Refresh vs. EDIAS: The Clear Victor

After watching each move multiple times I have come to the conclusion that EDIAS is far superior. I know this is true because every shot in EDIAS is better produced, filmed, and placed more artfully into an edit than its less-than-Refreshing counterpart. Dane Tudor shows up and proves that he is THE most well-rounded skier out today and Poor Boyz captures it perfectly. Due to this and the rest of its star-studded cast EDIAS delivers more bangers-per-minute than any other ski movie to date. Period.

This is not to say that Refresh did not have its standouts. Philip Casabon dethrones Wallisch and succeeds him as the new king of technical handrail style. There is a strong showing from a few other riders, but the movie simple lacks the “What the FUCK!?!?!” factor that EDIAS relentlessly forces into each viewer's eyes. The smallest features tricked in EDIAS rival the biggest features hit in Refresh.

EDIAS is the best ski movie to come out in ten years, and Durtchi's and Tudors segments are the best in recent history. Refresh is a good movie, but in the end feels like a slightly repackaged Level 1 flick from years past.

Buy EDIAS now.

yeah i feel like every l1p movie since maybe forward or high five has reminded me of the one before it. but they always have such sick rail skiers..

I think they are both excellent, and both have their own high points. Both are all around excellent - it's really hard to figure out which is better overall. Honestly, EDIAS SHOULD be better than Refresh - look at the number of riders PBP has and all the big names (not to say that Level 1 doesn't have big names - but PBP clearly has more) and they probably have a bigger budget too. That being said, I agree I think EDIAS is an all around better movie than Refresh, but they are both SUPER STELLAR films that each have their own style and bangers - it's very difficult to compare the two.

nice review, saw EDIAS for the first time at a premier this past wkend, can't wait to see it again as it was mind blowing and had the crowd gasping with amazement and had everyone pumped. Dane Tudor was insane, I thought he was good in Journal but just went to another level in EDIAS

have both EDIAS and Refresh on order and looking forward immensely to Refresh from the consensus of the freeskiing community!

If "what the fuck factor" is all you buy ski movies for, then yes, I'd bet EDIAS would float your boat. But you'd have to tell me what it is you define as "art" if EDIAS is more "artfully" composed than Refresh.

Do you like booters? Buy EDIAS.

Do you like urban? Buy Refresh.

Do you like skiing? Buy both.

I DISAGREE. Refresh had way more bangers than EDIAS. and you have to take into account that the videos are very different in style. EDIAS lacked the good soundtrack in my mind, and refresh had it. and you said casabon dethrones wallish on urban? naw, he just proved he is right up there with wallish, just a little different style.

yeah, if you're looking for an urban/park movie with some epic backcountry/big mountain thrown in then Refresh is perfect - the two urban sections of EDIAS really can't compare, however Tudor and Durtschi killed it so hard in the BC that you really can't beat them. Again, it's a tough call to say which one's better and everyone is going to have their own opinion based on what they like to watch (someone who like urban skiing is going to like Refresh better, someone who like BC is going to like EDIAS better).

If you think EDIAS is the best movie made in the past 10 years, then you obviously have never seen a good ski movie before. EDIAS is a bunch of salomon kids skiing (which is sick) and durtchi. I dunno if you noticed how well together refresh was vs EDIAS but refresh is so much better and is 10 times as banger IMO. I really have no faith in the current ski community of people who think EDIAS was better than refresh.

in my opinion, Refresh had a better frame. With Warren's voice (which is just enough, not too much) it gives that artsy touch that EDIAS doesn't have. Both have sick skiing though, but overall prefered Refresh. Wallisch and Phil are part of the reasons why.

IMO Shits getting redundant, these 2 companies used to have such different styles, along with rage films. and in the last maybe two years PBP has changed their style to fit the trend and became exactly like Level 1. Rage as well has moved in level 1s direction. Level 1 themselves have lost the unique awesome soundtracks they had back in long story short. I feel like this industry is due to be truly refreshed with an original movie, the likes of which hasnt be seen since IDEA.
However as far as this debate goes having Warren Miller in their film however really set refresh apart for me.

