Routers and networking with 2 routers?

right now i have an 8 port router connecting my laptop, my brothers computer and all kinds of shit in my house. now i'm really lazy, so i wanna get wireless, but it would cost much more to buy wireless cards for all the computers and xbox/ps2 shit. my friend just gave me his wireless router that he never got to work at his house, its a wireless access point or something, but it should work. i plugged my ethernet cord in my room to the WAN port, but no lights come on. i can't tell if i'm just stealing my neighbors shitty connection or if this thing is working. can i even do this without a crossover cord or how can i set this up?
 
does the wireless router have LAN ports aswell?

the wireless router is actually a "wireless access point router," if that makes a difference. it has an uplink jack, 4 ethernet jacks, and a WAN jack.
 
my understanding is that when you connect a router to another router you do need a crossover cable. though I could be wrong I really don't know much about routers.
 
need a straight through to go from router to router...and for the ps2 you can buy a wireless usb thing for like 20 bucks...but the xbox one is like 75 bucks it is a ripoff...the only thing that i have to say about wireless is that sometime it can be unrelieable i alwaus keep the cord lying around just in case it shits the bed
 
it if's reasonably new then the crossover cable shouldn't be a problem. Have you configured the wifi router and your computer? you should find a button on the wifi router and reset it then set the ssid of the wifi to something distinctive, then run the wireless network wizard on your computer and set your network as the primary network. there are all sorts of other setup options that you might need to do but you should google search your particular wifi router and find out how it should be set up.
 
connect your cable in your room to the "Uplink" port and go from there. You should do a reset on the unit and follow the basic instructions/setup wizard to build a new config that works for you.
 
your router is not going to grab a neighbors connection... a wireless card in your PC will grab a neighbors connections. you dont even need the wireless router in your house to do that. the wireless router is sending signals out for you to pick up. it does not go look for other connections, it will only recieve from a wireless card in a laptop/PC
 
i know my wireless router isn't going to pick up a connection, the wireless card in my laptop is. right now i'm taking my neighbors connection, i can tell because its status is very low and i'm sitting next to this router. plus i unplugged it. so if i just plug in the router to the wall, then plug in a regular ethernet cord already connected to my linksys router into the uplink port, i should have wireless internet throughout my "area."
 
Do you have the power cable plugged in? Without that the router isn't gonna be on and do anything. Since you said theres no lights turned on on the router thats the only thing I can think of.
 
not necessiarily gonna work just like that. if you haven't reset the router it will still have the settings that your friend had on it. if your friend knew anything about computers he will have set it up so that the wireless network is not visable and it will also require a key to gain access to the network. If you can steal your neighbours connection then he has probably set up his router like you are trying to set up yours, without a thought to security. you should also check the wireless network properties section. double click the wireless network icon in the system tray>properties>wireless networks. make sure that your neighbours network isn't at the top of the list, otherwise whenever you are in range of it, no matter what the signal strength, that is the network you will be connected to.
 
first of all, i know this shit is plugged in. haha. but when i do refresh my list of wireless connections availible (my whole street has wireless its just terrible connection to my house so its not worth taking), my router doesn't come up (i guess i'm looking for one with a strength better than extremely low). when i do plug in the router though, the lights that come on are power, link and diag in the WAN category. i'm going to try it again, but i might try to borrow a router that i knwo works (this one never worked for my buddy).
 
i just plugged the ethernet cord from my working router into the uplink port on the wireless in my room.the power light is on, the link and diag in the WAN section are on, the link/act, full/col and 100 lights are all on under the 4th port section. when i refresh my wireless network connection, all i see is my neighbors connection at low. thanks for the help by the way. do i need to do something internally with my laptop in order to pickup my signal?
 
it didn't work. i'm going to try to find another wireless router, one i know for a fact works, and if that doesn't work, i'll buy a crossover cable and see if thats the problem.
