Reusing Existing Mounting Holes.

This summer I am planning on taking the bindings off of my Hellbents to give them a custom paint job. (I've done a few pairs of skis, I realize that eventually they will start to chip, so please spare me lecture about using thin coats of paint and not too much clear coat.) Anyway, my question is, If I unscrew my bindings and take them off of the skis, will screwing them back into the same holes weaken the bindings connection to the ski? In other words, will I be more likely to pull my bindings out of my ski next season if I do this? I cant afford to mess up my pow skis. Thanks a bunch NS.

i've done it a few times just with wood glue and it's worked totally fine as long as the holes aren't stripped

if they are stripped then mix some epoxy with steel wool and put that in the holes. everyone has his opinion on this but it's worked fine for me

yeah, that's pretty much the best way to go, I always use wood glue (unless the holes are stripped - then I take it to a shop and get them heli-coliled, but I might try the steel wool and epoxy next time).

off topic sort of..but i skied on a pair of skis i painted all last year and the paint held up really well. i used krylon FUSION. made just for pastic. and yes, a good wood glue and your good to go.

I took heelpieces off and back on my park skis 5 times last winter. It's fine.

even if they do rip out like on my old skis, you can fix em; my skis had torn out heelpiece, epoxied back into placethen it tore out again, got it helicoiled back into placethen tore it out again, got brass inserts, tore those out as well
then i said fuck those incapable shops, i dremeled out the hole so its mushroom shaped, mixed epoxy with steel wool (as mentioned) youst put the inserts back in and i was ready to got :)been riding them all winter and theyre still holding up fine :)
but i think you'll be fine, taking em off once in a lifetime (of a ski) isnt gonna do that much damage...but don't forget the woodglue, not so much for its adhesive strength, but because it works as a seal that prevents moist from going into your wood core....
good luck, and post pics of how your skis turned out!

when i remount bindings into the same holes, i like to use slow setting marine epoxy. even tho the holes aren't stripped, there still is more space between your screws and core then originally, as you will not thread the screws back in exactly the way they went in. ( they wont be following the previous thread pattern ) but i like marine epoxy because it is thicker than wood glue, and is designed to be used in wet conditions (snow)

id use heli coils or some sort of brass insert, just my paranoia of ripping out of skis. might as well make them even more bomber then before.
