The aim and "why" of Rastafarian faith

We must look to the almighty Jah, thank God who has raised man above all creatures and endowed him with reason and intelligence.

We must at all times put our trust and faith in Him and he will not desert us or permit us to destroy ourselves or humanity that He created in His image. We must examine ourselves and look deeply in our souls. We must become something we have never been before. We must become bigger that we have been, greater in spirit, more courageous, and larger in our outlook.

As His majesty said, we must overcome our petty prejudices, even if the weight of history is heavy, owing our ultimate dedication or allegiance not to any nation or country, but to our fellow men within the human community and become member of a new race, the true race: the human race.

What is Rastafari

Rastafari is a movement of black people who know Africa is the birthplace of mankind, all mankind. It is a twentieth century manifestation of God that enlightened our pathway towards righteousness and is therefore worthy of reverence.

Rastafari recognizes Africa as the central origin of religious history, culture, science and technology. Africa, symbolized in the scriptures by Ethiopia (I-thiopia) is an emotional magnet for many Africans, that is calling us home to the continent which our ancestors were taken by force from more than three hundred years ago, during slavery, the black holocaust.

That call has never been felt more deeply than by members of the Rastafari faith. Rastafari wants all people, especially black people, to know that we are Africans and to develop a sense of pride and integrity in ourselves, knowing that our heritage is of the noblest of mankind and that we are in fear of no man.

All people, especially Black people, are Africans and Africa is the birthplace of mankind. We must re-culture ourselves so we can have a sense of pride, in the turning from Occidental culture, and taking into ourselves the power of our African culture, which has been hidden from us for so long. As it is written, Africa awaits the creator and Rastafari.

See I and I selves as positive warriors in the battle for redemption and reconstruction of our mother continent. See I and I selves as Jah masons, who build and don't destroy like Babylon do..

To accomplish this, we cannot confront the occident with there armonition to win, our only hope is for us to use the mental power of our African culture to unite ourselves and overwhelm the negative aspects of Occidental culture where ever it impedes our progress and enlightenment. It doesn't mean that europeans or whites or any color are bad, as we are all Jah creatures, but people shall know that Babylon is going wrong and will deceive them.

Creating divisions, ie among races, is the rule of Babylon. So racism has nothing to do with Rastafari. "United we stand, divided we fall".

History and prophecy

The birth of the movement of Rastafari can be officially fixed in Ethiopia during the coronation of the prince Ras Tafari Makonnen (Haile Selassie) on November 2, 1930. This was no ordinary event in Jamaica because a year earlier Marcus Mossiah Garvey had a prophetic vision, seeing a king be crowned in Africa.

After the coronation of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I (Power of the Trinity), several individuals searched the Bible for confirmation and found it in the Psalms: "A Prince shall come out of Egypt, and Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hand unto Jah". The prophecy was fullfilled and these people were the first Rastafarians.

Apart from carrying the legal title "King of Kings, Lord of Lords, conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah" that is written in Revelations, Haile Selassie is the 225th descendant of King Salomon, son of David, and the Queen of Sheba.

Many times people have asked what proof does Rastafarians have to point to Haile Selassie as our Savior. Look at Revelations 5 verse 5, Revelations 19 verse 16, Revelations 22 verse 16 and Psalms 87:4, Ezekiel 30, Epistle to Timothy, Revelation 19, 22, Psalms 9,18, 68, 76,and Isaiah 9.

When HIM returned from exile, in 1941, further proof was found in Revelations17:14. It is written that “ They shall make war with the lamb, and the lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings and they that are with HIM are called and chosen and faithful”. So the Rastafarians of Jamaica must always be honored and praised as the vanguard of African resistance movement from which we must be entirely and eternally grateful.

The early Rastas come from the worst possible slum which no one could ever imagine were often beaten, harassed, and imprisoned. The movement went through a relatively peaceful time maybe during the 1930’s or 40’s. But in the 1950’s and towards the ’70s the movement faced continuous and increased prosecution and harassment from the middle and upper class of Jamaica society and was regarded as an outcast. They in turn regard the society as Babylon, which is evil. It is the oppressor and not their home, but a place where they were captive, and until they return to Africa there will be no peace. They were also discriminated against by fellow Jamaicans and constantly arassed by the police and attacked by the media. The movement at this time was also growing in small numbers across the Caribbean, U.S. and especially in England. The Black Power Protest in the U.S.A. in the 1960’s also strengthened the movement. Because of it’s dynamic nature of the movement the belief and the language vary from group to group and from area to area. By the mid1970’s however, the movement took a dramatic turn with the rise of reggae and his most famous representative Bob Marley

Nowadays, many people accept Rastafari, but some are afraid to really project it in their own way because of what society teaches. And some of them through struggles allow themselves to become what they are.

