Rail question

I built a rail out of a stop sign post and I try ridding it by steping on it. I couldn't slide on it very well. My ski are waxed but it still doesn't work. What should I do?

If I'm not mistaken, Signposts for stopsigns are zinc coated, Take a file and shave off the dull metal covering on it, then get a candle and rub it up and down the rail.
