Save a life?

There is a 24 year old mother of a three year old boy in Vancouver, 5.5 hours from me, who is on stage 5 kidney failure. She has been on dialysis 3 times a week for two years. Two people have gotten tested and weren't the right blood type. She needs a donor with O+ blood to donate in order to stay alive. I know from donating blood that I'm O+...I don't know what to do. I don't know what happens to me after with skiing and mountain biking, if those are too dangerous with one kidney, but if I don't, and she doesn't get another donor, I know the end game. Please help. I dont know enough about this subject to make a good decision. I don't know anyone this has happened to.

My dad only has one. You should be fine.

I mean it sounds like you want to do it so just do it.

You should be fine. Ask a doctor if you have any questions regarding things.

Living with 1 kidney is easier than living with the guilt of knowing you could have saved someone but didn't.

nah fuck her and her 3 kids dude. live your life with your 2 kidneys. or do what you already want to do and give us an update in a month. either way.

you seem like a wonderful human being

If you donate your kidney it will be the best thing an NSer has done this month. It would be totally epic of you and an amazing story for the rest of your (and her) life. Do it.

Wait, do kidney host and donor have to have matching blood types or is this some misnomer for HLA/MHC? Any RBC's you get that aren't yours are going to be IgM tagged and killed with complement but that's not a problem really... How does OP know he's somewhat of an HLA/MHC match?

yeah, donating an organ isn't as simple as donating blood. more things need to match up

I'm confused by OP. You don't need to be matching ABO or Rh with someone to donate an organ, the very small amount of blood and immune cells that comes with a host kidney are going to be killed by the immune system of the person receiving the kidney and that's the end of that. Plus with how good immunosurpressive drugs are these days, matching HLA isn't too big of a deal plus unless you have an identical twin it's really hard to find a decent match anyway.

You don't have to try to add more weird pressure.

Obviously op is already feeling it.

I suggest talking to a doctor about living with one kidney. But from my very basic understanding you should avoid contact sports. Skiing and mountain biking should be fine.

A buddy of mine in Banff only has one kidney. Lost it after a motorbike accident, when a dump truck cut him off in Montana. He skis and bikes more than anybody else I know.

He can't drink much though. But that's not a bad thing.

OP, get checked to see if you're a tissue match for her.

If a stranger could help your mom, wouldn't you want them to?

Oh, and I'm on the bone marrow registry.

I talked to my friend in med school. He says that kidneys transplanted only last around 13 years and she could have the same issue later on, and I'll have no backup. To someone else that posted, you don't need to be a matching blood type but it helps a lot. Basically what he told me was that a kidney is dangerous for me to give up, and he says a better candidate would be a 40 year old accountant or something. That being said I will still be willing to do it if it's her only shot. I am also on the bone marrow registry.

Sadly, there's also the issue of her body rejecting the kidney too. If you were going to be a donor, you'd have to lead a very healthy lifestyle, i.e. no drinking, smoking, etc. Good on you for considering it!
