I was looking at buying one and was wondering if anyone on NS has one in their car and if so how does it work?
 
i had a police scanner but i could never make it work. it was disappointing.

IMO a radar detector isnt worth it since 90% of the times ill get pulled over is for non-speeding things, so maybe if youre always on the highway or w.e, but its kind of rare that this would help you

 
i have a cobra one and it works pretty good, even though i just got a $140 speeding ticket yesterday cause i didn't have it on. But I've heard escort/passport are the best ones. I think they are worth it mine picks up cops all the time however it only works if the cop is running radar so they're not 100% foolproof. just don't drive like a douchebag like me
 
they are great! i have a passport^ and its been a life saver for me many of times, if you have the money i would definitely suggest getting one
 
This. If you want one that works you have to pay. I have had a ghetto cobra one and it sucked picked up everything besides well hidden cops and it's range sucked. Got a valentine and it's a serious piece of equipment worth every dollar

I've been looking into this since I'll be on the highway a lot this summer and am on it a lot already with Mammoth trips. I've got some extra cash but hate spending it. If I got one it would probably be a Valentine 1. Worth it or am I better off risking it?
 
Dont get a Cobra, those things are fuckin junk and can set off other people that have scanners near you. get and Escourt 9500 i think its called.
 
i had one up until recently it cost me like 150. Thing worked fine. They don't make you ticket proof. There there more as a second help to not getting tickets. Saved my ass tons of times. I mean yea 85% of the time you be fine but theres always the chance they get you when it goes off. Definatly pick one up, you don't need a fancy 500 dollar one. Just dont drive reckless and youll be fine
 
My parents have one for our long drives to the mountains. Every weekend for 3 or 4 years we'd do 3.5 hours of driving each way and not a single speeding ticket.

Valentine 1 is no doubt the best, but SUPER expensive.

I had a Passport 8500 x50, which worked fine.

The New Passports, 9500, are pretty nuts. Built in GPS tells you shit like someone a mile ahead of you just got hit, you can mark locations of common speed traps, stuff like that.

The only issue is with Laser. Some have shifters or jammers or whatever you want to call them, but I've heard that's pretty reliable. As long as cops are using Radar instead of Laser around you, you should be fine.
 
I have the beltronics vector 955, it was the best in the sub-$200 class. Picked mine up for 140.

To all the haters, do you know how much a 9 mph over ticket costs in the state of NY? $185

If it saves you even once, it's already paid for itself.

I've had great success with mine, it can detect 1-2 miles ahead if the patrol has their radar on.

Of course, if you have the money, go for the valentine 1
 
i use a passport 9500, pretty amazing. Its a bit smarter than most radar detectors as you can mute it if you know the alert its giving is just a automatic door or such. Its pretty vocal aswell, it will say outloud "k band or X band" then start beeping.
