Recommend me a ski thread #34568

Hey all, my parents just offered to help me out with a new pair of skis this Christmas because I'm a desperately poor college student who's been on the same skis for five seasons now. Badass. Now I just need to figure out what to get, which is tough because I've been out of the market for so long. That's where you come in.

Here's the deal. I'm six feet tall, 150 pounds. I live on the Ice Coast. I've got that whole all-mountain thing down pretty solid and I ride my skis hard, so I need something that isn't gonna puss out. At the same time, even though I'm REALLY bad at it, I've been loving the park the last few years, so I want something that's lively and can hold its own on jumps and rails. I spend a pretty equal amount of time on the mountain and in the park. Finally, price range... my parents are helping me, but they're not exactly loaded, either so I don't wanna go much over $400 if I can help it.

Thanks much!

if big mountain is your thing i would reccomend the Kung Fujas for the east coast, it is big enough to do some big mountain stuff but rides like a park ski, maybe look into the nordica zero too, if you're looking for a park ski that can charge more of the mountain i would look at K2 revivals, line cronics, or maybe salomon 2012s, if you want these skis for five years again scratch the 2012s though. hope this helped a little

Wow bluehouse looks incredible. I almost don't wanna take my parents up on this offer just so I can wait until those are available again, really a shame they're backordered until March... I'll look at the Fujas and some of the other recommendations and make a call. Thanks for the tips.

How can you say that about the 2012? People have been riding them for less than a month now and you are already making durability claims. I literally have not seen one thread on NS or heard anyone complaining about the durability.

If you are looking for an awesome all mountain park ski, go for the 2012, you have camber underfoot so when you are carving and skiing on piste they will be nice and snappy. Then they have rocker at the tip so if you get into some deeper snow they will charge right through that and float nicely. Also because they are 91 underfoot they will ski well in deeper stuff and make mince meat out of any variable conditions.

Hey man if you are on a budget and you nees goo ski, coreupt have some great deal, take a look they worth it

Armada El-Ray

K2 Kung Fujas

Line Chronic Cryptonite

Volkl Bridge

Line Blends

Personally I would choose either the Blends or the Chronics in 183cm. Chronics if you want to focus more on park @93 in the waist and Blends for all-mountain backside skiing at 100 in the waist. Both are stiffer compared to most line skis and are relatively cheap compared to other brands.

Cool, I'll check 'em out, thanks dude.

Quick side question: Anyone know how a pair of old-ass Look 110 bindings I have on my PEs would transfer over the the Fujas? I don't see why they wouldn't but I found a pair fo Fujas, which seem to be some of the most well-loved skis anywhere, for $405 which is an amazing deal but outside of my price range if I have to buy bindings also. Thanks!

i am not saying that these specific skis are not durable, i am just saying that past experience with salomon has lead me to avoiding their park skis, no hate intended, if i recall correctly i was also recommending them, i just dont completely trust salomons park skis yet. lo siento

I have slomon ski and they are durable. Third season on them /claim . But ithey are the 07/08 the dumont, best park ski ever made by salomon imo.

alright i am wrong, but i was not intentionally hating on salomon, i just do not know how the 2012s hold up, and i saw several pairs of demo k2s go through the summer with zero edge cracks

What skis have you been riding until recently.

From what you said it sounds like you like to ski pretty hard on groomed, with a bit of park and a bit of pow when it comes. For that i wouldn't bother with rocker, lots of those skis aren't bad on groomed but there are better alternatives. i'd look at the Older Line Blends, Surface Watch Life and Rossignol Scratch BC/S5. You should be able to find new older models of all 3 for 400 or less.

I've been on PEs... real, real shitty. I only really do groomers if I'm lapping the park or the conditions truly suck, which I guess is kinda frequent on the EC, but not what I want my skis to focus on. I'm pretty set on a pair of 179 Brigades, actually, I've read nothing but good things about them except that heavier skiers occasionally overpower them, but I'm a scrawny fuck, so... they seem pretty perfect, and I got a kickass deal from matt.rad ($300 with bindings he's gonna set to my boot size before shipping along with a full tune/wax). Can't complain.

You won't overpower them, its a killer ski, and the deal is rock solid. My Scratch BCs are still one of my favorite skis (the year before they changed the name to the Brigade), I have to say, you won't be disappointed.
