Rant about the seriousness of skiing

I started a thread yesterday about pushy parents and it turned into a debate of what stretches you should do before skiing (wtf?) Have you even been to a skatepark and seen people doing stretches? Skiing to me isn't a serious sport like football or whatever, its a chilled sport like skating, just my opinion.

Stretch to avoid injuries, man. Staying flexible doesn't make you a super serious skier.

Im not saying don't stretch, I just think its ridiculous that people are arguing over what stretches to do for skiing, people need to chill out.

Seriousness about injuries and pain doesn't mean "taking skiing too serious". I don't understand your point at all. Skiing is a fast sport with many opportunities to hurt yourself, if you can minimize that by warming up and stretching - why not?

It starts with discussions on stretches and before you know it skiing is gonna turn into a sport filled with intense workouts and butch athletes on steroids, just ski.

arguing like that is an issue with newschoolers, not skiing. its still just as chill as it has always been.

and stretching is definitely a good idea. i always do it at the mountain and at the skate park.

You boys get to your 30's and you will stretch the fuck out every day if your into sports. Yoga is meant to be the shit if you have the time to commit.

Too late bro.

Also, I didn't read the other thread, so I'm not sure how crazy people were getting (it was probably pretty crazy) but stretching is a simple toll fee for avoiding injuries that mean skiing less. I never used to stretch, but when I hit about 24 I noticed that smaller falls were taking a larger toll, so I simply stretch a little as I'm putting my gear on now.

Stretching, and having a good level of fitness can only make your skiing better, and more enjoyable. I remember seeing Pollard get off the Palmer lift on an early winter day after T-line got it's first snow of the season. First thing he did was spend a few minutes stretching.

Right, but for some it is. And for people who are training all day long, stretching, and doing the right stretches, is super important.

i wouldn't worry about skiing getting too serious. there will always be a solid base of people who take it easy and chill.

As many have stated, stretching is not something that makes any sport super serious. Stretches reduce your chance of injury regardless of what your doing. If you go ask your doctor if you should stretch every morning after you get out of bed, he will say yes. Its healthy for you.

Another thing too, I have a few friends who always bitch about not being able to do certain grabs (mainly truck drivers and nose grabs) and its because they never stretch for anything ever. I am in worse physical condition than pretty much all of them and I can almost do a full split because I stretch before any activity, regardless of the level of intensity. OPs argument that skiing is not an intense sport is also completely wrong. Skiing has a very high level of injury BEFORE you start taking park skiing into account, afterwards its down right dangerous.

All you youngins will understand stretching once you get to about 20 or so, especially if you end up injured at some point.

Your joking right? Park and Pipe is now in the Olympics. How much more serious does it get? Do you really think that the top pros don't train year round with straighten training, cardio and stretching? This is now the real deal and for every kid that thinks this is just fun there are 5 more that will put in the time and effort to make it to the next level. If you don't want that and are cool with just skiing every now and then, good for you. But for the guys and gals that are serious about taking this shit to the next level or you just don't want to pull a mussel, stretch, train and keep in shape. When did stretching turn you into a pussy?

while skiing might not be "football or whatever", people get injured all the time. Stretching and strengthening key parts of your body can prevent those injuries. All of those park skiers you whack it to stretch before big comps, and a lot of them have full workouts in the offseason. But if you think stretching isn' t "chill" enough, enjoy the acl tear.

Just six randomised controlled trials have been conducted on the prevention of injuries, some with the general public, others with members of the armed forces undergoing training. Overall there was no difference in the number of leg injuries sustained in those who did or did not stretch.

He said if you enjoy stretching then it’s fine to carry on and it will do you no harm, but that taking all the evidence into account, it probably won’t help much. I was glad to see he puts his evidence-base results into practice in his own life. When I interviewed him from a studio in Sydney he had just come from playing football. Had he stretched beforehand? No.

Again, I never stretch!

When I went to MHSSC a bunch of racers had to wake up half an hour earlier than everyone else and do their stretches in the rain.

It was pretty hilarious.

Static stretch without warming up, is currently considered unhealthy because you increase the risk of tearing something. So they recommend dynamic stretching, which you still have to be careful with because if you go too hard, then you'll pull something. Doesn't matter anyway, because every week they change their minds about what's healthy and what isn't.

The fact you made a thread about it is pretty hypocritical, you're taking their opinion too seriously, why do you care?

he takes being chill very seriously. if you're not putting effort into not putting any effort into skiing, you're not really skiing.

I hevent seen the thread, but there are a lot of stretches that have shown to be bad for you and lots of people still do them.

I stretch before skiing and skating.

I always stretch before I ski and probably about 50% of the time before I blade. It's more important to stretch before I ski because I will have been driving a car for at least an hour, sometimes three. If you don't stretch your legs at least a little you're just asking for injuries.

Being serious about being serious is seriously serious ... take note and hopefully the serious skiing world will not cave in on itself.
