Santa Fe Skiing??

Hey Santa Fe locals!

Im moving to

Im moving to the greater Santa Fe area and am wondering where to get a pass at? I'm a native VT skier and am most interested in hitting cliffs, natural air, and good freeride terrain- love a good park too. I'm gonna be about 30 mins south of Santa Fe so Taos looks like a 2 hour drive. I'd prefer something closer unless its really the place to go. Don't need to ski the largest resort as long as it has a lot of big natural air and some steep, tech lines ;)

Let me know where its at!

If you got/know of vids of the local mountains link em!

Idk where it is but I think there’s also some place called angel fire don’t know anything about it other than it’s in NM and it’s name is angel fire

A simple google search will show you that it is even further east from santa fe than taos.

Ayyyyy !!!

I live in Santa Fe.

Ski Santa gets old fast, trust me. It's only good on a powder day. Are you moving to eldorado? You have to ski Taos because it's insane. I'm on the freeride team at Taos, and the drive gets better as you do it more. Ski Santa Fe doesn't even have a park (if they do it's one rail usually). Taos has a large park and it can be super fun. They usually will have 3 big jumps and tons of rails/boxes/quarterpipe set up.

But where Taos really shines is in its big mountain terrain. Super steep plus fun cliffs. You will not find "big natural air and some steep, tech lines" at Santa Fe. But if it dumps and we get a snow day all my friends and I will go to Santa Fe.

Santa Fe only has flat landings and the lifts are so slow. Taos actually gets such good snow sometimes and there are usually super small lines.

Here is a 3 from a powder day before spring break off of a hit in Taos.

thanks for your input! was looking at some 4* qualifier vids and does look like Taos is nice. Taos vs ski Santa Fe is mainly what I was wondering because I can't seem to find any videos of ski Santa Fe. any other mountains comparable to Taos in the area?

Family lives in Santa Fe and honestly fuck Ski Santa Fe. The mountain is alright but they are the worst operation and honestly the attitude up there is just lame. Homie is right there is like one zone I can think of that is somewhat rowdy but most of the mountain is just meh. Taos was on my list this year cause this is the second season they’ve lived there but Covid has put a hold on that. Everyone unequivocally says Taos is way worth the extra drive. Ripper at my local used to work at Taos and all he does is rave about it on the chair rides...

Dude...there is nothing remotely like Taos in the state of NM. It’s fucking sick. It competes with some of the best areas in the country imo.

You’ve got to ski there.

how relatable this is for me is cringey

Another NM skier here, and I agree with what's been said. Taos is world class, mind-blowing terrain and locals who rip. Worth the drive without a doubt.

Welcome to the 505!!!

nothing else compares to taos.

I hate new mexico so much tho I'm not gonna lie.

The answer you are looking for is SIPAPU

1 hour 20 min away. Much smaller than Taos, but they still have some great, thrilling terrain. Real lovey dovey local vibes there. Bonus, the season passes are super cheap.

Taos has good terrain for jumping off of rocks. Here is one of the venues from the FWQ comp a few years back. There is no shortage of this sort of terrain.

I mean angel fire is THE place to go if you must come to NM from out of state...

Angel Fire gets the Texas tourist rap, but I think it can be pretty gnar.

The steep terrain is wild when it's gone all low-tide rashy Sangre de Cristo cement.

Yeah it’s not bad. I have a soft spot for pretty much anywhere in the state but let’s just say the Texans can have angel fire if they leave places like sipapu, pajarito, and Taos to the rest of us.

Sidenote: have you skied Hesperus in CO?

Hesperus is the soul of skiing! I love that place‘s vibe! Like nothing cooler than going to a little resort with a crappy double chair and everyone having grins from ear to ear.

The place is also super inclusive! It reminds me of Pete‘s from TC.

Love me some Sipa!! Gonna have to keep my eyes out for Newschoolers up there next season

Man you should see them at Wolf Creek! Gnarliest mountain ever, and they're pizza-ing down the greens in jeans. They're aight tho lol.

Saw this truck once in the Sipapu parking lot:

Hesperus is the last resort I haven't skied in Colorado! Every time I try to ski it, plans change. It's like a white whale. Really thought I was gonna get it this year in March, but no dice. Next year!

I'll probably be out next season. There's a little snowskating scene out there, and I'm pretty tight with a few of them. Usually I go out to NM a couple times a year.

Homegirl living in Taos I usually stay and ride with was pregnant and not having any house guests, so didn't make it this season. I'll be out in Albuquerque in like 2 weeks tho for Ditch Slap.

Nice! Yeah I’ve seen some homies ripping it on the snow skates up there. Good luck at ditch slap!! Looks like a rad competition

You’ll see my little bro at ditch slap. He works at Santa Fe skate school and hangs around those guys. I was in Durango late December and it wasn’t open yet. I have a pass and all I was super bummed. NS edit at a small NM/CO hill would be sick.

Woo hoo! Glad you saw them.

The New Mexico snowskate crew out there fucking rips.

When they're at Sipapu, they represent as like model snowskater citizens super wholesome Santa Claus family fun gurus.

When they go out to Taos, they're ultra-locals trying to hike Kachina Peak or skate the steepest ridge lines possible.

Steeps are very challenging on a snowskate because as it gets steeper, the skate falls down the mountain away from your feet.

That's what they get off on out there though, cuz it's so next level quadruple diamond to them.

Super gnarly but super nice. If you see them, say hi for me.

Threw up my little edit from riding the arroyos during balloon fiesta ^^^

Sipapu has way better disc golf than skiing. Are you trolling? I’ve only been there early season on their version of the white ribbon of death.

edit: wait...is sipapu actually sick?

It doesn't have Taos-level gnar, but yeah Sipapu is pretty sick. Some real nice tree skiing up top and fresh snow doesn't get tracked out too quick after a storm. Also the vibes are top-notch. Definitely would recommend. The disc golf is super rad in the summer too.

Awesome! I haven’t been there in years and really just when it was pre-season. I’ll have to check it out ?

Hesperus is funky. Skied there at night when it was colder than shit. Had a blast. Such a cool vibe

I hope it works out! We definitely have no shortage of sun. If you wind up here send me a pm and I can show you around Taos.

I hope this works out man.

You can ski with all my friends if you come we are all 15/16 so I think it would be perfect.

I have lots of friends that live in ABQ and make the trip up to Taos every weekend.

Sweet similar ages. he’s applied to one already didn’t get it but he heard another spot might open up soon and he’s definitely applying to it.

Taos is the best mountain in North America. Unless you are a baby and only like skiing pow then I guess stay at the bird or jhole and enjoy lift lines out your butt. The terrain there is legitimately out of control sweet.
