Sand Skiing

Has anyone been sand skiing before? is it fun and does it require ski modifications? Summer fever has hit hard and there are some sand dunes near my town that i was thinking of trying out. Any thoughts?

there was a traveling circus episode where they tried it and determined that a layer of formica on the bottom of your ski works the best. regardless of what you do though, it will completely trash your skis.

Sand would most likely fuck up your bindings, so I would use beater skis. Snow will melt and flow out, sand will not.

I made a thread about this last summer while I was thinking about skiing the sleeping bear dunes. We concluded that the easiest best way is to spray em with Pam. I'm doing it next weekend so I will let you know how it goes

Would this work on dunes at a beach? Like small dunes? Looks pretty fun I want to try this out on Cape Cod in August.

I did the sand boarding in that episode and I can say that you need a pretty steep hill, a lot of wax, and you dont have much control. you have to rub wax on the base everytime and its still not as slippery as snow. its kind of like riding sticky hot pow. but if youre in need its not a bad way to spend a day.

also you will get sand everywhere.

Yeah but when Will tried that out, the bottom came right off. When they were dropping off mini sand cliffs and stuff they didn't have any formica on the bottom. It was clear. Did they use sandboarding wax or was the hill steep enough or what?

If you can, try to go up around the east coast of Lake Michigan. The farther North you go, typically the bigger dunes you get.

I've done it in Great Sand Dunes National Park in CO. It's fun for shits and giggles, but yes it will absolutely trash your equipment so bring your garbage skis.
