Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

So after we release five terrorists, we are going to charge this soldier with desertion. I agree with the charge but why did we make such an effort to get him back if he is most likely going to spend the rest of his life in a federal prison? I think the trade was a poor decision by Obama and he didn't even have congressional approval to do this. Anyways, what do you guys think?

I hate getting involved in politics but Obama was 100% stupid. Bergdahl is complete scum, he deserted his post and six soldiers were killed trying to find him. There is no excuse that can be made on his behave. Six lives are gone because of his selfish and dishonorable actions, not to mention the five terrorist we traded for his release.

i can understand this feeling, but the call made was perfect IMO. we always bring home our soldiers, even if we are almost sure they fucked up like this. but to assume anything is being guilty til proven innocent. so you get him home, and then you charge him, like they're doing. and it looks like he's gonna get his comeuppance

i can see why it might dismay people (beyond the political argument it was), but you don't fuck with good protocol like this because of a hunch or an emotional response. if we decide we can just leave people out there for things they allegedly did, im sure you can see how that could lead to problems

It's the method that people have an issue with, more than even getting him. Though it was originally suspected that he deserted, he is innocent until proven guilty, which happened after the trade. Therefore, it was the right/legal thing to do to attempt to rescue him. The problem is that we have side we don't negotiate with terrorists, and then we went ahead and did exactly that. If he had been rescued by a special forces team, there would be much less backlash. As far as the 6 deaths in trying to rescue him, that is where it gets tricky. While we do have an obligation to protect are soldiers, and he was technically in good standing (innocent until proven guilty), the goal is always to minimize losses. While I don't agree with the trade, after already losing 6 and still having an obligation to save him, it does become easier to understand. At the same time, seeing him proven guilty makes the whole situation leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Also, I am by no means an expert, this was simply my understanding/interpretation of the events.

I live in Hailey Idaho, where Bowe is from. His dad was our UPS driver for years. Do I think he was a deserter? Yes. Do I think that he deserved to die in a hands of the Taliban, no. He will face the military code of conduct and will face a court marshal. This kid has issues. He was not fit for front line service and should not have been there. That being said, seeing what his parents went through for that 5 years was hell. No matter what you think of this, just know, there are people that care and wanted him home safe. Yes, there is the argument that there were good solders that do not get to go home to their families because of Bowe's desertion. I feel for all sides of the equation. No parent should have to go through sending a child to war. We as the US do not leave any man or woman behind.

On a side note. I still am not sure why we didn't just drug the 5 in the prisoner swap and stick a remote bomb up their asses. Give them a few days to get back with all their buddies and blow them all to shit.
