Ricky Gervais on Atheism

Listen to this guy. He says that atheists don't exist because a book says so. The book might be the bible or it might be the twilight series. Both have no credibility.

I don't get why atheists always have to be out to prove something, like they're always mad that people believe in something/religion/god. Clearly many people find comfort in religion and God and for the most part it helps give them guidance to live a better life. I don't believe in that shit but I'm happy that it helps others.
 
someone on here said that when you die, you're mind enters an endless dream state because your brain is still functioning. BOOM. Now I dont have to worry about dying cause that sounds quite comforting.

I understand both sides of the coin here. How could atheists get the word out to the ignorant masses if not by talking about it? Questioning beliefs. Okay, you believe in God, you are a religious person. You could be my best friend. If we can have intelligent conversations about it, hell, why not, but otherwise I'll leave you to your own as long as you keep your 'Christian morality' speeches out of earshot.

I don't know what happens if you die and neither does anyone else. Religion is a fucking scam, always has been. If your too stupid or unwilling to see the truth you can keep believing some garbage written in a book 1,500 years ago about a guy that lived 2,000 years ago then I pity you.
 
i guess i will have to be the first religious person in the thread so all you guys can hate on someone, but why does it bother you that people decide to have hope in something? bottom line to me is that if I am wrong, then hell im in the exact same situation you are, just sitting in a cemetery somewhere.. if i am right, however, then i am loving my "afterlife" while you are gettin buttraped by the devil. Being religious doesnt take anything away from my life, im still a cool person, i dont hit people over the head with bibles or yell at people with signs, i still party just as hard as you do, i enjoy all the same things as athiests. I dont understand why it is looked so down upon to have some hope for something more. Were all the same people, were human, so why is it such a dividing factor between people that one person believes the world was created by a giant boom and another believes something created it. Please dont feel "sorry" for me in believing in God, because all it is changing in my life is it is giving me hope and community, and to me thats not such a terrible thing.

I am religious, this didn't piss me off. I have sinned before, I know what I've done wrong. I'm forgiven. Have I ever met a nicer, tighter knit, more caring community than my religious one? Most likely not. Besides my friend group, and some of us are christians and some of us aren't. No one cares who believes in what because we are a big lovin' family and we all have one thing in common: shredding.

Best post I have ever seen by someone who is religious on NS. Even out of the 30 shit storm religious threads we had over the summer. And I agree with you.
 
If you truly think this way, I would take great pleasure in punching you numerous times.

Say and believe what you will about religion but to objectify an individual for choosing to believe in something is a pretty fucked up way to treat people.
 
this just makes ricky gervais seem like he is trying to sound better than religious people. by saying he doesnt need the incentive of going to heaven in order for him to do good things makes it seem like he is sayign thats why christians do it

I personally feel like I couldnt be an atheist because i would have a hard time thinking there is no reason why we are on earth, it all happened by fluke and there is nothign after this life. that idea just sucks so much...
 
bottom line to you can be pascal's wager, but bottom line to me is that there's no god. i don't mean it as an insult, i don't mean it to offend, i can't fathom why it should do any of those things. i don't care about "if i'm wrong, i'm going to hell, if i'm right i just die," because i can see absolutely no reason why i'd ever be wrong, it just doesn't make sense to me. beliefs aren't looked down upon by atheists because of what they are, they're looked down upon because they're groundless. and these groundless, archaic beliefs cause an absolutely immense amount of strife in the world. the sense of community you feel and the hope you get from your religion might be an amazing part of your life, but i get by fine without it, and my beliefs haven't caused genocides.

again, i'm not trying to offend anyone, even though i know i will. this is just what i believe.

Thank you. This is exactly how athiesm should be approached and argued for. Too many atheists (look above) come at religious people with "you guys are dumbasses" and the such instead of presenting their opinion and realizing that that is exactly what it is, an opinion. Religion is an extremely hard thing to believe, but after looking at a lot of the science out there, it is the same case with the science. Nothing really makes any sense, and instead of not having any hope I have decided to place my faith in "God". Some of the stories and things that I have seen and been a part of gives me the GROUNDS that make religion for me not GROUNDLESS. I understand atheist beliefs fully, but after looking at both sides of the argument I have decided to go with religion. I am not "uneducated" or "dumb" simply because of these beliefs, and anyone that says this is ignorant
 
I kinda just believe that go made this one particle or electron or whatever the fuck it was and was just like alright now this is done ill just kinda sit back and watch from here. I'm kinda stunned at the fact that more people dont think like this. Like once evolution was kind of explained to me my mind went straight to this. It's is basically the best of both worlds.
 
I can say it to offend, fuck, if that's what it boils down to, I don't give a shit. But if that fucks up your and my relationship otherwise, then I think you're the one missing out, not me and I say good riddance.

There is no God. Simple as that. If you want to worship 'God', be it one of the thousands throughtout human history, then do so without fucking up my life. This means: keep religion out of politics, out of morality issues simply 'because', out of evolutionary issues, out of salvation and all that bullshit that was created just to further the riches of the Vatican a few silly centuries ago, and that'll be just fine and dandy.

What Gervais here says, and not to 'sound better' than anyone, is that following a set of "Christian values" doesn't mean being bound to be a Christian, if you are not smart enough to learn good, human values without the help of a religion then you are fucked up three ways on Sunday anyway, let Darwin take his toll.
 
chicken came first. i didn't eat my first egg until i was 6, had my first mcnugget when i was 4. although there isnt any chicken inside of a mcnugget so i really dont know.
 
see here is one of those obviously uneducated people I was talking about earlier. Attacking people doesnt do anything, so I dont know why youre trying to sound like a badass here. Secondly, "keep religion out of politics" is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard, if something like religion is a huge part of millions of peoples lives, then obviously it is going to be brought into politics. I agree that there should not be an official state religion or anything like that, that is obvious, but saying keep religion out of politics is like saying keep peoples opinions out of politics, thats just a dumb argument.. have fun being mad at people simply because of their beliefs, in my opinion that makes you the one that "is not smart enough"
 
Okay, so I am the 'uneducated' one. What an original debunk for my opinion and argument. As for your statement about politics and religion, are you serious or is this another thinly disguised troll attempt? It is simply because of the FACT that there are so many believers that religious people, at least those who swear by the Lord and all that shit and push their religious agendas, be it Christian, Islam or whatever unto you, should be exempt from politics. That's it. There is no place in modern society for organized religion. Again, if you believe in God, the ONE God, then by all means do so. Just keep your stuff out of mine and the rest of the people of the world unaffected by religion.

As for NUGGET, it seems there is a tendency for the bat shit insane people to influence more bat shit insane people, and if we look at Sarah Palin, hell, one of the bat shit insane people already made it to senator in one of the most powerful countries on Earth.
 
Not too sure. I have a plethora of friends who have different beliefs or none at all. The only thing that I dislike is excessive drinking and drug use. I'm not going to preach to them about how it's bad, I'll just simply ask them to not talk about it in front of me. If that's how you feel about religion, then just say that. If that friend or person gets upset because you don't share what they have in their life, screw em'.
