Schools turning into jails?

So I will give you the story of my schools administration this year.

First with some background: Our high school has always been fairly strict with a closed campus and strictish rules, but this years new administration changed it all.

First off they decided to throw out our schools late start days, we used to get to come to school at 11:00 on Fridays, and everyone loved it. This year they changed it so that every day goes from 8:30 - 3:45. Its an obvious want for more money on the admin's side with no consideration from the students or parents.

Next thing they did was announce that they were building a fence around the school. There was a chain link fence around the school, and they are now making it one of those metal bar fences with spikes on the top facing outwards... They didn't really give a reason for this. We all assumed that it was because they were afraid of outside intruders coming onto the school. Apparently they don't understand that a stranger could just walk in the front, which is always open during the day, or simply CLIMB THE FENCE. A big waste of the money that the students had to go to school more to pay for.

Next they announced that students would not be allowed to go out to their cars during the day to get things. Once you are on campus, you cant even go out to your car. So if you forgot a project in your car and realize it after first period, you actually have to call your parents and ask them to call the front office and say its okay for you to go and get it.

Later in the year they announced that all free periods next year (which are used by students usually to chill out and talk to friends since we cant leave) will be mandatory study halls supervised by teachers.

Something i found very funny was that one of our assistant principles found out that our school soccer club, which i am a part of, was having a party over the weekend. He "heard" that there was going to be illegal substances there (it was at one of my friends house with his parents there). Then told us "this party is not happening, and if I hear that it did, any student who participated will be suspended". Lol at threatining to suspend off of something he "heard".

The grand finale was today, the last day for the seniors notorious for senior pranks. Usually the admin will just make an announcement telling them to stop it or else, but they really didn't care and realized that it was a tradition and nothing they were doing was harmful. THIS year, the admin agreed to let the seniors onto the plaza at 12 midnight last night to draw in chalk on the plaza for some fun. When the seniors got on campus they started drawing "inappropriate images" with the calk. From what i heard, they were writing "jail" and "good luck with [principle] next year". The admin got offended understandably then proceeded to kick everyone out of the school and power wash the whole sidewalk... Okay, this is fine a guess, but then when the seniors came to school and were angry that they were deprived of their original senior prank, they came to school with the plan of a water fight during lunch (oh by the way, no one was allowed inside of the cafeteria because they were afraid a food fight would happen, even though it was close to 100 degrees outside). They had their water fight during the first of two lunches with water bottles and a few water guns on the plaza during lunch and it was completely harmless. Also a few people wrote with window paint on the bathroom mirrors "2013".

Here's where the funny part starts. I was in class as the water fight was happening, and we weren't aware of it until after class. During chem, which was the class that i was in, we were basically just hanging out because we had already taken the final for the class, and had a sub. So an administrator comes into our class, quiets us down, and tells us that for the rest of the day, we were not allowed to leave the classroom that we were in, not for water, bathrooms, or anything. Also during the passing periods teachers were guarding the bathrooms, only allowing in one person at a time, and they had to write down the name of each person who went in and at what time. This basically resulted in many kids being late for class because they had to wait in line for the bathroom and then didn't have time to get to class. Then the admin had the nerve to come on the announcements and tell students that just because of all of the insanity of the day, there was no excuse to not be to class on time.

To finish the day we walked out of the fenced in school with cops standing at every exit monitoring. I heard that some of the people in the water fight even got arrested and were being threatened of being charged with destruction of property and vandalism.

tldr:

My school is becoming more and more strict with new rules and a fence that are hurting the students. they take small acts way to seriously.

anything like this happening at your school?

Boo-fucking-hoo. Stop being a bitch. Every day for us is 8:00 to 2:51, no matter what day of the week.

we go to school every day 7:30 to 2:10

we don't have an open campus, no leaving (people do it anyway and risk a saturday detention, but you ahve to be stupid to get caught).

technically we need passes to go to our cars to get something otherwise no leaving.

Theres a cop that drives around the parking lot and hangs inside the school building to catch people trying to leave or doing anything illegal in general.

So yah don't even try to complain about that stuff. It's really not that out of the ordinary. The rest is fucked tho.

double post, but also, any underclassmen free's are teacher supervised study halls. Upper classman can do whatever they want as long as its inside the school building.

i actually read all that, and that is seriously fucked.

im graduated, but if i were still in school, i would start some sort of committee/petition, write in the newspaper about it, and try to make some sort of interventions.

good luck with that

I continued to read until the end because I was waiting you to mention some real problems.

all of that sounds like a pretty damn normal high school to me... at least that's exactly how mine is. Schools are this way because high schoolers are pussies.

Our school system is incredibly flawed and one of the worst in the world considering the amount of money we put into it.

Somebody tell me why I have to be at school for 7 hours a day but when I miss a day it takes me about 45 minutes to make up what I missed.

Biggest waste of time there is.

