Surprised there isn't a thread on this. Olympics start on the 6th.

Favourite event? Favourite athletes? Opinion on russian doping scandal? Discuss all thing Rio 2016

I think this games is going to be pretty significant in the sense that there has been a massive crack-down on doping over the past few months. This might be the games that starts to turn things around, or it'll be a blip in history that people will look back on and say,"well, I guess they tried". That, combined with the whole Zika thing means there are tons of top competitors who are choosing not to go. It'll be interesting to start seeing first-hand reports as more and more people make their way there. Are we going to see the same kinds of things as we did in Sochi (unfinished accommodations, etc)?

Favourite event - weightlifting - it's going to be lame seeing as how most top competitive lifters are currently serving bans for doping after a massive batch of re-testing from the Beijing and London games.

They've already foiled one terrorist plot. We'll see how good security will be. From what I heard, it will be insane.

Also, I'm assuming that this whole "don't put your head underwater" thing doesn't affect any swimmers, only boaters?

I think the triathletes and marathon swimmers are swimming outside on the beaches.

Possibly too early, but what's going to be the best site to watch the events from any country.

This honestly is a bit scary...

The Olympics have kind of turned into a corrupt shitshow imo.

Fun fact: The last Olympics to make a profit were SLC (winter) and Beijing (summer).

Why the fuck did they do that shit in RIO? Why don't they just have one facility they always keep the olympics at? So much more convenient and that way people don't end up getting AIDS and Zika or some shit

interested to see how this shit show unravels. people will die. hopefully not too many.

the olympics are going to need a reformat very soon. they need to be scaled back or something. most countries have enough shit on their plate these days, nobody wants to blow billions on a 2 week corrupt dopefest.

These olympics already are a shit show...

A bike path they built for cycling already collapsed killing 2 people, the beach volleyball courts got completely flooded out, and the launching dock for sailing collapsed less than one day after its completion.

On top of that, I have a friend sailing for Peru, and the country's coach boats were stolen the night after they launched them into the water. They later found the people that stole them and they were taking the motors off to sell them. They threatened to call the cops and the thieves apparently could have cared less, mainly because the cops probably wouldnt do shit.

The Australians got robbed when they evacuated their hotel due to a fire. Classy people rummaged through their stuff during said "fire." Some good stuff so far. Iv'e got my popcorn ready.

Van Vleuten's crash made me sick. Supposedly she's okay but that would've killed anyone else. I actually wouldn't be surprised if she suffered some sort of paralysis.

This happened last night during the men's gymnastics qualifiers. Fucking gnarly.

What was even worse was that they dropped him while he was on the stretcher.

I know. Seeing her lying there motionless as the second chase motorcycle went by had me holding my breath. That curb is brutal. Glad to hear she's okay, though.

Didn't a bunch of men crash around that corner as well?

Yeah, I guess a lot of people are disgusted that the Olympic committee didn't alter the route to make it safer.

Apparently "just" a concussion and 3 minor lower back fractures. In the ICU for the next 24 hours

I can't believe she didn't do anything to her neck or upper spine.

Yeah. They had just released that she was okay, but no more info on the extent of her injuries when I posted that, then went off to work.

Seriously though. That was one of the ugliest crashes I've ever seen.

Phelps=GOAT Olympian. I can't think of anyone else who has been as dominant as he has.

And Ledecky beat her own WR by 2 seconds, beating everyone else by 5!

I just finished reading an article about him saying this year is actually the first time he really went all in with the preparations. Going into earlier olympics the dude used to skip practices, party through the weekends and not really giving a fuck. If i remember correctly it also said that he hadn't done any butterfly practice at all(!) for the last two years before he got silver on the 200m.

The dive tank water turning green is kinda sketch lol

For sure. I think I read this afternoon that it's algae growth because it's super warm and not clean enough. Ha ha.

the games this year are hilarious. break records, kick everyones ass and win gold = everyone calls you a doper and cheater on social media if its not their country winning.

yea don't read yahoo news..

what actually happened was someone stole his teammates phone, so he ran after the person. as he was chasing him someone else punched him in the face. Nothing he could have done about that. He went to hospital as a precaution. Was not 'beaten up' at all. Sucker punched is a better wording for it.

Guaranteed he could have absolutely wrecked whoever punched him in a fair fight. Luckily high end martial artists don't abuse their skills, but he could have killed the dude if he wanted.

Holy shit that Armenian weightlifter's injury was terrible. I don't even like thinking about it

I just barely missed it, but it sounded bad. Did he dislocate his elbow?

Also, the 214 c+j to take gold was insane. Beat the old WR by 4kg.

Train Jousting should totally be a sport.

... that said. It's funny being in Not America during the olympics and watching completely different events...

...not to mention, watching teams perpetually lose rather than dramatically win them all like it seems America always fucking does.

Love that gymnastics and swimming get the most coverage of any sports since they don't get much attention outside of the Olympics.

Also just realized that Aliya Mustafana is pretty attractive.
