The younger kids should understand, people in the US prior to 9/11 didn’t know jack shit about Islam, the Middle East, history or global politics. In hindsight the way this war played out was the most massively predictable blunder in living memory, but it was an incredibly easy sell to the idiot public. It was terrifying how easy of a sell it was to the idiot public. I turned 18 in 2002 and a lot people thought the draft would be reinstated.
Ultimately it’s not really about politics, it’s about countless lives, how many of your classmates committed suicide after serving, how many came back from Afghanistan with PTSD or hooked on heroine they got while serving… trillions of dollars we borrowed that will never get paid back. No substantial improvements in the overall region or national security. People should pay attentIon this is why we don’t have money for healthcare and infrastructure.
Edit: the rule should be, if half the country throws a shit fit ahead of a lead up to a war vote- (ie the largest protests in history) then you shouldn’t do it. Even if it turns out you were right we need a consensus among the public for a war.
