Rant About Whatever

The big problem is there are no good jobs in a lot of rural areas. So you’re pigeonholing yourself into one job that could potentially go south. It’s why a lot of people move to cities now.

Ok here’s my take on the whole “young people are lazy” debate, I’m 30

first of all, the “boomers had it so easy” argument is a bit misleading. If you were a white guy, yeah it was easy. But I know very few women in their 60s who had lifelong high paying careers. And those who have divorced often seem to be struggling financially. Economic times were certainly good back then, but not necessarily for everybody.

young people have always been called lazy, people said it about boomers back then, then it was millennials, now I listen to millennials shit on gen z. That will never change. There have always been hard workers and lazy people in every generation.

what I think has changed is the type of work people are willing to do. When I worked in masonry, almost all of my coworkers of various ages were homeowners. There are really high paying welding and pipe fitting jobs out there. The problem is these jobs aren’t “fun” and often require you to live in the middle of nowhere. Go drive to some sleepy rural town. Who lives there? Boomers. And they didn’t move there for fun, they moved there for cheap real estate and a good job.

so why aren’t young people making this sacrifice? I think there are 2 reasons. One is that boomers all taught us that we should “follow our dreams!” And “do something fun!” You can absolutely do that, but most fun jobs people are willing to do for lower pay, so if you want to make it you have to work harder. I have a really fun job that I love, but the pay is low so I often work 60 hours a week. That’s the sacrifice you have to make. If you want to work 40 hours or less, be prepared to do some shitty, not fun work. the other reason is the 2008 financial crisis. When the first millennials were entering the job market, the jobs weren’t there, and that has kind of set the tone. It’s gotten better now cause the boomers are finally retiring, but at this point a lot of young people haven’t even considered working in the trades or manufacturing. These jobs are out there!

what’s really fucking up young people now is the cost of day to day things like housing and transportation. Cars and houses are so unaffordable. Housing would probably be cheaper if more people went into the trades, which would drive down labor costs. Cars are too expensive cause car companies like making money, that’s just capitalist greed pure and simple. Toyota makes a bare bones tundra that costs like 15k, it’s just not available in the us/Canada.

TLDR all our problems will be solved if we build a bunch of electric trains and cheap housing

Varies a lot from area to area but I’ve found that there are plenty of good jobs in rural Maine, demand for workers is extremely high, and living expenses are tiny compared to cities. Not to mention real estate is way cheaper. I get the pigeonholing argument, lots of mills have shut down here, but when they were running my boss was working an entry level job and making 500 bucks a week IN 1980. His dad worked at the same mill for over 30 years. There are still mills in operation and I bet the pay is pretty damn good. There’s also the ironworks in bath, those guys make a good amount of money and they’re rock solid union jobs, and I doubt the USA is going to stop building warships anytime soon lol. I know a few people near the farm I work at who work in merchant marine, all homeowners with nice trucks etc. If your definition of a good job is a desk job then yeah, you need to move to a city, but it’s not like there is no money to be made in rural areas.

Yeah maybe in rural Maine but not many places and your boss making $500/week in 1980 plays into my next point. Back in the day, these jobs allowed people to support their families. My definition of a good job is not a desk job. It’s one in which someone can support themselves.

I see people I know scramble when they lose a job in places like Grand Junction. And that’s not even that small. I also see it all the time in rural South Carolina. Wages are better in the north (as a whole). It’s why many northerners move south because their purchasing power is just so much stronger. Cheaper wages usually equals cheaper real estate/LCOL. So southerners get priced out and beat by northerners when they bid on houses because they simply don’t have the cash. They complain about Californians doing the same in Colorado. You run the risk of that same issue down the line in a LCOL area where you’ve filled a need. Real estate moves fast nowadays.

So then we go down the rabbit hole if you’re in a LCOL area and, yeah, maybe pay is good for there but what happens if the mill, shop, etc. closes down? What if you then need to commute, move, etc.?

I get what you’re saying and I wish it was that easy, but I just think it’s more of a gamble in rural areas. You’re tied down by real estate and geographic location trying to fill a spot which means the town itself is probably depressed if they’re struggling to attract workers.

It’s simply statistics and a density thing. Jobs and opportunity are going to be easier to come by in a city just purely based on density.

Idk about Bath iron works specifically, but the issue with so many of those union jobs is that the union won't let just anybody in. They create artificial scarcity to keep their wages up. So if your dad was in the union, you're set, but otherwise you're fucked.

