Shaun White withdraws from slopestyle

"Multiple X-games gold medalist Shaun White has withdrawn from the slopestyle event, citing a severe case of softcockitis"

That's how i read it anyway.

What a pussy. Everyone asks for bigger jumps and when they get them they complain. Top athletes are getting pretty spoiled. Mark has broken ribs and is not complaining about the course. Not many people are fans of step down jumps, but when the run is that steep and you have limited snow you cant do much about it. All in all it seems like a pretty good course.

I'm done -.- I mean seriously, skiing and snowboarding are 'extreme' sports. When you are legitimately the best in the world at something and it's the first time your sport gets recognized in the most renowned competition in the entire freaking universe it is such a bad move to withdraw from it. Not only was he representing his sport but also the USA and it reflects badly on the entire team. It's not like everyone else from america is going to cancel so that we have nothing but honestly if I were in that position no matter how hard the course is I would go out and represent my nation. I mean yes, there is a risk involved in skiing and boarding on this insanely hard course, but so is there everywhere. Any easy rail or tiny jump or just skiing down a bunny hill (remember Natasha Richardson?) could result in a disaster, not just huge features. I just don't agree with this decision.

i hate how the keep bringing torstein's injury up when talking about the course being dangerous. he fell on the top rail lol, it had nothing to do with the jumps being too big.

What a joke. He's letting down a lot of people in order to pursue his goal of a 3rd gold in the halfpipe, which I hope he doesn't get. Honestly I think he's just afraid of the course. Maybe if he had done X-Games he would have known what big jumps to expect.COWARD!

Just now watching NBC and I hate how they say ALL athletes are complaining about the "dangerous" course. I only hear snowboarders complaining.

I think the worst part is that because of his decision, no rider will be able to take his spot because its so short notice. A lot of guys put a ton of work into trying to get to the olympics and now they won't be able to fill the open spot that he left.

I hesitate to blast all snowboarders for this sort of stuff....here is a picture of Tora Bright (Australian snowboarder competing in slope, pipe and boardercross) having a makeshift ice bath in a trash can in her hotel room in Sochi. Shaun White is a greater pussy than her.

How can you hate on him for wanting to win?

If Tom Wallisch wanted to try pipe, was going to compete, but after a few runs decided not to compete because he didn't want to get hurt and risk his slopestyle medal would you be hating on him like that?

Instead of making history trying to do slopestyle and pipe. Shaun whites gonna make history bringing home 3 gold medals in the pipe, no ones done that before.

Sad to see other athletes bashing him for his decision. It seems to me they're quite reliefed he is not competing. Hate on White as much as you want, but that guy is more talented than most of the field and he could take a win for sure. He trained his ass to qualify for slope and let's not forget he had a private park to throw down and get better. He IS Shaun White, and he can pull it off. Shame on the others, especially those who can take the win and still bash on him.

let's be honest, unless the judging is rigged there's no way he'd take gold in slope. he's just simply not as good as some of the other guys out there. Although with Horgmo done and McMorris injured I guess the chance might be there.

I'm worried that by cutting the jumps down they are just going to be really flat and fast step downs which suck for skiers, especially ones who want to triple. Thoughts?

You're right, but since when has the judging not been rigged in EVERY competition? Let's not forget Mcmorris 95 score run which include a double wildcat! He is the best, but judges always reward him a little bit too much. Same thing happens with Shaun (that pipe win with the ass check). So there's that possibility you are talking about IMO!

It's annoying that because he withdrew a negative light gets cast on the course and the sport in general when it should be on himself for being a little punk.

There is no time to bring in an alternate so the US team only has Sage and Chas. I'd be pretty let down if I were next in line to go to the Olympics but couldn't because he backed out last minute.

Yeah I would be VERY disappointed. Tom wouldn't bail with a mild wrist injury anyway. He's more committed than that. He doesn't give up.

