RIP - Doug Coombs killed in Avalanche today

"you know its steep if it stops Doug Coombs in his tracks"

- photo caption from powder.

it was a bridger shot too... but not the above photo, which is awsome too.

Always such a bloody shame to lose one of the sports pioneers,a dn such an influential skier.

RIP.

Coombs finished out TGR's 'Further' with some jaw droping lines. 'Long live the king' was the last thing the narrator said in that movie. Tragic, but he died doing what he loves and i hope the mountains are huge wherever he's at now.

WTF?!? NO! Nooooo! Oh my god, I can't believe that. Oh fuck. Doug Coombs was my idol when I really started to get serious about skiing. FUCK. I can't believe this. I loved that man.

wow, this is crazy, ive watched so many films with him in it back in the day, he was always and inspiration and someone who i looked up to, one of the originals of the sport, tragic

i havent been on NS in months and i come on today and see this, Doug was one of my heros. Im sure he's making first decents whereever he is now.

On a side note, ive been busy skiing and out of the loop. what other tragic events happend this year that you are all refering to?

How did you find out about this. I'm looking for more info, but there's nothing.

Anyone have a link to a story or something?

Easily one of the best skiers of all time, it just goes to show you, no one is 100% a 100% of the time, not even the best.

Rest In Peace

Watched "the continuum" with some friends tonight, with him in mind.

Update on the accident over at Ttips. Looks like a slip on an ice patch in a couloir, rather than an avalanche. Very sad.

WOW. Yeah, it was no avie, it was a fall.

Here is a report from Ttips

"Doug Coombs has been killed in a fall while skiing in or around La Grave, France. Details of Coomb's death are just starting to emerge, but earlier reports that the legendary guide and pioneering extreme skier was caught in an avalanche appear to have been erroneous. The most current information we are receiving, from a source in contact with people on the scene in La Grave, is that Doug Coombs was skiing at the end of the day with three friends. They were descending a steep couloir. One of the four, reportedly a man from Colorado who had been a regular in La Grave the past couple of seasons, began skiing first, while Coombs and the others watched from above. The friend from Colorado apparently hit a patch with an ice layer underneath and fell in what was described as a definite "no-fall" zone. The Coloradoan reportedly washed over a cliff and disappeared from view.

At this point the details become sketchy. Coombs is said to have wanted to get a rope in order to check on his fallen friend's condition. While assessing the situation, Coombs also fell. The remaining two skiers in the party then called for a heli rescue. When the helicopter arrived some 20 to 30 minutes later, Doug Coombs was already dead. The victim from Colorado was still breathing, but unfortunately died later in the hospital."

Sad. Coombs wasn't the only fatality. Scary stuff.

Says something about someone who was willing to risk his life to help a friend.

Prays to both their family's. Reminds me way too much are Carl Skoog and his recent death in the Andes.

RIP

holy shit, can't believe this......

RIP to a legend of the sport, and condolences to the family. not cool at all.

I can't even write. This is a terrible tragedy. Doug was a hero. His skiing was effortless and graceful even in the gnarliest lines. He wasn't an adrenaline junkie, he had the soul. He dedicated his life to powder and progression and giving others the chance to see and do the most awesome things. My thoughts are with Emily and his son. I'm gonna go watch Groove.

His segment in further was really about what coombs was about. big first descents, powder, and having fun. i feel so much for his family and friends, may they all have any support they need. i'm also terribly sad to hear of his partner also killed. it is such a tragedy.

RIP 'Long live the King'

What? Coombs? NO! That's awful. He was a legend in the big mountain comunity. Best wishes to his family and friends.

Oh my god I can't believe this. This is soo tragic I don't even know what to say. Ever since the early days I have rocked his posters up on my walls, up there with the old school Plake posters. This is really really sad, a true pioneer of the sport. Probably one of the most well respected skiers around, especially by snowboarders. Watch all the old Standard Films and Coombs is taking them everywhere. I wish this wasnt true. RIP Doug, you will be missed.

This is just too sad, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Doug was such a passionate skier that did so much for our sport, he will not be forgotten.

such bad, bad news. we'll never forget you, Doug- with as many first decents as you had, it's impossible to look at the mountains without thinking of you. my best wishes go out to his friends and family.

Wow, I don't even know what to say. I have never met the man, yet greatly respect him. I remember watching Warren Miller movies back in the day with my bro, when I was like 5. Doug Coombs was one of the reasons I started skiing. I know the season is almost over, but everyone take 'er easy out there. The list of people who have died this year is already too big, and I don't want to have to add more names to it. After Teddy, I thought - hoped - that it would be put away for the season, but for some reason God has chosen to keep reminding us that we keep pushing the sport, sometimes too far. We have lost a legend, and while many of you may be too young to remember his skiing, you have probably been influence by Doug in some way. Shred the pow up there man, you will be missed.

this is probaly the worst thing i have heard in years. coombs was amazing, his skiing was amazing. R.I.P you will not be forgotten.

this is such a tragedy. its terrifying to think that perhaps the most qualified man in the world can still be taken by the mountains so easily. everyone be careful out there and use good judgement because this proves it can happen to anyone.

It is really sweet to see the amount of support that comes from the new school scene for a guy who was, decidedly old school.

R.I.P You will be missed Doug!
