I need something new to read, recommend me some books. My favorites from the past have been fear and loathing, the catcher in the rye, unbroken, all the david baldacci books, and the boy who sailed around the world alone.

I was thinking of reading the rum diary or lost in shangri-la next but I want some suggestions.

help me out NS

Man knows what he's talking about

If on a Winters Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino

That book changed everything I know about 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person writing. Read it.

Chuck Palahniuk

Dude who wrote Fight Club

But

Definitely not his best work

But sweet nonetheless

Try Choke

or

Survivor is pretty awesome

Read about fractals! they are cool.

and good book about them is......

reading liars bra poker right now, it is about the 1980s bond market and being a salmon brother trader during that time, if you are interested IN that stuff look into it

American Psycho, one of the only books that's ever given me nightmares. I had to put it down for a couple days and I'm always reminded of it when a Talking Heads song plays. One of only a handful of books that has changed the way I perceive certain things.

This was a good read for me.

Dunno if it's your cup of tea though. If you're looking for fiction I'd say check out The Hichhikers guide to the galaxy collection of books.

Into the Wild was something different than I expected, it was ok but it was not my favorite. Maybe I'm illiterate though, because I am also not super thrilled with Inherent Vice so far haha.

I just got done with The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Woa, and it was so good. I also second Shantaram - such an awesome book.

haven't watched the movie yet but I heard it's really good!! Into the Wild is one of the best books I have ever read though, also Dean Koontz is a good author if you like thriller books, Velocity and Intensity are 2 of his crazy stories. happy reading!!

Damn that's some terrible formatting.

Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs by Hunter S. Thompson is definitely worth your time.

I think the book is much better than the movie.

NS reads?! Wowz

I recommend either the Hot Zone or the Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston.

It has a lot to do with shit like Smallpox, Ebola, and other scary shit. I read it in 2013 before all the hype and media about Africa and have tracked the outbreak news since the first day it was posted on the cdc. Even if you aren't interested you should check it out cuz Preston is really good at grabbing people and sucking them in.

Check out the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell and "The Way of the Seal" by Mark Divine. Both great reads.

Came here to post Outliers. Also David and Goliath by the same author.

I've been reading through the whole James Bond series. Fun, quick reads.

Really liking Bill Bryson right now too

I just started this. They are a good time.

If you want other entertaining, quick reads, check out Clive Cussler. Every book has the same ludicrous plot, but they are a good time.

My go to books when I don't want to read something new are:

Hitchhikers Guide (all of them) - Douglas Adams

Chronicles of Narnia (all of them) - CS Lewis

LOTR - JRR Tolkien

Mutiny on the Bounty (trilogy) - Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall

Into Thin Air

If you read Into Thin Air you also have to read The Clymb. More of a factual representation of that Everest mission that kind of calls out Krakauer for being a huge bitch and a fraud.

Martian by Andy Weir

Please, I need someone to talk to

Just finished it yesterday! Loved it a lot more than I thought I would. The beginning almost lost me but other than that it was excellent. Hope Ridley Scott makes a good movie of it.

damn just finished this joint a few days ago. Real good. Should be an interesting flick with Damon as Watney. Only gripe is it wasn't long enough haha. Felt like he could have expanded on the solitude aspect of it. i dunno. still super good.

John Grisham's The Firm or Rainmaker

I'll have to try and read them again sometime. Liked the movies for some of those especially the client but didn't read the books.

Read half of the chamber and it got super dry in the middle. I just felt like I was reading 100's of pages of nothing. I was like 12 then though so maybe if I gave it another shot I'd find it a good read.

Also the bible.

Only read kafka on the shore if you can appreciate the symbolic value of incest. other wise, avoid it.

True. It is heavily laden with symbolism, which is the beauty of it. It's highly metaphysical, forcing us to think about the powerful truths of how everyday occurrences affect us. It really made my head hurt some times trying to figure out how/why all of the different themes are interconnected. you can really tell that every single detail is highly thought out on how it relates to the rest.

But the story moves so quickly and is at times so intense that it's impossible to put down. It's told in two converging narratives, each of which became so compelling that I ended up having to finish the one I was on so I could figure out what happened in the other. a vicious cycle.

I'll add that so far The Shadow of the Wind is a fantastic read as well.

Depends on what your looking for:

Quick read/exciting stories-

The Bobby Gold Stories, Anthony Bourdain

Inferno, Dan Brown

American classic/ Sci Fi -

The Pearl, John Steinbeck

The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway

Slaughterhouse 5, Kurt Vonnegut

The Illustrated Man, Ray Bradbury