The Rasta worship and Symbols

Like any spirituality, Rasta has its own traditions and symbols:

Dreadlocks: they have several meanings. First, they are a part of the biblical Nazarene vow, who prohibits to shave and comb the hair. (But it is not the dreadlocks who makes someone a rastaman, and some Rastas don't wear dreadlocks).

The locks, because of their appearance, symbolizes the roots of the man, and his spirituality, the link with Jah. As Marcus Garvey said, "a man without knowing of his past is like a tree without roots". They can also be seen as a symbol of the Lion, Haile Selassie I.

The Ganja, "healing of the nations', also known as hemp, cannabis, or marijuana, is used as a holy sacrament by Rastas in many ways. The legend says that the Holy Herb was found growing on the King Solomon's grave.

Use of herb has his source in the Bible: "Thou shalt eat the herb of the field." (Genesis 3:18), "eat every herb of the land." (Exodus 10:12), "Better is a dinner of herb where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred there with." (Proverbs 15:17), "He causeth the grass for the cattle, and herb for the service of man." (Psalms 104:14)

Rastas smoke herb to meditate, symbolizing the burning bush, and for his curative properties (ie asthma). Herb can be eaten or infused. His seeds are very nutrious. Hemp is also used to make clothes, shoes and ropes.

Rasta flag: The red, yellow, green are the colors of the Rasta flag. The red symbolizes the blood of black people, the yellow the stolen gold and the green the lost lands of Africa.

The Rasta flag can also be seen during coptic celebration in the motherland Ethiopia. These colors are too on the senegalese flag, from where thousand of slaves were deported, transiting by the Goree island.

The star of David: The star of David is the symbol of the linkage between HIM Haile Selassie and David. When HIM make the Solomon seal with his hands, you can see that it looks like the star of david. Also, the Rasta consider themselves like the Israelites in exile in Babylon. The star of David is the symbol of Israel.

The Conquering Lion and the Lamb: they both symbolize HIM Haile Selassie according to the Revelations and the opening of the seven seals. They are two faces of a same reality, the Alpha and Omega.

Rasta is Just truth in this time. RastafarI is God. Haile Sellassie, meaning 'power of the trinity' the lamb, Jesus said he would come again as the King of Kings, but with a new name, as the lamb of God. Dont let babylon decieve you!! 1930 His Majesty was crowned King of Kings Lord of Lords of the conquering tribe of Judah. Ras Tafari, meaning Prince Tafari, is the last king of an unbroken line of kings that stretches all the wayy back to Solomon and queen of Sheeba, beautiful Makeda, over three thousand years ago.

Thats cool that you are educated and devout in this religion but why pt this rediculously long piece that doesn't concisely explain the basics of Rastifariansim for those of us who have no idea what it is?

NBC know that God is not partial, and would never judge with partiality. So if a Rastaman is truly righteous in his works than he would do as God do. Rasta is God for all the people!!

I myself am an Atheist and don't believe there is a higher power, and therefore don't believe any of the other crap. BUT I do appreciate that Rasta encourages peace and acceptance and everybody to find truth for themselves instead of just swallowing what everyone is feeding you. Or encouragin bigotry and prejudice towards those that don't share your belief.

so good for you!

I agree with chris, I am generally not fond of religion, at least some religions. I get sick and tired of christians being basically car salesmen trying to sell me shit. Nothing against it at all, they just go about it the wrong way, and thats horrible.

we are not stewards to god's creation. I have heard from someone that the meaning of life is "the glory of god"... sorry, that is not a meaning of life. That is just a sad emptiness.

Much respect for rastafari though. Acceptance and love and all that good stuff.

Muteman, I send love. But you and all people need to here of Rastafari so the truth can go to them. We are living in very serious times and we as humans need do go deeper within to know the roots; I mean what is a tree without roots? nothing, so what is a man without knowing his roots? hes dying. A Raata must know only livity in this time. Judgement is hotter than ever, with sunamis, earthquakes, and ecspecialy hurricanes taking trales of slave ships. So leave the judgement up to HIM His Imperial Majesty, and dont be so quick to judge one another. The Rasta commune from the youth to the elder from the black Rasta to the white Rasta, they sending only One Love.