The ak trip, hand rails were both ak....then the 6.0 trip it seems like poorboyz has become more of an advertising now then just a good movie....I know all movies are adverstising but poorboyz pushes it a little to far it seems

here would be my thought.

EDIAS has the edge on big mountain

Refresh has the blatant advantage on urban and park.

But refresh has warren miller. and adam delorme. therefore refresh wins.

that being said, edias was also incredible. and durtschis seg made me shit my pants, but i feel like that movie got a little stale in the middle.

I like how you say these things like they're fact.

It's just one's own opinion.

I felt the shots in Refresh were shot better, more creative, and just flowed better in general. Refresh captures an area of skiing that is more rare.

Some of the shit Hornbeck and B-Dog do is pretty much exclusive to those two riders... i've never seen it anywhere else.

from a filmaking standpoint, refresh is clearly better, for a wow factor and trick standing EDIAS may have it on non urban, but its close. PBP just has such a stale editing style...though i think shot quality improved this year which maybe have to do with a certain mr jeff thomas...

Both soundtracks were mostly awful minus a few songs. The skiing was obviously good and very technical. Durtschi's segment from EDIAS and Casabon's from Refresh were really all I thoroughly enjoyed and could actually stand to watch time and time again. There's still something a little lacking in ski movies. Something that is separating them from say, That's It That's All. The skiing is there absolutely, but I can feel something missing, not sure what though.

WHAAAAT!?!??!

this was the best PBP soundtrack in a while, the most questionable song they had was the Sabbath track, and that still managed to work.

and all of refreshes soundtrack was BANGER.

No no son, if you saw EDIAS at a premier, everybody and anybody not covered in the tallest tall-ts and flat peaks went wild over that track. Without a doubt in my mind the best placed and picked track in the entire movie.
Kids don't appreciate Sabbath, they need too...
I've been watching both movies on replay for the last week. I think i enjoy Refresh more, but to see banger shots I'm all about EDIAS. I'm a back-country/big-mountain man. Charlie went off the chains, my favorite segment of the year, Josh Stack does not get enough cred for some redic shit, sw right 7 stomped what?
Tim despite having near vert take offs just pushed back-country a little far for this year. To me the highlights of his sections were the rodeo/misty/switch spins of gnar gnar lines.
Tanner Hall, i say no more...
Refresh dope sauce!
Casabon was a stand out and Delorme and Hornbeck and Adams but to me there weren't enough shots that hit my buttons.

Winner

AK in EDIAS vs AK in Haines Refresh

East Rails and Rail Steeze vs Helsinki Rail Seg & Michigan Rails Refresh

Ski Bowl Park Shoot vs Mammoth Park Shoot EDIAS

Tanner, C R & Spriggs vs Rainville, Bibby, Vanular EDIASDurtschi vs Wiley EDIAS Nike 6 team vs Hornbeck, Casabon and Delrome Refresh

i think the 'missing link' you might be referring to would be the fact that thats it thats all had an 8 MILLION dollar budget. i think it was the best snowsports movie ever made but frankly with that kind of budget it would've been shocking if it wasn't.

i find it hilarious how people are trying to objectively define which movie is better out of these two. different strokes for different folks, thats the beauty of it. this shit is, has to be, and will always be subjective. 'better' is in the eye of the beholder.

EDIAS was mostly good, some parts sucked though. Whats up with all the stupid quotes?

"this is really dangerous bla bla you can die, but its fuuun bla bla"

Durtschi and Tudor parts were banger though.

Refresh was banger the whole time. Soundtrack was better. Warren Miller was better than the stupid EDIA quotes, Urban was better, Park was better, creativity was better (Delorme, Hornbeck. Harlauts Dub 12 Blunt was better than any double in EDIAS. Wallischs shifty to grab spins were better than anything in EDIAS..