This doesn't specifically apply to you, but I really take issue with the modern American left simping over union labor and insisting that all of these government infrastructure projects be done by union workers. Unions are political organizations and they're inherently inefficient in order to protect themselves. Instead of subsidizing electric cars built by the autoworkers union (which Biden did) why don't we support any business that's providing fair pay and benefits

My other old man rant is the hand writing of college kids right now is straight pathetic. Like I have never hand good handwriting but I can address an envelope and it gets through the mail. The trip reports filled out by seasonal staff are straight up impossible to read. We also sometime have students on extended trips do a letter to themselves thing during their experience and I have to redo the addresses on the envelopes of half of them because they don’t know how to format an address let alone write it legibly.

highkey the only good thing my AP Lit 12 teacher has ever done was require everything in the course be hand written and introduce me to Camus

Yes, because having me sleep over, stay till 1am, meeting my family, taking me to your boujee private school prom, going on dates, spending 3-4 days a week together for three weeks straight, taking my sister out shopping and telling me all about how you love her and my mom, then telling me i’m invited to costa rica with you is just casual enough to ghost me. will never understand why this happens with every girl i’ve ever talked to. Can’t believe i’m right back here again.

Painting unions in broad stokes like this is so stupid dude, some of them are good and others are bad

I think mill jobs still pay pretty damn well, and I know lots of people who have blue collar jobs that support themselves just fine, like 3 kids single earner family type deals.

I was reminded today why I never go to Target or Walmart. Just wanted to buy a carpet cleaner because my carpets are starting to smell like piss from new dog not understanding the concept of going outside to piss yet.

Target website said they had one in stock of the one I wanted so I drove there. Upon getting there I only see the display one. Ask somebody about it, and apparently 1 in stock means the display unit but they can't sell it because it doesn't actually work (I am very skeptical of this). Guy apologies for the inconvenience, it's whatever and I leave.

Check walmarts website which is the opposite direction I went for Target and see that they have what I believe is the same model just rebranded for Walmart in stock. I go there and once again only see the display unit. Ask somebody and they say they must be out of them. I go to customer service and they tell me they have 2 in the back, but they can't get ahold of any employees to get it for me and that department is ignoring their pages. Person from that department happens to be walking by so they stop them and explain what they need and the person says that it will be a huge hassle for her to get and tells me to order it online and then come back when it's ready. What the fuck. Thankfully Walmart is only 10 minutes away but holy shit I was expecting some level of competency from their customer service, my mistake.

Anyway, here are the two reasons my carpet smells like piss.

I do not enjoy hot beach vacations. Northerly people are not built for it. My wife spent way too much vacation time on this and I have to watch the kids for 9 days straight but the heat and humidity makes me need a nap so bad but that’s not an option with kids so I’m dead tired, grumpy, and I’m fucking fried from a couple hours on the beach on day one but my wife and I got in a fight because she said spending the extra $3 on a sunscreen was a waste of money (on a trip that’s costing $4,000) make shit fucking make sense

that part is hysterical. people who don't use sunscreen (or worse, are actively against it) are crazy

That's exactly my point. People simp on union labor as a whole without regard for what each specific union actually does.

All unions are economically inefficient though. They're inherently protectionist and so they increase friction in the economy. This can be a net good when it keeps skilled labor employed during temporary downturns or outright bad when it artificially limits the supply of labor and bottlenecks an industry.

update. she texted my sister and said how being around me and my family was too much for her in like a good way(she has gay parents who are divorced). Apparently she was sorry about not seeing my sisters track meet but couldn’t say anything to me or answer any texts.

Seemed like a sort of selfsabotage thing the way she explained it to my sister, she didn’t think she deserved us. Very odd and even more upsetting she couldn’t tell me, but happy she atleast gave my sister a little closure. Esp since my sister said “Emily’s special she talks to me”. Sorta ok sorta not with it but life moves on. Holy situation ship to start summer with

wow that sucks. her family is so fucked up that the concept of a normal family with father mother son and daughter is too much to handle. I feel really bad for her. hopefully she gets help but she never had the childhood she deserved.

I loath people who are in multi hundred people meetings and feel the need to post I CANT HEAR YOU into the chat.

The other 476 people haven't complained Becky, and you just joined the meeting 20 minutes late........Maybe do some trouble shooting and turn your fucking volume up before distracting the speaker and having 25 people say I can hear fine before the speaker continues on.
