Safety gear - thoughts?

Hey all,

This is my first thread so go easy - I just have a couple of questions regarding safety gear. What are your accumulative thoughts on safety gear in the park? What should be essential and what is overkill? I wouldn't ski without a helmet (let alone ski park without one), but how about a back protector or impact shorts? I've landed my first few inverts and I'm starting to think a back protector could be a good idea - I've seen varying designs around though, which would be best and why? Keeping in mind things like price, comfort, etc. Would padded shorts also be worth investing in? If so, any recommendations?

Are there any other products that have saved your bacon or increased your comfort when skiing?

Does anyone ski with a knee brace, is it worth it?

On a side note, (and one final question, I realise I've asked a few), I'm considering a low light lens (Dragon APX goggles), am I better off getting a yellow or clear lens (think total whiteout, Australian conditions)?

Cheers guys

I don't have experience with padding, so I'm not going to comment on it and end up giving the wrong advice. But one thing that is often overlooked for saftety is keeping in good shape. Especially off season, keep working out to keep your muscles top notch. Strong muscles can help to keep your joints in place. Also, if you get injured, make sure your recover properly before going big again. I've been thinking about some padding myself, so would like to hear what others so too. Hope that helps!

its all preference and what makes your feel more comfortable for me a helmet and a gumsheild is all i need to feel comfortable. but if you want to wear back protectors (alot of people do) just make sure you try some on like other ski stuff and find what one is comfortably for you

If you don't wear a helmet then you're a silly goose, Nova Scotia (Where I live) just made it mandatory to where a helmet at all times. Which I think is just splendid.

I typically wear a helmet, mouthguard (when jumping) impact/ padded shorts and a spine pad. I have no issues with discomfort, just try some spine pads on before buying one

I rarely wear a helmet but i do wear wrist guards (multiple broken wrists from skateboarding) and i will be investing in some impact shorts for sure. I have the most brusied ass at the moment and at the end of this trip, shorts are at the top of the shopping list.

I like the point the first poster brought up. The regular splits stretches I was doing in tumbling class basically eliminated all those little groin tweak injuries I used to get. And the back flexibility helped as well.

As far as impact protection goes, I use a helmet all the time and a mouth guard nearly all the time. Since I still have braces, I have to use a special one that isn't molded, but I'm gonna invest when my teeth are straight.

I also have braces and was sondering what kind of mouth guard you have. and what kind of mouth guard do you recomend, also could i just go get one that people use for like football or do i have to go to a special store.

Also this is my first year of park, should i invest in some padded shorts?
