin to win but what do you guys think everyone’s going to feel obligated to throw?

If it was illegal, shops wouldn't be able to sell skateboards, and cities wouldn't make skate parks.

If you play most sports in a street setting, you will most likely get in trouble. Skateboarding is just more common to do in public spaces.

“Next up, skating for Team USA is Kareem Campbell...”

Are we past kick back Smith’s? Those were in everyone’s edits for years.

I like to think that as raw as skating has always been it doesn't have as big as a "comp jock" problem as skiing has had, so I'm not too worried. Stoked that so many guy will get to compete as Olympians and have that experience. They deserve it and so does the sport.

Also not a sport.

Your the worst type of guy.

There is obviously more to it than just being a sport, but skiing is a sport. I'd love to here your opinion on why it's not

Ski racing is a sport because you know who the winner is. How do you determine which 360 mute grab is better? It's subjective; so did the winner really win? B.S. Great activity, but not a sport.

So Gymnastics, Surfing, Figure Skating, Diving, anything that is does not involve racing in X Games, is not a sport.

I've been living a lie.

Gymnastics, figure skating, and diving have defined ways the tricks are preformed. They are completely uniform and style is absent, so they are not scored subjectively. You are correct about X games.

Honestly, solid point. But, if we don't judge a bad mute 360 vs a good (or innovative) mute 360, then we would have aerials. So that's why I think skiing is a sport, just with different criteria that adds a level of creativity. So I get your point, and I get it if park skiing is just a hobby for you. It's competition for some people, whether it be park, freeride, or halfpipe. Some people want to be the best in the world, and some people just do it for fun.

Subjectively the best in the world.
