Hey guys!

I jumped ship to GH3 recently and finally got the chance to do some filming up on the hill. I wanted to take a different approach to this edit and keep it faster pace/mess around fun feel. Let me know what you think!

Thanks guys,

Matt

Colors were real nice, good editing, good song. Overall really sick.

How do you like the GH3 compared to the 5D? I recall you posting an edit recently you made with it, just wondering how they stack up.

I actually have never used a 5D. Before this the GH3 I was filming with a 60D.

Obviously the quality, sharpness, and moire are much better than the 60D, but filming with the GH3 is a bit of a pain. Maybe there are some ways that I can figure out how to work with it faster, but the grip isn't very well shaped, it's slow and tedious to review clips, the button lay out is terrible, and the LCD is hard to pull out especially when your hands are cold.

Maybe I'll get used to it overtime, but I'm pleased with what it puts out so far.

Didn't work super well in my eyes, quite honestly, but that's just because I have really high expectations with you.

I really dug the colors and I'm a little envious when I see GH3 edits because they are so much sharper than Canon edit, so that was radical as well.

But I just felt like the glides weren't very smooth and the song didn't fit with me at all for the skiing. Some misplaced clips in there, too.

I still can't get over your intro to Play The Part, so that's one reason that I didn't think this vid lived up to what you can put out.

No doubt, thanks for being honest. Always appreciate it.

I would agree with you about all of it. This was my first time using the GH3 so I was really just looking to give it a whirl and make a little edit for fun. Usually I have more of a concept and plan going into things, but I really just wanted to stack some clips just really to see what the GH3 could do, thus all glide cam shots and no tripod/varying focal length. The shots weren't fantastic, but I felt obligated to put something out (edited the night that I filmed it) because I took up a lot of their time and wanted to show some GH3 footy.

Also it was very cold and I decided to wear mittens the whole time as I usually go with out a mitten on my left hand for max precision on the glide control.

I felt like the footage I had wasn't very creative and it was all the same so I didn't feel like I could really push the creative well-timed sort of edit-style like Play The Part or Be Alright. It was more run-and-gun/skateboard style so I felt like the quick cuts over a sort of elevator-style music might work. Just kinda shows that none of us were taking our selves too seriously filming/tricking wise.

Thanks for the critique Gavin. Always appreciate the honesty and specificity.

I will be skiing in Mammoth soon and will hopefully be working on some more edits that I will put more thought into (:

That's interesting that you film without your guide hand having a mitten. I usually wear gloves so I have all of my fingers to use, but I've never tried doing it without them, maybe I'll give that a go soon.

And I totally know what you mean when you just wanted to produce something quick and fun. I mean it wasn't a bad edit by regular standards, but just lesser than what you can usually achieve.

Thanks for being a good "critiquee", to many people are reactionary to criticism.

I'm super excited to see what you come up with!

Yeah, since I knew it wasn't going to be a "banger" production-wise, I wasn't willing to put my hand through the pain hah. You should try it some time. No wiggle room at all. Just makes you become one with the glide (: You can be as light or as firm as you need to be with precise control.

Likewise!
