You can pick one of the two features in a ski:
1) the ability to hit rails with confidence and high success rate
2) the ability to carve properly
If you go for 1, detune hard underfoot (and slightly under bindings if you're still learning the basics of hitting rails). To a point where the edges are completely round & smooth and you couldn't hurt a baby's butt with 'em. If you feel any kind of hesitation in doing it yourself, trust a professional. You can fuck your skis for good if you don't know what you're doing. A proper detune will give your edges massively longer lifespan compared to just dulling them a bit or not detuning/dulling at all.
If you go for 2, have them sticks always in good wax & bases grinded (these actually count for 1 as well) and edges sharpened every once in a while and carve like there's no tomorrow. This is something you simply can not properly achieve with your edges detuned.
