Runners of NS/Official Running Thread/Running Questions

You buy running shoes like you buy ski boots. you have to get your foot fitted for them. Thats if you are getting over 20 miles a week. I ran about 45 miles a week for track and if you are deciding to getting really into Id HIGHLY recommend getting your foot fitted for a running shoe.

yo spruit, id do a half before a full marathon. you want a 13 mile pace to be round 9 15 or lower for your age, before you go on to training for a full.

I can attest to this from a non-professional standpoint. I workout 4 days a week, all crossfit, and I bought the vibram fivefingers KSO. They're really comfortable and I like them so much more than wearing a regular sneaker to work out in. I decided I wanted to start running, so I started off with an easy 3 mile jog with my fivefingers. It was mainly on the road, so there wasn't the forgiveness of XC trails. I'm so used to having the padding and support of regular sneakers that I land heel first. Landing heel first with vibrams is incredibly painful after a couple miles, and it hurt to walk the next day. Fortunately, I went out and bought some running shoes before I ran next.

I am following a training program through Nike. It's based on my running skill level and spread out over 28 weeks. It consists of one long run a week, a few medium runs, and a short one. I also take a couple rest days to let my body recover, especially after the long run. I am not in any hurry to do a marathon, I am just going as it tells me to and will find one to enter when I am ready.Sounds like barefoot is not the way to go, so I will have to check out a shoe store when I can, but the shoes I have now will work in the meantime.

No one has mentioned music, anyone have some good power songs?

update: calf sleeves are fucking legit.

i got them and used them for a full workout of squats and leg stuff, and then later that day cranked a 2.5 mile run wearing a weighted vest. Wore them the whole time, then slept with them on. my calves are fine today. can't believe it. highly recommend them - SKINS A400 compression sleeves

I had never run one before and checked out a few marathon programs that I googled. Ended up emulating one and kinda making my own which I'm real hyped on. allowed me to progress at the speed I wanted, I know it can be dangerous stackin miles quick but the ones I found felt dreadfully slow and I know my limits pretty well.

as far as music, it's been such a mixed bag for me. I'll run for a month with music then get sick of it and run a month without it. music can get annoying because there are often lulls in hyper music which can bum me out and the change in beats always fucks with my pace. plus sometimes its nice to just space out and cruise. If music does get old for you try running to audio books and/or comedians. I torrented this 80 comedian collection and it can be really nice when ur running an hour or more to just space and laugh ur ass off while running. sometimes freaks people out too when you break out laughing. and there are a million good books I've always wanted to read that you can finally listen while you run for a 1-2 hours a day.

I'm running a 25k on saturday. I thought my shoes were going to last through it, but I was running the other day and could feel the heel just not making it, so I had to get new shoes yesterday. I did 5 miles in them and will run today and tomorrow. Luckily they are very similar to my old shoe, so my feet felt great in them. I can feel the muscles in my leg reacting a little, but I think i'll be good for saturdayNike Vomero

running 3 miles with barefoot shoes on a first run is exactly what the barefoot shoes makers tell you not to do...

It's all about getting your body used to the middle foot strike.

first run with barefoot shoes shoulndt be longer then 5 minutes... htne two dayz later you might add another minute and so on.

there are padded shoes with some decent padding out there that are lighter then five fingers and are more friendly to those who are new to running.

Can someone please help? Recently when ever I even slightly log, my knees just kill me in pain. i dont know what it is. Thanks in advance

Since making this thread, I ran a 25k, kind of kept up with it for a while, then completely stopped running. I keep trying to get back into it, but I'm having trouble sticking with it and just getting more out of shape.

Probably has to do with being so busy, but how do you get motivated?

Bump because I have the same question.

And a new one, as soon as I roll over mile 2 (almost on the dot every time) my breathing gets ragged. I remember being told something about keeping my breath smooth a few years ago and I was wondering if there was any truth to this. When it gets ragged I don't feel like I'm struggling for air but I after my run I definitely cough and wheeze and what not.
