The first major key is to open your mind to all types of skiing. I know that when I was a programmed racing bot, I believed that racing was the be-all-end-all of ski skill.
Be comfortable playing around too. Its super fun to be locking on your edges all day long like you're riding train tracks... but play around with the fun parts of your skis. Slide some turns, drag your tails across rollers, and practise skiing backwards super fast.
Try going slower too. Not when you ski, but even just sit down after you get off the chairlift (bonus points for chilling with snowboard friends while they do up their buckles) and take in the beauty of what is around you. Relax, and don't assign points to the first one down the hill.
IN the long term there's nothing wrong with racing... its fun as shit. Just need to make sure to appreciate skiing in all of its formats, and don't always have focus on speed and winning.