And the most important part: LEVEL 1 is actually a crew. Not just a bunch of pros.

They all rep LEVEL 1 hard. And you feel that they are all friends. EDIAS lacks that. Still a banger movie though.

thank for an honest review of the two movies. im happy that people will still voice their opinion on this website despite knowing that their opinion will quickly be disagreed with by the greater community found on this site.

i must say i liked EDIAS more.Refresh was sick. overall though i think EDIAS is better. absolutely loved Tanners BC segment.

something about seeing handrail, handrail, handrail jump. just does not make me want to ski as bad VS Tanner ripping up the mtn.

Meh I thought both were equal, I found both had banger parts, both had boring parts but w/e i'm indecisive. I don't think ppl give enough credit to PBP for urban though it may never be the most gnarly stuff but they always film and edit it so well it always make me want to watch it over and over

here's the way i see it.

there's multiple segments in the pbp movie that i'd skip everytime.

everytime i watch refresh i never skip a segment.

refresh wins.

refresh is awesome, haven't seen EDIAS yet, but im getting tired of hearing about legit pow/cliff/backcountry skiing in level one movies. honestly besides some of the few shots of wiley, its nothing special. the ak shots are........well lets just say snowboarding in general puts it to shame. i know there's much better BC in msp/tgr/rage and others, but i keep hearing claims year after year about level one. wiley is definately doing some killer shit, so is duncan...i mean hes 16! i just think it will be a few years until they are even near the other guys in terms of BC. turbo for example....a closing shot of a relatively small double hit by stefan thomas? come on level one. stefan thomas is one of my favorite riders but seriously, there are hundreds of people who send stuff wayyy bigger that everyday.

id love to see level one step back from AK and go towards a more jib/pow style, sort of like the idea crew. i think theyd have a lot more success w/ fitting in the movie and would fit the types of riders they have a lot better.

still absolutely loved it, will keep buying level 1 movies every year, some of the segments this year were something new and shall i say "refreshing" ie delorme, casabon, hornbeck, and warren miller in the movie made it just great.

It's actually more along the lines of bringing each skier's personality into the movie. By the end of That's It That's All you had a very, very clear understanding of what kind of person Travis Rice was, and also his friends. There were honest, unscripted interviews throughout the movie that were well timed. EDIAS, on the other hand, had Tanner Hall speaking over a clip of Tim walking away from the most banger shot of the movie, when it should have been Tim.

i completely, completely agree.

The Refresh sountrack was horrible imo.

the Haines song made me so scared for the rest of the movie.

I watched refresh and edias in a row, and was hoping that refresh would be better, cause i always find Level 1 movies to be WAY sicker than anything else that comes out. I was more impressed by edias though.

(Both movies still made me happy, but there's serious room for improvement in both companies)

Your points are all opinions. you cant say another movie is better than another becasue that's known as personal preference. Obviously you prefer one style of film as opposed to another. TO ME, refresh had a better feeling than any other movies I've ever seen, which is why i liked it better. I would also argue that the skiers in refresh had superior styles and fluidity than those in EDIAS. I would also argue that Refresh had a better soundtrack, and the addition of Warren only made it better.

Anyone here could argue back and forth for or against each film, but in the end they are both sick, so who cares really. i just like Refresh better becasue I'm more loyal to the Level 1 company as a whole.

agreee with everything you have here... except Wiley vs. Durtschi.

Wiley blows me away, best pure skier I can think of.

Exactly what i was going to say.

A ski movie is not about a bunch of edits put together, its an entire film that needs a coherent story line. Refresh kills it in this matter where none have before. Not to mention all the skiers in the film.

and everyone is forgetting will wesson, those tricks in a film gives the vid like +10 banger points.

BUT, i also totally respect edias and have watched many of the segments over and over, so props to both companies and all tha riders.
