Scooters - lame or helpful?

Right - I want to know if messing about on a scooter at the skatepark is something that will compliment park skiing. Not talking about anything insane, just want to have something else to do when I can't get out on my skis.

Advice, please.

Can see what you mean. Just want to muck about easily on mini-ramps and stuff. Wouldn't it take me too long and too many injuries to learn to skate well.

this summer i was bored so i bought a skateboard and just started cruising the pipe all the time. if you put in the time you'll pick it up pretty quick, although injuries are an issue. i didnt get anything too bad, but i sprained both wrists and both ankles, popped out my shoulder, got a concussion, and messed up my hip pretty bad for a couple weeks. however, probably my favorite thing about skating was that i learned to suck it up when i hurt myself and keep on trying, which totally applies to skiing park as well.

Scootering can be really fun because there is a reallly fast learning curve and it's fairly cheap.

That being said, learn park etiquette and don't be a cunt waffle.

Agreed about etiquette etc, but that is the same in any sport.

I understand the whole foot position thing, but isn't scootering still more forward facing than, say, skateboarding?

HAHAHA

I worked at Rye Airfield and we sold more scooter shit than scooter companies could resupply us with. That being said, the cheapest scooter was 100$ and that was the most simple scooter you could get. A custom built scooter could push $1,000 if we used all the most expensive parts, and most scooters I sold averaged between $350-$400.

a single wheel with bearings can cost you like 50 bones.

What the fuck people!??

Scootering is by far the lamest of all "extreme" sports ever. Its just skating for pussies.

How can you even consider not picking up the sickest of all extreme sports (skateboarding) instead of scootering.

watch the edit I posted and tell me Kyle doesn't have any skill, sure scootering seems dumb but floating backflips and 7s is pretty cool no matter what your riding on

Your buddy has the skill to do tricks on a scooter, but it takes absolutely zero skill to learn to ride a scooter (which is one of the things that negates any coolness that scooter tricks may gain). This is completely different to skating/skiing, both of which one must learn to ride before throwing tricks. But all said and done, surfing is way harder to learn and will be way better for your balance.

I do agree it takes zero skill to ride a scooter, but does that make the tricks less impressive? I don't know scooter trick names, but the second to last trick he does where he spins a 3 flips the scooter while tail whipping is pretty damn impressive, and is say on par difficulty wise with most skateboarding tricks

For me, it does make it less impressive. For instance, if I had never tried skating or scootering, and spent a day at the skate park, I think by the end of the first day I would be able to do a really shitty ollie on the skateboard. However, if I got my balls together, I think I would be able to backflip on the scooter or at least 360. It seems like the learning curve/progression for tricks on a scooter is much faster.

I'm sorry but scooters have no place in skateparks. Kids on scooters is everything thats wrong with rye airfield.

this is the only way you can help yourself

I wouldn't agree with "on par" first of all, once you can kick your scooter around its just a game of who can spin the most tailwhips before landing/slicing someones head off.

The reason scootering is so popular is because there is no risk factor. With basic scootering you can just let go of your scooter and your fine. that is NOT the case with a skateboard, blades, or a bike.

double post dont care.

I agree, but tell that to beau (general manager) and he will have a field day lecturing you about how much $ is in the scooter industry. Scootering believe it or not has kept Rye alive the past couple years.

No scootering is just stupid. It is physically impossible to have style while scootering. Its dumb and I cant believe that its actually becoming something.

Watch this and tell me scootering is cooler

Dont care, scootering is still incredibly lame.

No matter what it will be a joke in the extreme sports world. I have a buddy who used to strap on snowblades and go throw bio 9s slide every rail in the park and do some crazy shit and it was still a joke to him and everyone else no matter how sick the stuff he was throwing was.

I completely agree that if you spend a single day with each you'll be all around better on a scooter, but you crazy to think you can backflip a scooter after your first day.....

and btw I havn't ever scootered and don't plan to, I just think its like roller blading, kinda lame but the tricks are still sick

I wish I could multi quote.

Do you know how technically difficult spinning a 360 flip on a skateboard never mind catching that while jumping over sets?

Spinning a scooter around on a fixed axis is absolutely nothing like using your feet to spin a board on a totally free floating axis.

Not even comparable by any standards.

I never said it was a cool sport, I'm just saying certain tricks people do deserve some recognition, no matter how lame some of them look they still require a shit load of skill/balls

yes I realize how hard a 360 is on skateboard because I can land oneI already said I don't scooter, I just made that video but I have no association to scootering

Yah skill and balls maybe but technically its not even close to the skill that it takes to be a good skateboarder.

I went through the scootering phase. It fucking sucked, I made a bunch of friends who I really didn't want to meet. Do not ever scooter if you ever want to get laid, I'm saying this from experience.

From what I have seen saying there's no risk factor is just false. A fast moving scooter coming around from a tailwhip can smack you in the shins, landing with the wheel crooked can send you flying over the handle bars, landing slightly off when landing switch can fuck you up in many different ways, and that's just what I witnessed in one day at Rye. I'm not going to compare it to biking blading or skating (kicking out fucking sucks) but to say there's zero risk is ridiculous

I think that once you purchase your first scooter the keys to your chastity belt are thrown the fuck away.

" i didnt get anything too bad, but i sprained both wrists and both ankles, popped out my shoulder, got a concussion, and messed up my hip pretty bad for a couple weeks." ....

This.

I tell girls I ride bmx and they fucking love it. Doubt that would happen if you go to a girl and be like "Yeah... I do extreme scootering"