BRIT the glory of god rests within you, your free will to be able to stay connected with the source of all energy and glorify his good works through you. as for christmas, a Rasta doesn't celebrate chritmas, it is just time that keeps passing the sun comes up the sun goes down eveyday. Christmas is a babylon distraction

true, but why must you label something you stand for? why must it have a name? why must it be a specific set of standards and practices and traditions and rituals? there cannot be ONE truth, one way.

one quick question off topic, what does rastafari say about animals? in other words, are they any different from humans? do they have souls? Are humans in ANY way superior to other species? are we inferior? (I ask this because of some rather infuriating things i've heard from christians on the subject)

one other quick question, are you black?

"that is calling us home to the continent which our ancestors were taken by force from more than three hundred years ago, during slavery, the black holocaust."

My ancestors were not taken from africa 300 years ago. They were cattle farmers in northern sweden, uff da.

I believe in something other than ourselves that watch over this planet, but it doesn't have a name. It's just a higher conciousness than our own, and we are unable to comprehend it until we pass on. to say that we have all the answers because of something we read is bullshit. the beauty of spirituality is that you are left with your own ideas about what you will encounter once you pass on. i believe that god, buddha, selassie, krishna, and allah all refer to the same being, and it's a matter of faith as to which one you believe. which one do you feel most comfortable residing with the rest of your spiritual life?

if you couldn't tell, i'm more a philosopher that an evangalist. that is, i believe in the love of wisdom({what philosophy is,} philo=the love of / sophia=wisdom, knowledge) more than a pre-concieved idea of what is. if you're allowed to make your own conclusions as to what happens when you pass on, and who watches over you, then it allows more personal growth. Life should not be spent worrying about what might happen is you do something wrong. if you wish it to be, it's all about the quality of your personal life, rather that trying to live by the standards of someone else.

also, to a philosopher, to say that selassie, buddah, jesus, krishna or allah has the answers to all of our questions is the same as abandoning the search before it begins. i'll use a fishing analogy here, because it relates. If the soul were a fish, and you were a first time fisherman, and you caught a whopper of a fish, it would have to be so easily duped and utterly unelusive that it wouldn't be worth catching in the first place. how easily should a thing as wonderful as the soul be caught, and thrown into your hands? anything worth finding and having takes time and skill to obtain.

wow this is all really interesting to read. its a good change from other talk you hear going on on ns sometimes. I would consider myself under the umbrella of "Christianity". I don't think i really go about it as a car salesman does, trying to "sell" christianity to as many people as possible, but i certainly do encourage it to those I love. I mean, why not try and spread what you know and love to someone else that you care for? Also, I dunno, the label of "Christianity" is just that, a label. The real root of Christianity is not trying to convert people, it's about you and God. I dont necessarily agree with the label of Christianity just because nowadays it has turned into a term to mean church politics, and rituals. The label of being "Christian" has changed a bit over the years, its not supposed to be all about tithing, going to church every sunday or praying and reading the bible EVERY day, its about your relationship with God. Period. I respect everyone's view on this though, and I do agree with Jonesy to a point, when he goes into the whole philosophical point of view.

And Sean, what did a "christian" person say to you about animals? that they wouldnt go to heaven or something?...also to partially answer your question about animal, i think in the beginning of RastaT's thread, it says that humans were raised above animals because we were 'endowed with reason and intelligence' so i guess that would mean that we are superior?

yeah, and thats what makes me so angry.

sorry, I don't mean to sound so opinionated here, I really have no say in this kind of stuff, cause I am SO uneducated on all of it. I tend to sound like I have very extreme opinions, I don't, so don't ever take any offense from anything I say.

But back to animals. To say that they don't have reason and intelligence is just SUCH bullshit. And it wasn't said to me, it was actually a friend of Kevin's that said it. But they said exactly that, that animals were just part of the earth, part of gods creation, and were nothing more than that. She made it sound like they were there for our convenience, almost as though they're just tools for our use. Humans are NO different than any other form of life on the planet, be it an ape, a slug, or a flower.

whoops, didn't mean to list selassie as a deity. i guess jah would be the appropriate one. i gotta stop posting when i'm wasted.

I love the people that try to tell me I'm ignorant because I don't have blind faith in god.

They are o so smart

Rasta means to live within nature, to see the creator in the wind, sea and storm. In the past other religions pointed to the sky, yet those very same people were living a hypocracy; they took their land and gold, they took the people and used them as tools for their own selfish gain & power. If there is no enemy within, enemies on the ouside can do us no harm.

