I don't know much about them but i'd say look on a wakeboarding web page also cause they use winch systems all the time.

Heine Snow Tools sells winches. There super expensive, but i bet their professional quality and power.

not sure we will be able to make our own given Ben has already gutted his Jeep and is making us an epic Winter Assault Vehicle, but maybe. We do have the welding equipment and all that jazz.

you can pick up wakeboard winches for around a grand on ebay that look like they've got everything you'd need. just search wakeboard winch.
I don't know what kind they're using, but we use this winch called the "Grinch". We use it for skimboarding and it seems to work real well. We've never had any problems with it and it can pull you at a pretty good speed. 30ish mph. Heres a link to one..

you could also try the banshee bungee, its not a winch, but its kinda the same principle, its also about $800 less than your average winch, and it doesnt make any noise when you use it.

I mean unless you're using it for a comp or something,bungees are way more practical and easier to use/get.
winches are pretty cool though, apparently you can make one out of a lawnmower engine so maybe look into that.