But yeah, my school principals creep on groups of people and hear in on conversations. Its really lame. And they used to creep kids instagrams and facebooks for "questionable activity".

I start school at 7:00 in the morning and don't get home till 3:00. They make us have to get passes to our classes or to go to a different teacher for studyhall. They said I can't use my laptop for no stupid reason during an hour we are allowed to use our own devices. We can't go to our cars for anything. They have cameras monitoring every inch of every hallway. Not quiet as bad as yours. That sucks. SCHOOL SUCKS

Thats unbelievably fucked. If im a parent one day I am not dealing with thi BS high schools do. High schools are on total power moves for the most part. Its absurd that they have this power over kids.

My high school wasn't as bad as yours when I was there, and my sister tells me it still is pretty bad but that sounds wayyyyy over teh top. The fence thing was really fucked. If I were you I would just suck it up for now nothing you can do.

Or get a huge group of parents and attend town meetings, etc, write in newspapers do whatever it takes to open this tot he public

Aren't drug tests good enough? Like fuck, I don't want some fucking admin checking my facebook. Thats fucking wack as fuck.

My school went through a similar sort of thing. Thankfully most of the tightening up of the rules happened after I left

i live in a rural area of CNY and attend a small school. no assigned cop anywhere on school grounds, you can go to your car whenever as long as you take the pass from the nurse, seniors can go early and come late to school if they have study halls then, and also go to the parking lot for lunch. my school is restricting is some of its policies but its not every school thats as bad as OPs.

Damn, my school is rediculously relaxed. Open campus, if you show up to a class at all (even 45mins late to a 55 min class) you are counted as present but late, there is no penalty for being late, and there isn't even really a penalty for unexcused absences. It's also pretty high on schools in the country.

I feel like the schools that go crazy with regulations are trying in a completely wrong way to make up for sub par academics. Hopefully somebody important will realize that soon.

Shit, this made me realize how laid back my school is haha

Feel bad for you op, get that shit out to the media, could do some good

Wow that really sucks, my school is honestly nothing like that. We have open campus for everyone all day, the admins are very chill, and we can actually have free periods, except for freshman having study halls instead.

That really sucks. Next year my school is changing senior release from any hour of the day to only being able to have it 7th hour. Also because of te shootings we have to get buzzed in if we are there after 830.

Damn dude, head up, that does sound like prison though, I can't believe your school would actually put all of those rules into place with any real sense of logic involved

Man my school sucks the worst. It's an open campus for everyone, the teachers/administrators don't really care if you skip, you can get caught selling mdma and not get a criminal record, everyone is allowed spares if they want them, we're allowed to leave with our cars at any given point in the day, and we're allowed to smoke on campus.

Life sucks at my school.

My school has had 3 bomb threats. So we can't even go to the bathroom during class. We also have two security guards and a cop that patrol.

Hey man my school had a big fence, and one day i wanted to go off campus to get a big gulp. fuckin next thing i know I'm lost in an alley with a needle of down in my arm and jesus told me that i had dropped out of school. Now i just live in a park in a tree and throw my feces at underaged girls. you're lucky.

I also tagged my school to the point where you have to sigh in and out every time you go to the bathroom, even during lunch

Stop being a bitch. It sounds pretty much like my highschool.

Its understandable not wanting kids to go to their cars during the schoolday.

And the last part of your story, the part where people were late to class when you were told you wernt allowed to leave the class the rest of the day doesn't make sense or I didnt read it correctly.

My highschool was actually super chill. Open campus, we could leave to go to lunch downtown and our dean of students goes to multiple Phish shows.

My school doesn't give a fuck. I burn in the parking lot all the time during frees and I only have 2 classes now for senior spring

Everyone at my school always complains how strict the rules are, but compared to your schools its like anarchy. The only problem is our vice principal always getting in everyones bizz, an example: he stopped my friend the other day who was carrying some chai tea in her water bottle, asked if it was milk mixed with vodka.....

This thread makes me so glad I go to a private school that lets everyone do what they want. Seniors can leave and go anywhere when the dont have class and all the deans and teachers are super chill. I'm glad I left public school when I did.

Our school is pretty laid back besides our Dean. Our last day was today, and he came on the announcements five teams (within 2 hours) to tell us that cops are patrolling the campus 24/7 (for senior pranks). Normally, everyone would assume it's bullshit (and it would be), but it turns out to be true. This is after some other seniors locked the gates to the parking lot yesterday. It was absolutely hilarious and really well done, moms couldn't drop their kids off, teachers were 25 minutes late, etc.

Anyways, senior prank is tonight and we are planning on TP-ing the whole school and I guess some kid has keys to the school so were going to put crickets everywhere. The cops will obviously present a problem but it should be fun regardless!

This would actually be so easy to pull off at my school, there are 3 paved access points via gates to the school two of which go over a creek.
