Ray Kurzweil - By 2045, Humans will live forever

Hopefully this hasn't been posted. First heard about Ray and his revolutionary theory 3 months ago when Rolling Stone Magazine interviewed him. Basically, by 2045, computers will surpass us in intelligence, the universe itself will become conscious, and humans will live forever.

Why believe a guy like this? Straight from the article:

Over the past four decades, Ray Kurzweil has established himself as one of the world's most prolific and influential inventors... who has been called the rightful heir to Thomas Edison.

Here's a link to the article:

Interesting. 2045 is not that far away. And he's popping a ridiculous amount of pills to make it to 2045.

That's definitely interesting, but how many times have people predicted this crazy future? In the 1950s they thought we would have flying cars, and now 50+ years later people are still cruising around in cars from the 1950s....So I'm skeptical at best, but hey prove me wrong.

Might help if you read the article...

"For his contributions to artificial intelligence, Kurzweil has been enshrined in the Inventors Hall of Fame and has received White House honors from three presidents - including the highest prize in his field,

the National Medal of Technology."

I was alright with the whole thing until he started talking about bringing back his dead father, that just seems like crazy talk. Even if he could, why would he?

Seams depressing that this man is looking forward to the day when human intelligence and diversity will be altered by tiny computers.

Do we even really want this? I'm pretty sure I would run out of things to do if I lived every day. Also I wouldn't want computers being smarter than us. That could bring Terminator shit upon us.

Don't take it from Rolling Stone. Ray Kurzweil is a serious scientist and has written real works about this...Check out "The Singularity is Near".

Great article. It's funny how you never hear about the inventors of technology you see and use every day.

I had a multimedia class last semester and I had a professor that always talked about Kurzweil and was even a large part of my final. Crazy Shit.

Great book, very tedious though, tooke me like 3 monts of on off reading and a lot of re-reading and looking shit up. Very optimistic, if you dont read a lot I would start out with some Kaku.

in the words of some one, from some film - "what ever was created by humans can be taken apart by humans" i dont think AI of that level will evr be created to a mass level

Have you ever read any of the Ender series? He has an idea for AI that I think is much more likely than us ever making artificial inteligence. Basically the internet "spawns" an AI that exists with in the internet. Think about it, it could have already happened, it just hasnt revealed itself yet.

Robots are not going to take over the world and enslave the human race, that is not the point. The point is physical biological evolution is coming to an end, humans have basically mastered what a body has to do to thrive on this planet. If you take a step back however, physical biological evolution is only part of it, the other part being evolution of the storage of data and how efficiently we are able to access that data. The Singularity and what Kurzweil is talking about is how this part of evolution is about to explode in growth again leading to a point where human intelligence is not discernible from artificial intelligence.

Right now computers can calculate information faster than any human can, though computers can not do this without human input, which seriously limits computers capabilities, but once they get the "human element" or what ever you like to call it, they will gain that extra step in knowledge that allows humans to interpret their thought like no other intelligent creature or computer that we know of. Basically we will be able to manufacture unlimited storage of data making it feasible for everyone to literally know everything that is known at the time, were already on our way if you think about things such as the internet, specifically Wikipedia.

I dont think this is scary at all, rather im am very excited and happy im living in a time where i can witness the beginning of this shift.

kind of, computers and the human brain operate very differently. However most estimates put the most powerful super computer some where on the level of a field mouse. Computers are not as fast as the human brain, computers are very good at data storage and mathmatics because of the way they process data, the human brain never evolved this function because it was not necessary.

Pretty soon we are going to hit the .01 barrier which is the smallest we can build current computers, then we will have to design another type of computer and another revolution similar to the computer revolution will take place.

so everyone should quit skiing now, play it safe and not die before 2045. then live the rest of your life as badass as possible.
but seriously, living forever would fuck up everything humans have achieved intheir time on earth. resources will decrease faster than ever, and the government would take hold of the technology so that only those of importance would be allowed the technology. i can only imagine the conflicts of this.

lol @ Rolling Stone.

Maybe it will happen sometime, not this soon though. We have reached a point where we can convert a skin cell back into a stem cell, and then use that to grow any organ or body part needed. Its not un-imaginable that we would just be able to simply replace an organ as it begins to slow down with a brand new one.

hasnt the matrix, irobot and terminator taught us anything? why even build complex AI robots if singularity is a possibility....

There were some robots programed with limited rules, like always move in the x direction. Then they were started out with random leg movements with the goal of optimizing speed in the x direction. After a couple of hours of random movement the robot "learned" how to walk very well. I dont really feel like telling you anymore because I feel like you are not willing to learn and just want to argue. If you actually want to learn read one of Kurzweil's or any of the other highly inteligent futurist authors.

Jesus fucking Christ, I know its cliché to say on the internet, but read a fucking book.

Your stubborn stupidity offends me and people who have put in the time to learn about the subject before making ignorant statements.

This article reminded me of a guy from my town who is frozen down in Texas: good ole' cryogenics charing 50k a year!
