Seriously? I mean seriously? Good lord...

where are you from? you have no idea how many white trash rednuck fucks drive around in their ford with a giant confederate flag on the back window and flags on the doors. the ones that clip on, you know.

bangor PA is 15 minutes from my place. they have the largest chapter of KKK still existing in the mid atlantic lol

You know that outside of the whole slavery thing Jefferson Davis had some things they did for that short lived country that actually worked out well right?

And doesn't it surprise you? They have National Ice Cream appreciation day.

Seriously? I had no idea and I live half an hour from Bangor...I mean I knew about the rednecks and the flags, but not the KKK chapter lol.

first of all cobracommanders sig is the shit.

yet, i've seen black men selling confederate memorabilia at flea markets hahaha

this is a horrible idea.

who really cares, let them have their month. It's not like anyones being hurt by remembering the CSA and what it was about.

except for every black person in the state.

now im not one to advocate comparing things to nazis/hitler, but this is pretty damn similar.

there is little difference between this, and a nazi history month.

how would you feel about a caucasian history month?

we could celebrate Caesar, and Lenin and such...

good idear right?

every month is Caucasian history month.

but this isnt about a race. this is about a group who was literally fighting to preserve slavery. yet we are supposed to honor them with a history month? i think not

and generally i think that the whole comparison to nazis/hitler is uncalled for and a gross exaggeration. but here i think its a pretty accurate analogy.

i realize slavery was not the only cause. but killing jews was not the only cause of WWII.

regardless, i think honoring a group who blatantly supported slavery is wrong.

this for us Historians is very interesting. It would be similar to having a Nazi history month on Germany, which I doubt exists officially but anyways. If you visit the Civil war museum in Richmond, VA there is a lot of intriguing history about the Confederacy that are not mentioned in the history books. One of my friend's Dad came into history class back in 8th grade and he tried to explain the cause of the Confederacy, he said that Slavery will always be wrong, but the Confederates wanted to fight for their rights just as the Patriots did in the Revolutionary War.

but as i mentioned, nazis werent fighting only for the elimination of jews either.

im all for learning about confederates, and even looking at history from their point of view. id be a terrible history teacher if i didnt. you can learn a ton from looking at an event from different perspectives. but giving them a month and HONORING them? wrong.

People blatantly honor Hitler in public speaking classes cause it can't be denied that he was an AMAZING orator.

yes. but again, thats not giving him a history month, honoring him for his accomplishments. its looking at how he spoke. not really similar, even remotely.

my family used to have a cabin in my uncles farm in tennesse, the closest town by it was called lynchburg, also happens to be the county where jack daniels distiliaries are, also happens to be a dry county as well,

Where exactly does that article say that the state of Virginia will be honoring the values of the Confederacy?

i would just like to say that the history taught in public high schools across the country is so skewed and misleading that it leads to large gaps of the history books not being included, and that the only way to find true unbias history is to visit said historic area. the perception of slavery in the south is also very bias, as the lynch em up, buy em, work em, kill em idealogy is incorrect. for those younger kids who dont appreciate history, slave owners actually owned the slave, as in you owning a lawn mower, now you purchase and use the slave to do field work and house work, you wouldnt kill said slave just for the fuck of it, just as you wouldnt light your lawn mower on fire because you didnt like the paint tone. thats a loss of investment and profit, thus the worst slavery is after slavery was abolished and there was share cropping and tenant farming, as they didn't own the black men any more so they could treat them worse with less consequence to their wallet.

i do agree that slavery is wrong and should not be celebrated, but i must commend those who have helped to further the american society/economy and public through their slave works. A month dedicated to celebrating confederacy is unnecessary and unconstitutional i believe, yet im not posotive. well im tired as fuck so peace out ns.

How about fuck commemorative months. The idea itself either implies we shouldn't give a shit for the other 11 months or that we are too retarded to remember this specific minority actually exists. Shits either worth remembering and being relevant all the time or not at all, juLly shouldn't be known for anything else other than a great time to light up a grill.

we did a project in 9th grade where we had to put 5 evils in a box. there was a really strange new kid in the class. the kid put this picture in. our teacher went into shock when he presented.

the south has their own culture and history, why not celebrate it?slavery was only one part of it.. you guys need to learn history.

the nazis had other parts of their culture. why not celebrate them?

this isnt a celebration of southern culture. this is a celebration of confederacy. a group of people who fought to defend slavery. period.

It was about the state rights, in the idea of states rights. Many southern states were feeling like the federal government was having too much say in how individual states ran themselves. The issue of slavery led up to it. but it was by no means the cause.
