H HeathR Active member Dec 20, 2009 #4 is it a flat bar or round bar? Round bars rust comes of pretty easy by just sliding it.
C.Wood Active member Dec 21, 2009 #5 i did this to one of mine that was sitting in a field for like 4 years i took a right angle grinder with a sanding disk so a sander would work as well sanded the top of the whole thing till the rust was gone i then took a candle and melted it onto the rail and like used a credit card to smooth the wax out and make it even and i haven't had a problem since

stickerman Active member Dec 22, 2009 #7 exactly like cwood said. try sliding it or painting it. mine is also steel and mine rusts over the summer. use a sander or a grinder with a sanding wheel and the rust will be gone.
