Saga or first drop?

Hey NS,

I'm really liking the look of what both these companies have done for this upcoming season's outerwear. My problem is not deciding what "look" I like more, but who will offer me better quality. First drop is a little more expensive, but they offer things that Saga does not have like zip off sleeves. I'm really not sure which brand should I choose? Persuade me....

i may regret this, but i have repeatedly been super disappointed with saga's customer service..but lesh has got his service on lock. emails are answered super quickly

well, zip off sleeves has mostly to do with "looks" so it shouldn't be a factor.

Its a tough choice cause first drop has supposedly (I say supposedly because no one has the new first drop) improved their quality a lot this year.

But saga has also stepped it up with the 20K 3L.

I'm also concerned about how warm it will be because I ski in the north-east so it can be really cold. Sometimes -30 Celsius or -86 Fahrenheit in January February .

neither jacket is going to be able to handle temps that low without lots of layering but first drop is insulated and should be a little warmer.

Your so wrong.... 100 Fahrenheit is about 38 Celsius.

Go to a conversion site and put in 30 degrees Celsius and see what in Fahrenheit.

For anybody wants to know where my mountain is it is in Quebec about an hour and a half north of Montreal. Not really sure why, but it gets really cold. We shut lifts because of the cold so people don't get frostbite.

well i would go first drop because they are insulated and saga is not, yet the size jump is fucking retarded.5 inches in between xl and xlt. (37-42")

Isn't it the worst when you try to correct someone but come off looking like a complete ass?

-30 degrees Celsius does equal -22 degrees Fahrenheit

Why don't YOU type in -30 degrees Celsius into a converter and see that it does equal -22 degrees Fahrenheit. Putting in 30 is not the same as putting in -30 dumbass

this is basically how it goes between fd and saga. fd will win the look (vest, bibs, different colourways) but saga will win with technicality (i honestly dont know if thats a word) with 3L and the fact that it is a shell makes it much more versitile.

Sum's it up pretty well^^ although look is still all up to opinion, and in my opinion, first drop looks cooler. I would also give the edge to first drops customer service.

i honestly thing that first drop's zippered sleeves are not going to turn out as awesome as everyone thinks they will, either the zippers are not going to be waterproof enough, or they are going to be really stiff, because thats how most legitimately waterproofed zippers are, and thats not going to be very comfortable to have against your underarms.

first drop definitely looks sick, and will function well (minus maybe the sleeve zippers), but i think the looks and specs of saga is definitely superior

Good point +k. You kinda made me think that it is only the second year of production for First Drop and it's very hard to get it right the first time.

i am by no means saying that first drop is bad, only that they are doing something new and may not have worked out all the kinks and problems as there may be some unforeseen issues.

the concept is sick, the look is sick, i just feel like it may not perform as good as it does in theory.

that frickin t-blant wind is a bitch. no lie, it gets as cold as -40degrees celcius with the wind. and they shut down lifts and stuff. you need insulated gear and a ton of layers to stay warm. I'd say first drop cus its insulated for the really cold days, then when it warms up rock a hoodie with the vest to keep your core warm. saga is just a shell.

no where have i ever read that FD uses insulation like prima loft....... it says medium weight liner, which saga, LDC and FD seem to use and like. quit spreading false information.

Idk if anyone else thought the same way I did but when I saw one of the vests earlier this summer I remember thinking it looked cheap. And don't say I'm hating on FD because I didn't know what brand it was at the time. FD has amasing customer service and I'm probably gunna get some of their stuff soon(stuff like hoodies and that face shield)

k, i thought it was insulated. all i was trying to say is that tremblant is freezing for 90% of the winter, so he should get a jacket that's going to keep him warm.

companies websites are really good for gathering some information. when they spend money on a feature, they are going to write about it.

from what i found with ldc saga and trew, that ldc had the warmest gear, because it had poor breathability. its warm because it doesn't breathe and the fabric is thick. when i cut open the liner its like the fabric is coated in a rubberish substance and no insulation. (minus the fleece in random spots which all of the companies do for comfort)

lethal stuff this year is supposed to be 20k/20k and it was 10k/10k last year which really isnt that bad (same as first drop). thicker material is nice for me, doesnt rip as easily on trees and other things that might catch while skiing

I ski a tremblant also and it does get really cold sometimes.. the coldest ive skiied was -52 C at the summit a 8:15 in the morning... it was crazy and i did two runs all day and half of the chairs were closed... but i dont care about a jacket's material, insulation, warmth or waterproofing cuz i dont ski in rain.. there isnt alot of snow here and when its cold i rather invest in some really good undergarments... so to me price and look is the most important and i think fd looks 100X better than saga

Thats exactly what I thought of the air raid bibs before I returned them. They felt like rubber and the liners swished when I walked. haha

Why is Lethal Descent never included in these arguments? I think they're suits look dope, and the tech seems pretty good too this year.

Honestly buy first drop gear, it's wayyyyyyy higher quality then saga. Saga may look cooler in my opinion but it's far better to have gear that will last a long time.

have you worn/tried on/tested the new 2011 saga and fd lines? no. so you cant make judgements on which is better than the other until you have tested them both.

Wow lots of replies... Really I don't care for waterproofing because I never ski in the rain and the snow is never really wet. I care more about have seams that the wind will not just blow right through and a bit of insulation.

ya waterproofin is useless at t-blant and you could always wear polar insulation on cold days if your jacket is thin
