That’s how hard their body was fighting for air. Or the time I held a phone up to a patients ear while they said their goodbyes to their family who stood on the other side of the window. Or the multiple times I had to stuff dead bodies with alcohol soaked wash cloths and wrap a plastic bag around their heads so the funeral home staff was safe. It was fucking gruesome and I thought I was past it but then was asked about it and evidently it’s still in there. Watching patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia visit family though glass windows or doors, thinking they were in fucking prison, because they didn’t understand what was going on. Then to have to call family members and tell them to get here ASAP but also trying not to scare them. Hearing a doctor tell a patient “this is the end of the road. You’re probably going to die in a day or two” and have that patient beg and plead for a Covid vaccine. Life is so fucking fragile and people constantly take it for granted. I can’t get this out of my head. Please FFS don’t ask first responders/healthcare workers about the most fucked up shit they’ve seen. If they bring it up themselves, fine. But as innocent as the question is, it’s just not something we want to answer or want to relive. It’s been a week since being asked and the memories are still floating around in the front of my mind and I can’t shut it off.

showed up to school today at 7:00 am for an exam, missed rowing for it. Went to my exam room and sat down, kinda weird no one was in it and there was barely any cars in the lot. After about 15 minutes a teacher came in and asked me what i was doing and i found out i wasted my fucking morning. it’s tomorrow god dammit

My mom took her car in for an inspection and dude gave her a safety rejection sticker for not having working indicators.
Checked her car out last night and the clown failed her because the factory reflectors on the fenders that never had bulbs to begin with. Dealing with car shit sucks for women.

Im slightly regretting my decision to pursue emergency medicine as a career path because I am neck-deep in shit right now and way over my head. It's all so fast and too quick and my ADD brain can't focus sometimes, with or without meds.

It is absolutely disgusting that there's a growing handful of states who are enacting harsher penalties on people who call 911 for overdoses. People are literally being charged with first degree murder. What the actual fuck.
By that logic, every state prison official should be charged for allowing facilitation of drugs throughout the prison systems. But ohhhh no we won't talk about how bad they are about stopping smuggling or corruption. Let's just target the addicts. This is probably the worst policy since the beginning of the war on drugs.

Thing for me is the volume of overdose calls (who are often repeat callers) will inevitably affect response times for other emergencies. Here in Seattle we had five THOUSAND overdose calls in 2022. Imagine your grandma is having a heart attack but EMS is tied up giving narcan to someone for the 5th time. There are cases where they had to narcan the same person multiple times in a single day. It's ridiculous.
At some point you have to start laying down some sort of penalties for people that are taking that amount of time from first responders. Especially when you can get your own narcan covertly and for free in many places. Shit I got mine from a local coffee shop.
It's just a bummer situation all around. I don't think prosecution should be the first approach but with the opioid epidemic showing no signs of stopping the strain on emergency services is only going to get worse. Sucks

For the most part, its been a challenging-yet-educational experience for me and I think it would look good on a resume if I ever were wanting to go back into the field as an actual EMT/AEMT/Medic someday and get back into patrolling. I weirdly enjoy placing IV's and drawing blood, assisting with procedures, etc,. more of the hands on stuff vs. the charting and documentation. The charting stuff is really fucking hard for an ADD brain like mine when you have a million things being shouted at you and its easy to get swamped and behind on the charting which forces you to spend an hour or so back-charting everything and you leave your nurse team undermanned and overpowered at times....Also staffing has been difficult this weekend.
I wanna get my AEMT and maybe eventually Paramedic cert and go pre-hospital again because I really enjoyed ski patrolling and also want to check out the fire service someday. I'd love to roll around in an engine or on a medic rig. I also have a million other things im dealing with outside of work like trying to find housing before the summer is over and trying to get back into therapy and cut back on drinking and shit
