Hey Guys,

I want to go to Whistler for a week this summer. I will fly if I have to, but plane tickets from Pearson to Vancouver are about $800 return.

If anyone is planning on driving westward before the last week of June, please let me know and we'll cut down the gas expense and share the driving. I'll also bring killer jams and tons of beef jerky. How could you possibly say no to that? I may have access to a car, in that case I'll most likely have an extra seat if anyone wants a lift.

I can't get you a place to stay once we arrive, sorry!

are you seriously driving out west? i think the gas will be more expensive than a flight not to mention the time it will take

it's true. on average (depending on the car of course), and especially with the prices so high, I spend 50 - 60 dollars on gas each time, and that doesn't ever fill it anymore. On some days, if I fill it, I end up spending upwards of $80.00. I guarantee you'll fill up more than 10 times on the way out, and on the way back, so that's at least twice the price - just for gas. Not to mention food, motels, etc.

And oh yeah, take the time it takes to fly out west, and times it by itself like 5 times, and thats probably somewhere in the range of how long it's gonna take you to drive out there.

But other than all that, it actually sounds like it could be fun if enough people ended up going.

It is not even close to being as expensive.

When oil prices are high, plane tickets also go up. What do you think planes run on? Love?

You guys can't come.

i know exactly what planes run on. its called JET A-1, which is an unleaded/paraffin oil-based fuel. i also know that cars do not run on this, as they run on normal gasoline - an oil-based fuel as well, but not the same.

You forget to realize though, that it's all incremental. It's all about supply and demand. How many cars are on the road? How close are we to running out of car fuel? How many planes are in the sky? (relative to the # of cars on the road) How much further away are we from running out of jet-fuel? Also, how many people are helping to pay for the fuel in that one plane flight? (not to mention the government funding to the nations airline, in which you're paying in your taxes). I don't disagree that plane prices will go up when the price of oil rises, but it will go up more for car users.

And seriously, work it out. How much do you pay for a FULL tank of gas? Find out tomorrow. Now, find out your car's fuel consumption, and use that as a rough estimate, but know that with more people/baggage/weight it will be worse. Realise that you'll have to fill up anywhere from 1 - 3 times a day, depending on how much you drive. Now, find out how much a motel is for a night, and multiply that by a couple of nights. Now, double that entire price for the ride home, as well as any car gas you'll spend while you're there. It's proobabblyyyy gonna be more than 800...

I don't want to argue with you on this. Gasoline prices and jet fuel prices are both directly correlated to the price of oil. I work as an oil and gas analyst for a large independant institutional broker downtown and spend 13-16 hours a day researching and analyzing this subject. Airport fees, subsidies, margins, fuel differentials all have an effect on the price of airplane tickets which of course would lead to price control, yes. That incremental stuff is nonsense. We will run out of jetfuel and gasoline at the same time. Both come from refined crude. You don't choose your end product when refining crude, when you crack a barrel you more or less the same amount of different products. I just worked 17 hours and don't feel like doing this for free right now.

I had friends just drive 6,000 km from Sydney, NS, to Banff, AB, in a gasoline truck for $550 between two. So ~$550 return. It is only 4,500 to Whistler.

go to a hostle man

they are like dirt cheap like around 10-15$ a night but im pritty sure they are all on the whistler creek side (the farthest part of town away from blackcomb)

k w/e, either way, its still gonna be long, and flying will be short. i'd fly if i were you

have u guys ever heard of a road trip... its called driving somewhere for a long time and chillin with ur buddies and havin a good time... doesnt matter how long it takes

Greyhound.

It was about $320 both ways from here to Castlegar (4 hours south east of Kelowna) when I did it last summer. No hotels/motels/hostels, cheap fast food. Took less than 3 days too.

Look, I don't think this thread is about the most effective way to get to Whistler. Road trips, like said above, are also about chilling with some fellow skiers, listenin to sick jams, smoking reef and munching jerky. And on that note, I was thinking this exact same thing, how long are you thinking of going for? I might have access to a diesel jetta, which gets 1000km to the tank (and that 60% city too!) and fills for 45. Do the math, we would get out on 4.5 tanks of gas. 4.5 times 45 dollars= 205 dollars. Split between two. Motha fucka's.

How do I shot web?

lol I dunno

Greetings,

i didnt really read the thread to closely other then the first couple responces. but im not sure anyone pointed this out yet.

1 plane ticket = 800 there and back

1 car ride= lets say 800

4 people in the car comfertably

800/4 = 200

200 bucks each to go to whistler and back. doesnt sound too bad.

UGHHHHH of course.

Jesus, some of you people are not fun at all.

The driving is part of the road trip. It is fun. You chill, check out some new scenery, listen to some music, get stoked on your destination and eat beef jerky. Beef Jerky is necessary.

dan the factory i work at apperently closes down for 2 weeks in the summer...i'll find out the dates...

my best friend and i drove out west 3 years ago (gas was about $.75/L) in a Turbo 1.8L VW and we easily spent 1500-2K in gas its was soooo fucking pricy.

If you drive non stop like actually non stop the fastest you can do it in is about 48 hours. And thats averaging about 120K/H. Consistently doing about 160 through the parries.

If you end up doing this you should go through the states. In the states all the highways are separated so when you drive at night you don't have people headlight in you face. And when you drive though mountains its way more fun because you actually go over them.. in the rockies you just drive though. nice scenery but boring driving.

Set you car up like this, one man drive while the other sleeps:

Be sure to shotgun tall cans while in the car...
