recently my brother bought a new laptop because he was fed up with his old one. well it so happens that he gave me the old one for free and said i can try and fix it. so ive come to u NS. My problem is that the screen will not turn on so to say. I can see the desktop just not very good at all i have to pay close attention to the screen to see anything. Ive tried hooking it up to a seperate monitor and it wont work. soo anyone here know how to fix this problem.

well first of all if is a laptop u may need to turn the brightness up find the Fn key and the sun and press, if this does nothing try to update the video driver. Also check your video card setting depending on maker you can turn the brightness up. If this does not work your screen may be bad so take the bottom off and check all the wires going into screen, if this is not the case you may want to replace the screen.
 
dude if it's showing the desktop the computer is working fine i would guess. and if it's still really dim when you put it into a dif monitor then it has got to be your video card for sure. maybe updating the driver will help but if the video card got wet or something you may be out of luck. it sounds busted man.
 
dont listen to him, if a video card gets wet it will fry the whole BUS which in turn kills the computer, since the video card is directly linked to the BUS. Trust me man i am a computer tech.
 
No, it won't necessarily fry the bus. It might but it might not. Especially if its not an integrated graphics card (although since its a laptop it probably is. Trust me man, I am a computer science major.

If the video card is ruined though you won't see shit. If the problem is just a dim screen and upping the brightness doesn't help it could be a motherboard problem. If using an external monitor doesn't work either its possible you have a bad video driver. Try updating that. If all else fails just reinstall the OS and start from scratch. That'll let you know if its a hardware or software problem.

haha just kidding, i have a 17 inch monitor you can have if that will be any use to you
