Racer Appreciation Thread

I know I am going to get tons of hate for this, but here goes. After seeing racers getting hated on in every possible way on this site i think people here do need to consider where our newschool movement would be without the existence of race. Many of the people who are revolutionizing park, pow, and big mountain have spent time in race, or moguls, and without the innovation these people have brought, we would probably not be even close to the level we are at right now. And people, look around you, I know that, at my mountain at least, most of the best skiers had spent years racing and are very thankful they did it.I know some racers can be dicks, but then again, have you seen the amount of hate here? I know this will change nothing, but I just wanted to throw this out there.Bring on the shitshow

most racers are WAYYYYY better skiers then "ns" kids, i would like to see the average NSer try to ski a pair of 211 DH skis going 80mph, its fucking hard

HATE HATE HATE, LAME YOU RACE!!!!

Just kidding I completely agree with you, racing along side all other styles of skiing has helped our sport evolve, I don't think I could get that into downhill racing now but I know it takes tons of skill( more than people think) and constantly learning new carving and edging tips. I actually kind of wish I would've been put into racing when I was younger because I know how much it can help your freestyle game to for balance and edging

Most 'average' racers don't ski DH either, not hating on them, but they flat out don't. I get sick of hearing about how people used to race, big deal, doesn't mean you were any good at it. And kids who ski park are just better at a different aspect, it's all skiing.

But yes, racing is sick, I have so much respect for Jon combining racing and big air, and I get stoked when I see dudes like Bode and Ted training, because they are just at another level.

i have never raced a day in my life but i can guarentee you i am a better skier than most racers i know. and its not racing that most people have a problem with, its the people that race. i have never met a racer who hasnt thought he was entitled to the whole fucking mountain and treats anyone who isnt wearing gay ass spandex like a fucking gaper.

you live on the east coast and dont have any real terrain to ski. its not your fault, but i hope you realize that you would be absolutely blown away by pretty much any kid out west who gets in 30+ days a year.

and there are just as many entitled douchbags who treat the mountain as if it is their own, who wear Saga, and other baggy park clothes.

thats not the point of his post, like the post above said lets see an nser do that. the real thing i hate about this site is that people dont know how to ski and only hit rails allday, no i am on the east cost so i know most mountains are ice rinks, but it doesnt hurt to know how to ski.

I dont come from a race background as such but I race skiercross a few times a year and I LOVE it. SOOOOO much fun. Freestyle skills def help in that event too.
The first time I got on my current Rossi GS skis (that I use for SX) it was pretty funny. You lean the knee over to put them into a turn going "come on...turn......turn...........turn........turn turn TURN TURN NOW FUCKER....OH SHIT" then you stop, turn around, face the other way and repeat. That was for my first run til I worked out that those sort of skis are not like twinnies....you can't just lean and turn. You have to take them by the scruff of the neck, beat them into submission then show them how much force you can put through them before they begin to respect you and agree to carve.
Sparknotes: Proper racing skis are hardcore (no pun intended)

i grew up racing and continue to race competitively through high school.

if it wasnt for racing i wouldnt be the skier i am now.

sammy c raced, steve stepp raced, there are literally hundreds more sponsered freestyle skiers who spent years racing.

I have alot of respect for what racers do. I raced for 5 years, 9-14, and am so happy i did, made me such a better technical skier, although, the main reason I quit was because of the other racers, and because my family did not have enough money to travel, pay race fees, and buy top of the line gear every year. I would have stuck with it if I didnt constantly get made fun of for my 3-4 year old used gear, even though I usually beat the kids with the best gear, but it just wasn't fun to have to compete in other aspects besides the skiing alone. Racing makes you a better skier, and unfortunately turns alot of kids into Racer Brats, some kids I knew I got along great with the first couple years, and hated them after a while, It is an attitude that needs to be fixed, then racing will become something every young skier aspires to do, because lets be honest, it improves your skiing ability an amazing amount.

ive always wanted to be a racer. shit looks fun!

I'm a previous racer.. Both sides are difficult. Racing is more competitive and at a higher level though. Freestyle prob takes more balls but don't think it's not scary making fast turns on ice.
