Recommend a ski for my dad

My dad tore his acl a few years back and last year was his first year back on skis.

the only problem is he has slalom skis that weigh in at like 100 pounds and I'm afraid of them hurting his acl furthermore..

So what we need is a light, all mountain ski that can handle east coast hardpack carving and will hold up in the bumps. He has been skiing his whole life so he is an above average skier.

Right now I am really into him getting prophet 90s but they are very expensive and im having a hard time selling him on a "twin tip" which he just sees as a freestyle "monkey park" ski.

So help me and my dad out so i can shred with him!!1!!!one!!!!

prophet one sounds pretty good, but i dont know much about all mountain skis for no park.

i've been looking at twins for my dad to get, eh also had a knee injury. basically, I'm thinking anything with normal camber and a thinner waist cause thats what he's probably used to. So i'd look to thinner waisted park skis. Rossignol comes to mind, unless tehy made their park ski rockered this year?

or you could just get him normal skis. My dad was going to buy normal skis until he tried some twins, so get your dad to give it a shot. although, i guess he won't have skis before ski season then will he?

It would be cool to get him on prophets....that's a good ski but it sounds to me like he would prefer a directional ski.....hop on evo.com....they have a slew of that stuff in the outlet....but if you could get him to demo the prophets....pretty sure he'd be blown away.

on3p vicik fits what you are looking for perfectly. 104 under foot, fat enough to float in pow, skinny enough to rip turns on groomers(and boy do they do that well). Half twin should he want to attach skins, very high build quality(better then the prophets i can tell you that), and an over all medium-stiff flex to give them constant support at speed.

i have noticed that my dads skis are like 60 somthing under foot. thats like nothing. look at his old skis and try to get the dimensions within 10mm i think my dad would have a hard time going from a 60 to a 90.

if he is at all a capable skier, he won't have any issues. My dad went from a pair of 82 under foot carving skis to a pair of proto type on3p's that are 106 under foot and rockered, took him all of 3 runs to get use to it.

my dad loved the 182 surface watch life's I had. They carved like a dream which he liked. I'm gonna have him use my on3p c&d's this winter, should be interesting.

I would have a look at the rossi experience range, in particular the Exp 83. Its a great carving ski will slight rocker tip to make it a little more forgiving and some better float in pow. Going to a twin may not be the best idea. A twin tip does not carve the same as a conventional ski, they tend to skid the tail more. If your dad is used to conventional skis it could be hard for him to adapt, and if he has a bad knee that may not be a great idea.

Other skis I would look for are the salomon Enduro 850 XT. Similar ski to the EXP 83, my dad skied them last year and really liked them, I also tried them and there a great carving all mountain ski. If your looking cheaper, look for some used k2 Recons. They were my dads old skis and he really liked them, again as did I.

Hope this helps

Plastic Bag- I was looking to get my dad some skeeze, and he was also having knee problems. He ended up getting the JJ, and he says his knees feel like his college days. The minimized torsional resistance on the lower leg/knee are really helps rockered skis be a bit more forgiving. Without knowing your dad (or his skiing style/preferences) I would say go for a JJ. Solid on groomers, and exceptional in pow.

Nuff said...

alright so heres the deal, my dad bought prophet 90s for the same resons and they ar right next to me and barely have a twint tip tail one that is almost like a k2 press

the prophet should be good for him, it skis like a non twin so he should not have to many problems. Hopefully he will enjoy them

thanks for all the input guys, but a lot of you are recommending very wide underfoot skis (compared to what he is used to riding) and i cant help but think no matter how great a ski with a 105 waist may be, he isnt going to be patient enough to give it time to get used to. Im gonna keep looking, and keep in mind whatever he gets doesnt HAVE to be twin tip.

I would really look at some proper all mountain skis, The rossi EXP series, salomon Enduro or maybe even sentinal, but thats prob a bit wide, maybe even the lord by salomon. The k2 amp skis could be good, even some of the scott skis like the CX or RC.

I would not look any bigger then 85-90 underfoot, anything bigger will be slow edge to edge and not be the best option. Try take him to an on mountain demo day and let him choose what he likes. Surley thats the best option.

Nail got it's head hit by this man right here.

I too would seriously look at the Rossi Experience line. If he's going to be running some powder as well, the 88 might be a great fit.

looked into it, have a friends dad with the experience 83s. but theres no way i can sell my dad into buying an 800$ ski. Even if he planned to ski more than he has ever before, i cant see him spending more than the prophet (550$) which seems pretty steep even. Im thinking about not telling him and just ordering some and paying 50/50 with my mom. cause its obveous he will love the skis to death, its just getting it to the door thats the problem. he would rather bust his knee on some retro straight 8 foot skis.
