howdy I have a question regarding shell fitting

I can stick a marker in there (15mm) and it barely fits, I cant shove it all the way down to the bootboard.

But since idk if I measure it correctly I ask here:

What do you measure? how much you can stick up the curved part? or the spacing between the upper edge of the curved part and your heel? enlighten me
 
That sounds about right, length wise. Try not to use a solid object like a pen, as it will not curve to fit. Try using your first and second finger instead.

! finger or about 10mm space would be considered a race fit (ie very tight high performance fit), 2 fingers, about 20mm would be what most people go for. It would be a snug fit without being overly tight.

Dont forget though its good practice to ensure your foot is in a neutral postion when doing a shell check. If your foot is pronating alot, chances are your foot will be longerthen it will be when you have a footbed in the boot. This is why often I make the footbed first as it gives a much better shape for doing the shell check.

So I have my footbed inserted atm, do I need to measure the spacing between my heel and the boot in the curved part? or like the upper part of the curve

I can't fit two fingers in the curve properly because the upper edge of the curve is bottlenecking, in the curve itself i think it'll be around 1.2/3 - 2 fingers
 
All those little things are what you need to look at, it could be that the hee cup is the wrong shape for you, even though the length is ok. Its all these little things that boot fitters deel with every day, so tahts why its always recomended that you go to a good fitter.

People often just think its length and width, but there is so so much more, thats why it takes years to get ok at bootfitting.

For you, I would take them to a bootfitter and have him asses them. Should not cost anything, but there is so much that goes into it, it would be inpossible to go over it all online.
 


The bootfitters here are so bad, when I was new to skiboots and they sold me $600 full tilts in a size too big.

last time I was there (to check out what they had) they insisted on measuring me up and fitting me into some boots

they:

-measured my feet with some kind of computer resulting in 108mm wide feet ( ski in 98's and swim in everything above 100mm) he used some computer program to measure it with after the scan

-shellfitted myself and when I did he told me 'thats not how you determine the correct lenght because all liners are different, you can only determine a good fit by putting your feet into the liner"

-fitted me into 104mm boot after I told him that the salo quest he fitted me in could be narrower

-fitted me into a 60 flex rent-style beginner boot altho I said to him that I wanted to freeride with them

- ran out of boots and out of desperation fitted me into a womens boot which flexed like spaghetti

- said their trim to fit heat moldable insoles would fix everything

- told me boot modication is out of date and doesnt happen anymore due to custom shell technology

- told me to just deal with footpain because my full tilts are narrow and narrow boots hurt. (altho it was the boot that was too big causing cramps)

- when I corrected them on something they giae me "oh you're just a know-it-all kid" and "Ive been selling skiboots for over 10 years" looks.

the list goes on and on. They are so ignorant.

Im going to visit a legit fitter in a few weeks ( three hour drive ) but just wanted to know beforehand if the fit was correct lengthwise.

Yeah he sounds a pretty awful bootfitter.

Some things to note though, If you measure 108mm wide, what length are you? A 26 boot may be 98mm wide but in a size 29 that same boot will be 104mm wide. Its not just as easy to look at the width of the foot, you also need to correspond that to the length of the foot.

But the rest sounds pretty bad.

Go find a good bootfitter, take your boots with you and have him look at them.

Im a size 26 in almost every brand. the boot I am shellfitting is a 26 Salomon ghost 120.

I've measured my foot using some tools out of the shed, the result was a width of 95-97 mm while standing, but yeah my local bootfitter is probably as bad is it gets lol

Tom is bang on with everything he has said here. The shop you are referring to is sadly a common experience over here in Europe... where are you exactly? Enough people read these threads so if you can tell us where you are or next to which mountain you ski at, we can recommend some good shops to visit.
 
I live in a mountainless country (The Netherlands), there are only 2-3 reputable bootfitters in my country, I'll be visiting one of them tommorow. As this is a non-skiing country and about 85% of our skiing-population is beginner-intermediate. So even in a shop who carriers every collection in the world, the bootfitting is rather poor.I usually ski around 1-3 months a year depending on the situation at Risoul 1850/Vars and Le Grand Serre Che in France.