There's no way he'll beat Max or Seb though. Or even Mark while injured for that matter. He doesn't have any rail tricks, he isn't good at slope anymore. I don't think he's too scared, I think he saw what the field could do, realized he couldn't win and left. The dude throws the EXACT same pipe run everyday. How much does he need to "focus?" I honestly think Sage is going to put down a crazy run and shock everyone. But as a snowboarder, I can agree strapping into your bindings with a hurt wrist would be a pain. What a fucking joke. He got all the glory for qualifying for two events, called it good, then left. Fuck you Mr. White, Fuck you.

I would deal with and compensate for shrinkage given the opportunity to skulk around in that icy water

I don't know if it had even the slightest bit to do with his fall but that top section is interesting. That drop in is steep as fuck and boom you're on the takeoffs. Granted the takeoffs are mellow but they could have tossed a little more transition in there.

I don't understand how the big jumps are the problem. If they're built wrong that's one thing but all i seem to here is THEY'RE TOO BIG.

Was really looking forward to shaun getting his ass kicked in slope

Yeah, that's why he's on the team right now.

You're missing the big picture here. He doesn't care about slope, why would you sacrifice your better event to compete in something else. He wanted to try something new, tried, got hurt enough to make a good judgement call for his future event, and moved on. You should too

Honestly I'm wondering when he made this decision. wouldn't be surprised if he made it a couple days ago and the "injury" was just his way to make a clean exist stage left a few days after.

As far as his spot I know somebody they should give it to. Wouldn't win but I bet he would charge it.

On the one hand, I'm fucking amped that I don't have to hear about Shaun White competing in slopestyle. On the other, Torah looks hot in that picture, nice body.

What's he sacrificing? It's a fucking sprained wrist. Mark has broken ribs, he's still riding. Shaun could easily do both events. I would actually gain a bit of respect for the dude if he just said he knew he couldn't compete with the others.

Give your incredibly intelligent post a few moments and really think about it. If it doesn't help here's a hint: Skiing is not the same thing as snowboarding.

I thought this too for a second, but now we won't see him beat, and we'll only hear about him not competing every ten seconds. And about Torah, holy shit, she makes this whole no fap February stuff even tougher.

Well then I guess they need to make seperate courses then don't they. Blue square for boarders. Double black diamond for skiers

You're missing the point. If White doesn't care about slope as YOU say, THEN HE SHOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN A SPOT FROM SOMEONE WHO DID.

Isn't this his second time doing this? He's scared to lose and wasted someone else's spot. Bullshit. I lost respect for him.

Why drop out after having millions and millions of money spent on him to train for slope and pipe, spend that money on someone who wont puss out after riding the course once or twice.. Danny is going to win pipe anyways

How many times has skiers and snowboarders competed on the same course without either one complaining about the course? Too many for me to even start counting. So wouldn't you think that when concern is actually brought up about a course being too risky for snowboarding, there are some actual grounds for these opinions? Or are snowboarders just not cool because they're not Wallisch?

lol At X games this year max honestly could have done 3 triples in his run (he did 2) and he did a hard way 450 on up on the rail section. No way shaun is prepared to step up to that level of snowboarding at his age and point in his career. Shauns gonna get this last gold at the olympics then call it quites id imagine. He'll change his image from an athlete to an ambassador of the sport of something of that nature(commentator maybe) so he can keep bleeding money from redbull and snowboarding.

SW knows about exploitation, he's just making it in his favor. Smarter than the rest of the field willing to do anything like a chubby overeager prom date.

You're being very unreasonable here.

He wanted to try for a new medal.

He didn't take anyones spot, he qualified to be there.

He rode the course and hurt himself.

I agree they should have had someone on backup to take an injured riders place, but that's not the way they regulate and organize the teams.

He doesn't want to hurt himself anymore in slope and jeopardize his pipe run

He's more focused on winning, excuse my Sal'ism here, "Threepeating" in pipe than silver or bronze in slope.

What does that mean? You don't throw caution to the wind in order to medal at a new event when you're already defending and setting a new record for another medal.

I am by no means a fan of Shaun White, but he's not really at fault here, he just wants to focus on his main event
