so i jammed my thumb a week ago, it hurt really bad and got huge, so i went to the docs, took x rays and all that good stuff and she gave me a thumb brace, now its not broken, and it doesnt really hurt anymore, i still just cant bend it all the way, does this leave room for potential ligament damage?
anyone who has torn anything in there thumb, if you could comment, that would be greaaaaaaaaaaat thankkkkkks

well ive jammed my fingers a bunch over the past couple years and usually if your finger isnt broken but when you try to bend it it doesnt go all the way it means its sprained. Itll take like a week for the swelling to come down so that your finger can bend all the way again. its really no big deal just tape a popscicle stick to the sides of your thumb and itll be like a splint.

if you read what i was asking, it has nothing to do with "ways to avoid skiers thumb" idiot

I got the gnarliest case of skier's thumb imaginable, the ligament got pulled so hard that it tore out a chunk of the bone where it attaches to the thumb. Same thing, didn't really hurt unless I knocked it or tried to bend it (except at first obviously). Anyways, just got my cast off after about a month and a half, still can't really bend it back but I asked the doc about skiing and he said it's fine. He said if I fall on it again the same thing will happen, but it won't be worse. So in that sense, you probably don't have permanent ligament damage.

That being said, he told me my thumb would never have QUITE the same range of motion again, but that I probably wouldn't notice it. Not sure how serious your injury is but that might be the case for you, too, I'd ask your doctor. But yeah, skier's thumb is a relatively mild injury, I wouldn't worry about it.

I did the same thing as you, jammed it last spring, and it swelled up huge, I didn't have full movement of it for a couple weeks. Now, whenever I land on it, it feels like a fresh sprain and swells up a little and takes about 12-24 hours to get back to normal. It really sucks, but I don't think there's much to be done about it.

i did it to my left thumb back on nov. 23rd. had a cast put on for a month. landed on the same thumb last sunday. it swelled up again and turned black and blue and yellow. my doc said that the ligaments are now so screwed up that surgery would be the only way it will fully heal. not lookin forward to it.

Braces are the only thing that's worked for me. Tried a few, and finally found one that'll fit under a glove, doesn't interfere with my grip, and actually protects the joint well enough to prevent repeat injuries and/or aggravating existing injuries.

Made by a company called "Bauerfeind."

Model = "Rhizoloc."

List price is around $80, but you can usually find them for less using Nextag or another shop-bot.

Kind of expensive, but pays for itself by preventing additional doctor's visits, long term complications from repeat injury, etc.

i bent my thumb all the way back and tore all the ligaments and tendons in the space between my index finger and thumb and had to get like microsurgery and shit it sucked but i got full mobility back in it which was sick. just gotta rest it and ice it a ton maybe throw a little heat on it and itll be good

Thirded...I've broken my thumb twice, second time this happened. Both times I didn't think it was as bad as it was, but i wen to the doctor and found out it was broken... I lost a little range of motion in my left thumb, but nothing that i use on a day to day basis... I wear a brace in the park now and i got my doctor to mold it for me. it's a lot less intrusive than the big commercially available thumb braces and it fits under my glove... chances are that you just tweaked it though... that happens to everyone sometimes but if the pain stays for a few days and you get any sharp pain when you do something with it, go see a doctor.

be careful with it cause i jammed my finger once real bad and now my finger is permanetly damaged cause I kept playing footbal with it even though it swelled up real big. Maybe it wasn't just jammed tho, never got x-rays like u did.

Yeah, I was told I would almost definitely (90%+) need surgery, but they decided my body was healing it well enough on its own when they took the cast off. Lucky me. But yeah, apprently it will never be quite the same again. But I'm pretty good about the PT exercises they gave me for it, and according to my doctor my body is a beast at healing itself, so maybe I'll be OK...

What are the thumb braces from like Walgreens and stuff like? I got this molded plastic one from the orthopedist but it barely fits underneath my glove.

Last year I use to always get skiers thumb, like everytime I went to the mountain I would get it. Not bad but if I fell on a jump or rail or something my thumb would hurt really bad, swell a little, and jsut suck overall.

Then I went to my local surgical store and found these cheap tan thumbraces for like $30 each and I were those everytime I go skiing regardless and I haven't had a thumb injury since. I had to get new ones at the beginning of this year since the velcro wore out on the other ones and I will probably have to get new ones for next year but they have definitly saved my skiing. I have progressed so much not having to worry about my thumbs

Do they fit comfortably under gloves?

I've been keeping my hands out of the strap so if I start to fall I can drop my poles and ball up my hands, that's been helping but if I just didn't have to worry about it then that would be better for sure.

Yeah last year I got skiers thumb like 100000000000000000 times. I've been trying no poles recently and I haven't got it at all. I'm thinking about sticking with it because of the pain free skiing and not to mention the ease of getting grabs.
