Removing old wax

Some people don't recommend this, but I use goo gone to clean the base then remove all the solution before waxing. Again confirm this with other first. All of the goo gone has to be removed from the bases after 5-10min.

Wax in the base isnt a bad thing...you can ski it off pretty quickly too. It only really matters to remove it all if youre using speed skis for legit racing. Other than that, its not super important.

Heres a good video. Keep in mind, he is tuning like he would for an important race. Do half this and youre set

use the cheapest high temp wax your show has (yellow swix for me), drip and iron on, and while it is still hot scrape the ski, then use a brass brush followed by another scraping

Its a hot scrape. After applying the cheap wax, scrape it while its is still hot and it will pull all of the dirt/shit out of your base. Then apply you intended use wax, let sit for a few hours and then scrape/buff. Be sure you are scraping all the wax off the ski though, you don't want to leave the wax on your bases, the idea is that the bases are absorbing the wax.

"Wax remover" or "base cleaner" isn't for general cleaning of bases.

Hot-scrape instead. But anyone who hot-scrapes before every wax job has way too much time on their hands. I'll wax a pair of skis about every 6 days of use, but only hot scrape each pair about 3 times per year.