When I say enemies I meen those selfish enough to disregard others for there own morality and personal gain. Enemies want to fight Rasta, want truth from Rasta, but its alredy there within! You can not be looking outside youself.

Brit dont get frustrated over something like this. Be free like the bird and bees, be like the tree planted by the rivers of water and love the waters that quench.

THe ideals of Rastafiamsim are good values to have jsut liek Budhist values. I defintley agree about those things. Who is the "god" you speak of?

The enimie is just the one who waits to be offended, waiting for a situation to feed there ego. They might not know they are consiously doing so but, there frustration takes over and those negative vibes close off the mind and nothing will change there perception at that time. You see this far to offten in the foolish polatics.

"Rastafari recognizes Africa as the central origin of religious history, culture, science and technology."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

AHAHAHAHAHAHA, oh shit, thats a good one

you fuckin rastas.

i dont think there is a higher power either. i want scientific proof that there is someone, something, somewhere making crazy shit happen...im just one of those kinds of people, yet i have no disrespect for people who believe in god. im my mind, the higher power is nature...our survival depends on it.

Your pride rests in your culture, and this babylon culure is building up an ignorant race of people. So just try to lose your pride in America, because America is a Hipocracy not a democracy. 'United we stand' a hipocritical satement for sure. 'One nation under God', Hipocritical. The truth is in Ethiopia, Africa. One God, One Aim, One Destiny for all of Gods children. Remember all RIGHTEOUS roads are an expression of one final destination. Blessed Love.

snowsnowsnow, there is proof all around you!!! LIFE itself is proof of the fathers creation, a cycling energy that cant be stoped. In this time Mother nature; one of our greatest teachers, has been coughing all over us for the past few years. Are we just due for some natural disasters? Well yes, but thats because the higher power that you say you need to see is angry with what he see. Judgement day comes closer with every second, and every second comes another choice, what are you going to choose. Do good works not just for the higher power, not just for yourself, but for the future, the youths!!

^ yes, parise be to Allah, I mean the great Canabis, he keeps us high and bakes are brains, BEHOLD THE GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JAMACIA AND ETHIOPIA!!!

Ethiopia is the greatest nation in the world, the people live for God in return they get the light, the Love. While all these other nations fight for the rule of international morality, which is just an illusion being persued and will never be attained. The I-thiopians have patience in this time, living off the land, the seasons, the love of there families and children, and with the light of Jah with them always.

Ski Hobo, again I only send Love, But u are exactly like the enemy. The ones who cant agree to disagree. trying just to feed an ego that really isnt yourself.

damn, i never really have read anything about rastafarism before this and i gotta say, those are some interesting ideas. it's close to describing the way i think, but not quite. i think is that it's up to the individual to determine what is "truth". it's all a matter of faith, and mine lies in nature. people who believe in god and other deities of that nature aren't wrong, that's just where their faith lies. for the most part, we all follow what our family has taught us. the bible and the korran and books of that sort all have good lessons to live by. and that's all it should be, just a guide. the way they use the bible now has become a sort of scare tactic if you will. and how much blood has been spilled in the name of religion? in my opinion, organized religion is corrupted. why should you have to give communion to feel spiritual? all that they need lies in the bible.

seeking out the truth for yourself is much more rewarding than paying for it.

this one is where you start to lose me.

Find the truth yourself? great

be at peace with the world and your brothers? awesome

Believe that some recent ethiopian king is the second human manifestation of god or go to hell? fuck off

oh yeah, I bet the ethiopians are real content, starving and all while skeleton children eat cow shit.

If Ethiopia is the cradle of Rasta, then Rasta can die.

Chris, in time you will know. Ethiopia is the only counry that hasnt been colonized by another country, Ras Tafari crowned His Majesty in unbroken line of Kings that stretches back before Christ, to Solomon and Mekeda, and before this to the seed of Jacob, which both Jesus and Rastafari came from. Jesus of Israel(Jeruslem) is the son, the first zion. But before in the begining the Isrialites lost their faith and began worshiping false gods, and began to inter-marry against gods Will. So by the Will of God Makeda queen of Ethiopia, sought the wisdom of King Solomon in Israel, they conceieved a child Bayna Lehkem Menelik, soon to be called King David. King David would be the one to fullfil prophecy, to bring the Tabernacle of the Law of God to Ethiopia.

The star of David is the sign of 'Israel' what most religions have come to belive is the holy land, it was once a solified unified nation. But Ethiopia is Truth.

Its only love, no one should question the faith of others, no human being can judge the ways of God. In the past I wanted to change the world, but came to realize that the only thing one can be sure of changing is ones self
