Root Beer...?

Why is root beer called root beer? It's not like it is beer...

My only experience with this vile excuse for a drink was when I was 11 in the Toronto zoo. I'd only been in your beautiful country for about 2 days, and had never seen root beer before (we don't have it over here). We asked the guy in the cafe what it tasted like and he said 'Oh shoot, how do you describe root beer?' and it tasted like crap!!!!! Sorry to anyone who likes it but yuk! Stupid useless story I thought I would share with you all!

... Root Beer is amazing. If you get fountain root beer from A&W that's probably the best. I made some home-made root beer before and that was pretty good too. You just gotta find the right stuff. I'm guessing the name came from when Root Beer was originally made. They probably used some roots like Ginsing or some shit. Maybe we got Root Beer from Space Indians...

I'm guessing because it is a fromented & carbonated beverage like beer. There is ginger beer too.

Official reason:

Beer is a word with double meaning. Such is the word cabinet (something you store stuff in, or a group of people who advises the president). The other meaning 'beer' has is for a 'beverage made from roots'. Root beer is flavoured with sassparilla root. Same goes for ginger beer, flavoured with ginger root.

 
Ahhh... riiiight sasparilla, I totally forgot. Well, I guess that explains everything.
