Remounting skis

hey. i am looking into buysing some second hand skis and i was just wondering how much remounting would effect a ski and how many times they can be remounted and still be ok?Thanks ++ k for usefull comments and or bumps

Depends on the ski, most wood core skis can take several mounts (I usually draw the line at 3), as long as the core isn't rotted, and the holes are spaced out enough you won't have any problems. If it happens to be a foam core ski, they can really only take 1 mount total.

allright thanks so much!! Its a wood core so i think i should be ok. i think its only two mounts on here at the moment so it hopefully will be allright!

how far apart is the minimum before you think theyre too close?

if i remount i center, which im planning on doing myself, two of the holes are really close, so im thinking of reusing two holes but then theyd be mounted at like +7.5ish where center is at +7. will an extra .5cm forward from core center not really make a difference or is that a retarded idea???

Make sure you plug.. I would say 5mm min distance between.. what skis and bindings? makes a difference some screws go deeper then others. also there are 3 screw or 4 screw toe patterns along with 4/5 hole heel patterns

what bindings are you using to mount and what holes are you planning on reusing (toe piece or heelpiece)?

I usually like at least a full cm between holes.

ok i think itll be within 1cm so not gonna do that. and the rear screws of the tow piece will go into the old holes of the front two screws of the tow piece. and the bindings are just some basic, kind of low-skill rossi bindings (din only goes to 10) in a pair of k2s.

thanks for the help. i guess the real question is whether mounting like half a centimeter forward from core center will be a big deal

you could just adjust the track (assuming it has one...most bindings other than pivot and fks have a track that the heelpiece can be adjusted on) so that it fits into the holes and you can still put the midsole of the boot at center.

i hadnt thought of that, but i dont think it would work. ill try to explain:

if i center mount these, the new holes to be drilled for the rear pair of screws on the tow piece would be less then a cm below the old holes of the front pair of screws on the tow piece on the skis. i dont have the skis with me right now, but it seems like adjusting the heel wouldnt make a difference unless the tow could somehow move on a track as well, which it cant. am i wrong?

i had my new skis mounted at a ski shop. they rear-mounted them. ( this was like 3 years ago) the shop said they had no idea how to center mount skis, so i was forced to remount. it wasnt that bad.

Yeah, the toe shouldn't have a track, I was just trying to get the holes into the right place with the heelpiece. There really isn't a way to get around it. You either have to ski at +.5 (which you will notice...it's kinda awkward...but you might be able to get used to it), or mount closer to the holes. It's really a judgment call you'll have to make.

damn. i was kinda hoping that skiing at +.5 wouldnt be too bad. but anyway thanks for the help. when i gettm back from the shop i will measure and reassess my options. thanks for the help

sorry to thread jack OP, but your question was kinda answered

It won't work dude. The Look toe mount isn't a rectangle, so the rear screws won't fit in the old front holes.

Take them to your shop and let them take care of it, sound like you could mount at about -1 and dodge the old toe holes.

Old bump but I know you're still active so...

I the STH heel piece out of my ski. They were mounted at center. Can I remount the heelpiece 1cm back, leave the toe piece where it is, then move the heelpiece forward on the track so I'm still center mounted??

Should be plenty of room to do that. Just check where the heel piece is on the track, you can go either forward or backward depending on where you have more room.
