Silverton Mountain travel question

I am looking to plan a trip to Silverton Mountain and plan to meet my son in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It looks like we would have to drive highway 550 through the San Juan mountains to get there. We are planning for a mid-March date. Has anyone driven highway 550 this time of year? I was curious if the mountain passes were open in March?

Mountain pass from that side should be fine unless you catch a big storm. It can close for avalanche mitigation but they keep it open/plowed year-round. It's a gorgeous drive. Have fun!
