Rodeo 540 Help/tips

So I feel like I have a solid base to start trying rodeos except when I do, the rotation does not feel smooth and natural it feels forced and like I’m not going to complete the rotation almost any time I do it. I can backflip, 540, and flat 3 but when I flat 3 I set it more flippy and grab Japan to tweak it out to be more flat. But when I do flatspins it seems more difficult to pull it to 5 than it does to just land at 3. I know there is a lot of different styles on how to rodeo 5 but I just want to be able to feel comfortable when setting the trick.

Flat 3 video (first attempts)

Yo I just learned rod 5 Saturday, same boat as you when I was trying it. I can't see the video right now sadly, but I assume that the jump may be kinda wonk, like not poppy enough, or you aren't looking over your shoulder enough and spotting your landing properly. Maybe start with just doing flat 3 and then do like a tokyo drift 1 when you land, itll help you get the feel of the extra 180.

You're just kinda doing a whackflip, but with some tweaks you could make it rodeo. Your main problem is that you're throwing it like a backflip but just twisting your shoulders. The spin is kind of an afterthought the way you're doing it.

You kinda need to swing your shoulders out to the side as you rotate. It's hard to describe. Instead of throwing a backflip and trying to force a twist into it, you should be rotating your shoulders almost so you're throwing a backflip sideways... kinda. I've heard it described as trying to punch a midget directly in front of you, and then trying to punch a tall person behind you.

Video of one of mine where you can kinda see how I set it. Compare it to yours and you'll probably see the differences.

It kinda seems like in the rodeo you turn your shoulders 90 then do a backflip and add a 90 at the end, is that sort of what your trying to say? Like i understand the rotation somewhat it just feels super awkward to me like i can't get my body to flip it right. and the flat 3 I did in that video was my very first attempt so it was kind of shtty but i know what you mean.

Which way do you throw your flats usually, like do you flip over your right or left should, because it may seem weird but maybe try throwing it the opposite way

I spin left and throw them over my left shoulder, I have actually almost done a rodeo the few few times I tried to flat but I sort of set my flats like a backflip grab japan and then tweak my shoulders to the side. I really think that if i could hit an airbag I could get so much more confidence to try one.

I mean just wait til a slush/ pow day, but I do recommend trying it right instead of left, since you aren't used to setting it that way you may be able to throw it more proper. Best of luck sorry I can't help more, props for sending it.

thats a flat spin

It's not actually, because I went fully inverted, with my feet above my head. Rodeo is fully inverted, and flatspin means your feet never go over your head. Body flat to the ground, hence flatspin.

I've been trying to turn it into a flatspin for a couple seasons and I can't which is super frustrating. True flat 5's are really hard, there's some secret to keeping your feet below your head and I'm not sure what it is.

I got this shit locked on tramp, still trying to get used to the extra weight on the legs on skis. What I did to learn is I basically threw a 3 and laid my body back and landed on the tramp on my back. So I'd be like flat in the air and do a 90 or 180 or whatever. Don't worry about the rotation at first just get used to the movement to lay your body flat. Then I started trying to make it the full 360 and really made my body follow my eyes. By adding a lead Japan or critical grab (sometimes a trailing safety worked), I was able to bring my feet around to the ground. Took many many tries so maybe take it to the tramp and practice there. Tramp skis also helped get used to the weight and grabs.

My problem on skis is I can't grab worth shit with poles, anyone have any tips for that?

it looks like you threw a little too far forward as opposed to back. also you need to keep your core muscles tight to avoid you upper body and lower body separating(i.e. drive your hips up and to the side). when they separate in the rotation thats what causes that forced/out of control feeling
