I got killer shin bang last season and after 2 days of skiing this year theyre back. I have spk boots and theyre probably a big asset to it. i need suggestions on what to do. new boots maybe?
Naw, haha. It's normally caused by landing backseat or having too much space between your shin and you boot. I've also heard of people shaving their legs to help stop it, but I'm honestly not willing to go that far. Haha.
There is no magic boot that will cure shinbang, I don't care what anyone says about Full Tilts. If you have a boot that fits properly and you don't land backseat on every hit, you won't get shinbang. Get booster straps if it's bad.
Take the power strap on your boot, and wrap it underneath the shell touching the liner. Then buckle your boots up starting with the middle buckle, then the top, then the bottom ones. This helped me a ton. Make sure all your buckles are done up really tight.
Just don't land back seat and stomp your tricks clean...
Just kidding man, got spk myself and I get it especially when you can't stomp your jumps centered. Best thing making sure your cuff is up high. Pull the draws string tight and put the strap right over the top of the boot. Helps a bit.
I had the same problem with my spks. I found that the 2 buckle system wasnt giving me enough support. this year I went to a bootfitter and got fitted with dabellos which i find give me way more support. But everyone has different feet so go ask the experts
go to a boot fitter and get boots that fit correctly. you can't be a brand whore when it comes to boots. i have atomic hawx and they are the most comfortable boot i have ever had + shin bang free.
go to a surefoot, or a bootfitter that actually takes the time to measure the exact width of your foot and matches it to a shell. Don't get a boot that is too big, too small is better for shin bang, but that tends to destroy your toes.
Invest in some booster straps, they definitely help.
Give your shins some time to heal, avoid jumps for a few days.
I suffer real bad too, doesn't matter how much money i spend in properly fitted boots with custom insoles and booster straps, a few backseat landings and i'm struggling again.
Honestly I think its because outside of skiing I don't do much sport anymore and I think my lower leg muscles arn't man enough to take the backseat landings and so its stressing the tendon in the front of my shin or maybe even its the beginning of shin splints.
If thats the case the solution is conditioning, stretching and building of the lower leg muscles. Take a good look at yourself, if like me you have a case of 'chicken legs' then get working out. Lookup exercises for building the tibialais anterior in particular.
You could try a couple things with your spks before trading them in...a booster strap, custom liner, foot bed with a heel lift to keep you more forward on landings, making a couple vertical cut-outs and putting them parallel to each other on the inside tongue of the boot on either side of your shin so that pressure will be displaced to the outside of your leg and not directly on your shins. Also, wrapping your leg with medical tape 3 or 4 times on a diagonal line will keep the pain down a lot. Sometimes you'll get it on a bad landing with even the best fitting boots but these things have helped me a lot. If I see or think of anything else, I'll let you know.
i got tilts and I still get shinbang.. got it today pretty bad actually cause I over shot a trany and landed pretty flat. it sucks.. skiing with shin bang is a skill in itself haha
anyways just try to always stomp your shit and stay forward in your boots and land with your landings, landing back seat even off little stuff can lead the shinbang really fast
landing backseat is inevitable if you're pushing your skiing. the only things i've had work were a combo of boosterstraps and "the shin eliminator" insert. best 40$ i've ever spent.
I got really bad shinbang two years ago and I tried everything and thought that there was nothing that I could do about it. I was pretty much right, I just grew out of it eventually...
The last time i had killer shin bang was because the boots i got were defective. There was something messed up with the tongue of the boot. Try pulling the tongue all the way up when its tightened and loosen the buckles where its hurting but adjust it a little tighter on other buckles so you still have enough support and you dont bull a t-hall and break your fucking ankles
here's a general list of the main causes of shinbang (in no particular order):
-no footbed
-boot is wrong size (usually too big than too small)
-continually landing backseat
-having a gap between the tongue of the boot and your shin, either because you have chicken legs or simply because the tongue just doesn't match up to your leg
-boots that are too soft for you
-boots that are too stiff for you
-boots that are too low on your leg
do any of those sound familiar or describe your set up? this is what you need to address, not what brand of boot you buy.
Shin bang is caused by landing backseat and having wiggle room in you boot where you calf and shin is. The best way to avoid shin bang is dont land back seat. I no its easier said then done tho haha. I got these foam inserts called the Eliminators from Lahouts in NH, you put them in the front of your boots and they are nice pading and make it so there is no wiggle room. They baiscly saved my season you get ZERO shin bang when wearing them . I highly recomend them!
What I suggest is either your boots don't properly fit, you aren't buckling them tight enough or your the tissues and muscles on your tibs are all bunched up. You will need to smooth them out with a wooden spoon. It hurts like a bitch but it will be relieving.
would like to bump this thread because i put some beer cozzies in my tongue of the boot and the top of my shins are feeling awsome. although, about 2-3 inches above my ankle i have shinbang, im thinking about maybe putting the cozzies in the bottom of the boot aswell?
I have really bushy leg hair so when my shins move about it really tugs at my hair follicles. I only shave the front of my shins as that's the only place it hurts.
But that was last year with my improperly fitted Salomon boots, this year I bought some Dalbello NX 7.6 boots, they're nice and snug with a very soft tongue so I haven't really gotten any shinbang.
When I jib I wear my SPKs like skate shoes, loose/floppy. But when I plan on doing anything with air time i'll strap up tight. Just keep em tight if you think you might be landing with a bang
