Hey guys so i am getting my boots reshaped because of injuries to my feet and ankles this summer. I'm not talking about the liner, but the shell. Do you guys think there will be any noticeable changes like discoloration and stuff like that? its not a big deal i just want to know. Also if any one has had the same stuff done to their boots and got successful results? k+ for good answers thanks guys

i'm sure someone else will know better than me, but as far as i can remember you can grind the shell but the plastic doesn't hold up very well to punching. i could be wrong, but i believe that's the case

bring the boots to a bootfitter. as said above some may shave/punch boots.... i dont know if it will discolor it, but getting your boot to fit should be much more important than having a perfect looking boot.

Get your boots stretched, rather then punched or ground. FT's use pretty thin plastic so they dont take well to grinder or punching. Stretching the old school European way will work the best. But be aware if you stretch the width you will lose volume in the instep.

Before you get any shell work done make sure you have a good custom footbed. Stretching should not be done until your foot is stabilized or your foot may just spread into the extra space.

Your correct on the punching. (I don't know about the shave thing. But FTs plastic makes them hard to work with. But take them to a fitter. They will tell you for certain.

I'm getting them done by a pro and I'm going to trust that he knows what he's doing and yes I have a custom foot bed. I'm get to see them tomorrow so we will see what happens and what technique he used.

Alright so i got my boots all reshaped and they were perfect for about 3-4 days then i started having the same problems as before. which was the boot being too narrow and causing foot pains. What are the chances that the plastic moved back into its previous shape?

Very high. My friend works in a shop that specializes in stretching boots to fit. That happened to his FTs and it's happening to mine as well. He said that other brands don't really have this problem.

every companies' boots react to stretching/grinding in different ways. sometimes punches hold better on some boots than others, even if a similar material is used. What your boot-fitter has to be careful with is not to take the boot off the stretching tool too quickly. The heated plastic has to cool and harden properly and if it comes off the stretching tool too quickly it can shrink a bit. You also have to be careful with how you dry and store your boots. Never dry your boots next an open heat source- they heat can cause the plastic to return to it's original shape. Always remove your liners from the shell when drying and place the liners on a room-temp air source. No heat in the liner because this can cause it as well to lose its molded shape.

The other thing to note is, that unless you have a footbed to stablize your foot, your foot may just spread into the extra space created by streching the boots. In my shop we dont strech boots unless there is a custom footbed in them. Its just not worth it. Often the footbed can mean you dont need to alter the shell.

This is what I would have looked at. If you have one, have a fitter see if it is supporting your foot corectly, maybe it needs stiffening. If you dont have one get one.

Absolutely priority for drying liners, footbeds, and shells. And if you need to accelerate the drying process, these are money:

If you can snag some from family when they buy TV's computers or whatever; the big ones in a somewhat cloth bag are the best. Also super good for storing over the summer.
