Shit at skateboarding thread

yo i’m ass at skating (other than chill shit). can you old skater men/women give me some pointers on what best to practice and what not to do. thanks love you

How tall/heavy are you?

how old are you?

what are you riding (deck width and length, trucks width, wheel size and durometer hardness, bearings brand)?

Once all that is taken care of you just need to ride your board everyday and once you get really comfy you can start learning how to ollie, aaron kyro makes some good instructional videos on his yt channel braille skateboarding.

Starting off is kind of like feeling your way around in the dark. You have to try different things, different postures, different movements, to find out what works and what doesnt. Just like you cant really explain how to properly throw a baseball, you just gotta get the feel of it by practicing. Also if you are old you are gonna progress alot slower than kids do. I never even tried skateboarding until college.

im not that good i mainly just roll around popping ollies and shuvits but i like how skating reminds you of how to keep your body somewhat athletic, flexible, and springy. Its really good for your core strength too because to do anything you need to have your core taught to keep you somewhat rigid on your board for balance.

For skate shoes just wear adidas samba indoor soccer style shoes or even tennis shoes. Whatever works. Running shoes are not good for most ppl but some ppl like them.

beginner tricks for u to research and try:

grinds- (curbs or small ledges and rails)

50-50

5-0

nose slappy

back boardslide

quarterpipe-

rock to fakie

rock n roll

fakie tail

50-50

slashes(fs/bs)

flat ground tricks-

shuvs

180s

powerslide (both ways)

powerslide 180

fakie bigspin

half cab

pretty simple but they will take practice

getting a nice ollie (cannot stress this enough) and that list ^

will give you a pretty solid, foundation to skate tricks.

dont forget - everyone is different. u might figure out some sides of skating work better for you.

pay attention to that, focus on what comes most naturally and what feels best to do.

my last piece of advice: dont be afraid to pester the older kids at skateparks for trick tips if you see them doing tricks u struggle with. better than youtube "How To" vids.

Why did you make a thread if you arent going to follow up?

Find a mini ramp. I spent a couple years occasionally trying to learn flat ground tricks but I could never really get into it. As soon as I started skating mini ramp I progressed 10x faster and it’s way more fun and rewarding

i’m mmm roughly like 6 foot and 145 ish pounds. i’m 15. currently i’m riding a 8.5 with stage 11 hollow independent trucks, reds bearings, i have onsen wheels (like size 48) i might swap on some spit fire wheels that are a bit smaller.

I personally ride a 35 inch deck from skull skates which feels perfect for me bc im 6’1 and 210-220. Most decks from regular skate brands vary from 30.5-32.5, which is ridiculous to me because the hip width of people varies much more than just 2 fucking inches. I think a big part of the reason most adults give up skateboarding in their 20s and 30s is because at age 15 their hips were 2-3 inches narrower than they are now, and they are still riding the 30.5 inch long kids deck they rode as a teenager.

thats the most original advice i can give you op. All the other suggestions in this thread are good too, but ive never come across a post online that mirrors my sentiment; you want to have a board that feels comfortable relative to your hip width.......so you dont feel awkward trying to squeeze your 36 inch wide ass onto a 30 inch twig of a skate deck. Obviously thats an extreme example but having personally ridden boards ranging for 30-36 inches, it feels 1000x better to be on a board that lets you stretch your legs out and stand naturally, without feeling crowded in by the nose and tail of your board. Of course you dont want to ride too long of a deck either; i have a 35 inch deck and a 36 inch deck, and although i can skate both fine, i prefer the 35 inch deck.

i’m riding a deck by a local company and it’s fits me pretty well. i’m not a very wide person so most decks i can stand comfortably on. i also have a spare set up (a 8.25 chocolate) but i prefer my new one because it fits my feet better.

i run my trucks a little tighter than they come because i like to bomb hills (or at least try to). i’ve never heard of asym before .

The looser your trucks are the cooler you are

Asym decks are all the rage now

Its ok as long as you skate like a man.

can you at least ollie?

(;_;) ...

no shit, I still have tricks just none of em are flip tricks lol. Always sucks when some lil kid asks you if you can kick flip and you’re just like “naw, but I can do other stuff...”

Been skating since middle school and never learned a single flip trick /claim

I'm with you there....well.... I can land shuvs approximately 10% of the time.

I can tigerclaw a longboard though!

I think being able to ollie up a curb is pretty respectable even if you cant do much in the way of flip tricks. Skateboarding is hard, if you are halfway decent you shouldnt get too down just because the pros make it lok so easy.
